Price —fifty cents per month. Wo are indebted to Mr. Charles Marsh, of Hamden’s Express, for late Memphis papers, in advance of the mail. . Storm. On Sunday night our city was visited by one of the heaviest rains we havo had for months, accompanied by wind, hail, and the most terrific lightniug und thunder. No material damage was done in the city, that we have learned, further than the blowing down of a few shade trees, limbs, &c. From persons from the country, we learn that the storm was more violent in town than anywhere else. Yesterday evening was dark, gloomy and threatening, but up to the time we went to press there had been but little rain. The thunder and lightning was quite heavy, and the wind blew almost a gale, but the heaviest part of the storm passed around the city. Stabbing Affray. We learn that an affray took place either on or near the new bridge on Sat urday night last, between a man by the name of John Allen, of this city and a man by the name of McArthur, of Gi rard, in which the latter was seriously cut in several places, but, we learn, not fatally. We did not learn the origin of the difficulty. A Most Brutal Murder, On Sunday last, as the evening train was coming in from Macon, on the Mus cogee Rail Road, about three miles from town, the engineer saw lying on the track, a short distance ahead, a woman, and as she did not move when he sounded the whistle, lie stopped the engine before reaching ber, and on going to where she was lying, it was found that she had been most brutally murdered and placed upon the track, in order, it is supposed, for the car to run over her, and create the ira pression that she had been killed by it. Information was conveyed to Coroner Wright, who repaired to the spot, and had the body conveyed to town for the purpose of holding an inquest. It was identified as that of Mrs. Ivey, wife of Giles Ivey, living near the line of the city limits, on the road leading to Wynn ton. They were married, we learn, but a short time since, though it is stated they had been living on terms of intimacy for some time previous. . Her name be fore marriage was Mrs. Curry. An ex amination of the body showed seven wounds, any one of which would have proved fatal. The verdict of the jury was that the deceased “came to her death from wounds inflicted with a sharp in strument in the hands of some person or persons unknown to the jury.” Suspicion rests upon Giles Ivey, the re puted husband of the deceased, as her children state that the two started off in the direction of where the murder was committed in the morning, under the pre tence of going to church, aud as he was seen after the supposed time of the mur der much excited, and with blood upon his clothes, and also attempted to kill his daughter, there appears to be little doubt that he committed the bloody deed. There are a thousand and one rumors about the affair which we will not mention, as they will serve no good end, and will only feed a depraved taste, to relate them. Ivey, we learn, has left for parts un known, and we know not wliat efforts are making to apprehend him. Death from Hydrophobia, A young man, named Francis Julien, living on Government street, near La fayette, died last night about 8 o’clock, having all the symptoms of hydrophobia About ten days ago a small dog having “fils,” Julien undeitook to administer to it a remedy. It is supposed the dog was mad, and in some way conveyed the virus to Julien, though no bile was discernible. At all events on Tuesday evening last Julien went borne complaining of pain in. his throat and head; bis mother got a tub of hot water for the purpose of bath ing his feet; on the tub of water being brought into the room be started wildly and gagged at the water with the utmost horror, frothing, at the mouth the while. Water was offered him in various ways during Wednesday, but wa3 always re jected, and every time producing convul sive action. Last night he expiied, after a spasm “so horrible,” says an eye wit ness, “that no adequate description of it can be given.”. The authorities have been notified, and we doubt not all the facts in this extraor dinary case will be presented in an offi cial manner to-morrow morning. Young Julien was about 20 years of age. Since the above was written, we learned officially that Dr. Nott pronounced the death of Julien to be from hydrophobia. Also, that the city ordinance bearing on this oaso will now bo rigidly enforced by order of the Mayor. —Mobile News, blh instant. The Great English Remedy. January 16, 1868.12 m From tho Augusta Dispatch. Kerosene Oil, We have received the following com munication from tho manufacturers of Kerosene Oil, in reference to the late ac cident at Mr. Munger’s and to the non explosive properties of the oil they man ufacture : New York, May 25th, 1858. To the Editor of the Augusta Even ing Dispatch — Dear Sir: Oar attention has been called to an article t hat appeared in your issue of the 10th inst., describing an accident that occurred at tho residence of Mr. Munger, of your city, from the explosion of a Coal Oil barrel, whereby a negro woman was killed, and in which you have inadvertently done an injury to the Kerosene Oil Company, of which we are agents, by stating “that the barrel contained Coal Oil, commonly known as Kerosene Oil, &c. Now, it has been ascertained, that the barrel referred to, never contained Kero sene Oil, but some preparation purchased by Mr. Munger from a party doing busi ness in Greenwich street, New York, and who calls his article ‘• Cannel Coal Oil.” — No accident has over occurred from the many thousands of barrels of Kerosene Oil distributed all over the United States. Unprincipled dealers in this city are very apt lo apply term “ Kerosene ” to any compound resembling tho products from coal, and the public are thereby deceived, and, very often, endangered by the use of explosive mixtures. “ Kerosene ” is the trade mark of the Kerosene Oil Company, and its exclusive property, aud all parties making use of that word to facilitate the sale of explo sive compounds, or oils, not manufactured by tho Kerosene Oil Company, will be prosecuted for their illegal use of the same. You will please give this letter an in sertion in your journal, so that the false impression, created in your article, may be counteracted. We assure you, most emphatically, that Kerosene, as manufactured by our Com pany, is not explosive. Yours, truly, Austens’. Agents of Kerosene Oil Company. For the Daily Sun. Oil Advertising. The tradesman will do well to advertise his business frequently. I could mention several reasons why it should be done; but. I leave the reader to suggest the rea sons for himself. If he has never tried it, I will now advise him to try it. LACON. GOLD AND SILVER FOK SALE By S. 11. HILL. MONEY WANTED. Columbus, Ga., Jul 7 17,1858-ts Important to Housekeepers! R. D. GRANGER’S IMPROVED IRON WITCH. Patented December 1, 1857. lIHE Patentee, in presenting this new . Stove to the public, deems it proper to make a few remarks in regard to itsßjp VY Tho old, well known IRON WITCH COOKING STOVE has beon in the market about TEN YEARS, and has given very general satisfac tion ; but sinco the introduction of that Stove, observation aud experience has enabled me to make such improvements in my new IRON WITCH as makes it a much better and more de sirable Stove. The oven bottom of tho improved IRON WITCH is better protected, and the heat in tho oven more perfectly equalized by a flue passing from back to front under the oven bottom. The air lluo at the back of tho oven bottom con ducts a large body of air along the bottom, aud up between tho front oven plate aud fire-back, pro tecting the latter an(Lequalizing the heat. This air, having become highly heated, passes through the oven, facilitates the baking, and carries off all smell aud impurities. Meat baked in this oven will be found entirely freo from the dead baked taste usual to meats done in the common air-tight ovens. Asa bread baker, this oven will give great satisfaction, aud enable the cook to turn out a lighter, more nutritious and palatable bread. The flue at the back of the oven is divided so as to give much more heat towards the sides ; by this means equalizing the heat, and making it more intense at this point, at tho same time preventing it from escaping into the stove pipe before thor oughly heatiug the back and sides of the Stove. With tho above improvements, the Patentee has also exercised all tho experience of thirty years in the stove business, in making this Stove STRONG aud DURABLE. The plates are so constructed and equalized that the expansion and contraction of tho iron will not crack them, and all the parts are strengthened that come in immediate contact with the fire. In fact, no labor nor expense has been spared in ma king the Improved Iron Witch the very best wood Cooking Stove in the market, and one that has no equal.
