The members of the Presbyterian Church will meet at the Church on SATURDAY MORNING, 7th inst., at 10 o'clock, for the purpose of selecting a location for the new Church. By order of the Committee. August 6-2 t Neav Advertisements, AVe would invite tho attention of our planting friends to the advertisement of Messrs. Hughes, Daniel &Cos., in another column, by which it will be seen Mr. John It. Eastham has withdrawn from the Fon taine & Lowell Ware-Houses. See auction sale of Groceries on Tues day next, by Messrs. Harrison & Pitts. Protect your bouses from lightning.— See advertisement of Messrs. D. 15. Ladd & Bro. See advertisement of Columbus Ex change to rent, by D. D. ltidenhour, or John Ligou. Funeral Procession. The City Light Guards, Capt. Colquitt, turned out yesterday afternoon, to pay the last tribute of respect to their late companion iu arms, private Daniel M. Pitts, who died in this city the day pre vious. The Light Guards have lost a worthy companion, and the community a worthy citizen. May the sod rest lightly on his manly breast. Fire. Yesterday, about 1 o’clock, p. m., the alarm of fire was sounded, occasioned by the burning of the smoke house on the premises of Mr. J. C. ltuse, on Jackson street, at present occupied by Dr. A. I. llobison. The Fire Companies were promptly on the spot, and prevented-the fire from spreading beyond the building in which it originated. AVc learn the building caught from a fire kindled for the purpose of smoking some meat. The loss is inconsiderable. Raiu. We were blessed yesterday afternoon with a refreshing shower, which was be ginning to be much needed, as well on account of the heated state of the atmos phere as the thirsty condition of tbc crops. While it has not been what might be considered a good season, we are thankful for so much, larger favors in proportion. We do not learn, how ever, that the crops have suffered mate rially so far, and most of farmers with whom we have conversed say that with no unforeseen accident and a late frost, they will make more cotton than they can gather, while they have scores ot corn already placed beyond all contin gencies. Distinguished Arrival. Miss Emily J. Blount, the inamorata ol the “gallant Zuoave,” and the lioness of the gossiping world for sometime past, in Gotham in particular, and all the bal ance of the American continent in gene ral, arrived in our city, under the care of Mr. Levy, one of her father’s attorney, on the afternoontrainof carson theMuscogee Rail Road, yesterday, cn route for Mont gomery, where she will remain with some relatives, until the suit instituted agaiust her “galliant lovyer,” by her “cruel pa rient’’ shall be terminated, and her father and mother can rejoin her. The father and mother remained over at Savannah until the case could be tried. In another column we give from the Savannah Re publican, an account of the reception of the gallant imposter at that city. Hearing that Miss lllount was a pas senger on the cars, we called at the Perry House, where we obtained a fair view of her person, and as all the world is on the qui vice as to anything appertaining to this romantic affair, a short description of her person may not be uninteresting, at i jast to the fairer portion of our read ers. Her face is not what might bo called pretty, being somewhat freckled, with oue or two moles upon it, which detracts from her appearance. She nevertheless has rather an attractive appearance, and would always invito a seoond glance wherever seen. She has a rather jaded look now, and her countenance bears .inmistakeable evidence of much mental excitement and suffering. She is appar ently about twenty years of ago, medium stature, rather sallow complexion, with full and large blue eyes, sparkling with intelligence, and expressive of a great deal of self will and determination. As she p ised from the parlor to tho omni bus she lea„e ‘ upon the arm of Mr. Levy, and did notyipiiear much abashed at the many curious tyes that were bent upon her. She was dressed in a plain travel ing dress, (don’t recollect what color,) bonnet ala mode, and hoops. Further as to dress, this deponent saitb not. She created as much excitement as if she had been a literal lioness, instead of a figura tive one, and went on her way rejoicing. The father aud mother, we suppose, will be along in a day or two, but if the “gal lant Zouave” does not give this city the go by, he may find himself minus a pair of ears, or plus a coat of tar and feathers. For the Daily Sun. Messrs. Editors— Tho following was posted up in several places about town yesterday. I sincerely trust there will be a good turn out should the Zouave ar rive, Will someone in Savannah telt> grr.ph the boys when he