MASTIC ROOFING COMPANYr
RUSSELL’S PATENT.
rpilK Mastic Roof is, beyond a doubt, one of the
X greatest inventions of the age. In view of
its low cost, (half the price of tin,) easy applica
tion, gr<-*at durability aud exact adaptation to any
climate by its expansion and contraction through
the influence of heat and cold, it does unquestiona
bly, by far, excel any roofing now in use, slate not
excepted. It can be readily applied to roofs ol
overy description, either steep or flat, and is
known to be bettor tban anything ever before dis
covered lor Steamboat Decks, Bridges, Rail Road
Cars, Founderles, Ac.
It may bo put over old Shingles without re
moving them, and is far better than any Oil Paints
for metal roofs. New buildings require to be cov
ered only with rough pine plank previous to the
application of this article, and in canes of emer
gency, a roof measuring twenty or even forty
squares, may be covered in a single day.
Roofing done in any section of the South, and
rights sold for using the same. All work will bo
warranted tight or uo pay asked. Old Tin, Iron,
Slate or Shingle Roofs made tight and warranted.
We propose to roof, free of charge, one Car for
each Rail Road Company in the South, after that
S2O and $25 will he charged.

Death of an Army Officer.
Major John Sanders, United States
Engineer, died at Fort Delawure on thu
29th of July. Major Sanders was a na
tivo of Kentucky, a grandson of the cel
ebrated George Nicholas of that State,
son-in-law of Judge Wilkins, of Pennsyl
vania, who was Secretary of War under
Mr. Tyler, and a brother of George N.
Sanders, of New York. lie graduated
with honor at West Point, and wa* Chief
Engincor under Genorul Worth, planned
the attack of the Texas Rangers upon
the Bishop’s Palaco at Monterey; he
also distinguished himself at the siege
of Vera Cruz. lie was engaged at the
time of his death in constructing Fort
Delaware, which is intended to command
the entrance to the Delaware.
Dong Ulcrftted Punishment*
The Eutaw Whig has been informed by
a gentleman recently from Arkansas, that
John Bass, who was notorious in that
part of Alabama some five years ago, was
hanged in that State about three months
ago for murdering and robbing a tax
collector. While ou tho gallows he con
fessed that after he left Alabama he
murdered three men for their money,
besides the one for committing which h*
was executed. Bass murdered a negro
in Tuscaloosa sonio years since, but e
enped punishment by changing the venu*
to Pickens, where he whipped another
one to death, und, to escape punishment,
fled to Arkansas, wliero he met the fate
he had so long justly merited.
Mexican Impudence.
The biario de Avisos, a paper published
in tho city of Mexico, has an article on
the subject of American claims, from
which the following extract is translated
nnd furnished by tho correspondent of
the N. 0. Picayune :
These peoplo have turned crazy. De
cidedly tlieso Yankees will soon be mas
ters of the bombastic swagger of tb*
gascovs. When tho question of Yankee
indemnification is debatod, it will also be
time to debate what is due to the Mexi
cans ruined in California, and the balance
in our favor will bo endorsed over to our
English creditors, towards whom Yankee
arrogance is far below zero—so much so
that British cruisers have treated Yankee
vessels with utter contempt, searching
and compelling them to pass under-he
iron rod of their superiority und disdain.
That miserable nation is in such a
quandary that it has despatched its whole
navy to meet three or four cruisers sail
ing iu the Gulf. They look for a Trafal
gar; they shall have one, nnd we will ap
plaud with upraised hands the humiliation
of that people by the British, as we have
already applauded their impotent attacks
on Cuba aud Nicaragua.
If they are under tho impression that
they can settle their accounts with our
actual government by threatening to
compel uc to pay what we may owo them,
without first paying what is due us, they
may never hnve niude a more egregioue
mistake. Yankee claims will either be
paid or not, but those of Mexicans ruined
iu California by tho rabble will be de
manded at its proper time.
A Blaclx Republican Confceelon.
Tho New York Courier and Enquirer,
tho most respectable of ull the organa of
the Black Republican party, says :
So far as regards the material interests
of Jamaica, the fact is unquestionable
that since the emancipation prosperity
has been followed by adversity. Thie
leading fact is settled beyond all disputa
by figures which cannot lie. It is on re
cord that 231 sugar estates have been
abandoned, besides 233 coti'ee plantations
and 132 grass-pens. The pnper circula
tion which amounted to £258,816 in 1864
had dwindled to £70,000 in 1855. Tb*
average export of sugar to the United
Kingdom from Jamaica from 1831 to
1834, before the enactment of the eman
cipation b’U, was 67,176 tons; from 1836
to 1838, nfter tho passage of that mea
sure and the adoption of the apprentice
system, the average exports were 62,000
tons; from 1839 to 1842, tho three year*
after the entire emancipation took effect,
tho average export amounted to 32,366
tons The amount has not since increas
ed, and the great bulk of the sugar now
imported into England is grown on the
slavo islands of Cuba and l’orto Rico.—
The other great staples havo experienced
a similar reduction.
A Novel Case.
There was a novol application of the
famous Drod Scott decision in the Court
of Common Pleas of New York recently.
About five years ago Eleclra M. Coon
obtained a divorce from bed and board
from her husband, John M. Coon. (The
parties are both colored folks.) JohnDy
then left for California, nnd while absent
an order was entered that during th*
pending of the action he should pay on*
hundred and forty dollars alimony, and
one hundred dollars counsel fees. Jobu
recently arrived from the land of gold,
but refused to obey tho order. An ap.
plication was thereupon made for an at
tachment agniust him for a contempt of
court. Tho order to show cause why
such writ should not be issued was re
turnable this morning, when John,
through his counsel, James McClay, con
tended that bo could not be punished,
and quoted as his authority the famoua
passage in the Drud Scott decision, which
said that the negro was so fur inferior to
tho while man that he bad no right which
the white man was bound to respect;
that he was a mere chattel, and could bo
sold as merchandise. Under these cir
cumstances the defendant claimed that
be could not be punished, as the plaintiff
had no legal rights His Honor reserved
his decision, but ordered that interroga
tories should be filled to see whether the
defendant had really boen guilty of any
contempt or not.
The British bark Penelope, of New
port (Englnnd,) from Matanzas for Queens
town (Ireland,) with a cargo of molasaea,
reached our Quarantine on Sunday last.
The officers and crew of this vessel hav*
suffered severely from yellow fever, ihr
having lost her captain, Howell, and four
men while in Mntanzas. She was then
put under commaud of the mate, Wil
liams, who, with one seaman, died at sea,
and she has put in here with two men
sick. * Her preseat captain, Sear*, wa
procured nt sea from a vessel called th*
Rolla, bound to Savannah. —Charluton