leaves, so that they have their articles of war (tar and feathers) prepared for him. Says the card— “ All in favor of giving the “gallant Zouave” a Buncombe reception, and a ride on a “ten foot” rail, will meet at the Muscogee Depot at 3>* p. m. 1 understand the “gallant” did not ar rive. JUSTICE. For the Daily Sun. Eds. Sun: In your paper issued the 3d instant, nppeurs au article calling the at tention of the city authorities to tho manner adopted by the Guard of killing dogs, in which wo are charged with hav ing a dog of our own which we use for the purpuso of enticing others from the lots of their owners, that we may have an opportunity to get them in the streets aud there slay them, lu justice to our selves, wo feel compelled, through the same medium, to give the lie to the arti cle of “Citizen” in full. We have only discharged what we considered to be our j duty uuder the instruction received from j our superiors. If such had been the j fact, as “Citizeu” charges iu his article, | would it uot havo been better for him to have reported tho fact to the Mayor, with the name of the policeman who was guilty ? For wo feel assured had any such case been reported and substantiated by proof, that the guard so offending would have met with a prompt discharge. GEO. A. HUGKABY, J. W. SHOUPE, HENRY UILEY, ZACHARIAII GAMMEL. Policemen. An Invaluable Remedy. When Dr. Urugg first commenced experimenting in tire pro duction of this invaluable remedy, now so gener ally known as tho “Arctic Liniment,” ho little dreamed of the brilliant success destined to crown his labor, llis only idea was to produce a lini ment for the benefit of the Arctic explorers under Dr. Kano, intended exclusively fur their use, and adapted to the cure of all those disease* incident to their adventurous life. Such, however, wore found to be tho merits of the preparation, that Dr. ltragg felt it his duty to try its virtues in othor latitudes. The result has been most happy. Long continued cases of Rheumatism, which had been given up by numerous physicians, yielded at once to its curative properties. The most agonizing cases of Neuralgia, Paralysis and Gout were re lieved iu an incredibly brief period of time; and in short, in all diseases whore liniments are proper to be used, Bragg's Arctic Liniment has proved itself invincible. For sale in Columbus, Georgia, by DAN FORTH, NAGEL & CO. An agent is wanted in every town and village. Applications should be made to Bragg& Burrowes, St. Louis, Missouri, aud must always he accompa nied by good reference. July 7-lrn GOLD AND SILVER FOR SALE By S. H. HILL. MONEY WANTED. Columbus, Ga., July 17, 1858-ts Important to Housekeepers! R. D. GRANGER’S IMPROVED IRON WITCH. Patented December 1 9 1857. fFIIE Patentee, iu presenting this new jb X Stove to tho public, deems it proper to make a few remarks in regard to itsn’ ~ The old, well known IRON COOKING STOVE has been in the market about TEN YEARS, aud has given very goneral satisfac tion ; but since tho introduction of that Stove, observation aud experience has enabled me to make such improvements in my new IRON WITCH as makes it a much better and more de sirable Stove. The oven bottom of the improved IRON WITCH is better protected, and the heat in the oven more perfectly equalized by a flue passing from back to front under the oven bottom. The air flue at the back of tho oven bottom con ducts a largo body of air along the bottom, aud up between the front oven plate and fire-back, pro tecting the latter and equalizing the heat. This air, having become highly heated, passes through tho oven, facilitates the baking, aud carries off all smell and impurities. Meat baked in this oven will be found entirely free from tho dead baked taste usual to meats done iu the common air-tight ovens. Asa bread baker, this oven will give great satisfaction, and enable the cook to turn out a lighter, more nutritious and palatable bread. The flue at the back of tho oven is divided so as to give much more heat towards the sides; by this means equalizing the heat, aud making it more intense at this poiut, at the same time preventing it from oscaping into the stove pipe before thor oughly heating the back aud sides of the Stove. With the above improvements, the Patentee has also exercised all the experience of thirty years in the stove business, in making this Stove STRONG and DURABLE. The plates are so constructed and equalized that tho expansion and contraction of the iron will not crack thorn, and all tho parts are strengthened that come in immediate contact with the tire. In fact, no labor nor expense has been spared in ma king the Improved Iron Witch tho very best wood Cooking Stove in the market, and one that lia* no equal.
