DAILY BJJN. Monday Morning, Sept. G, 185S. Interest In the Sun Office tor Sale. Using deslroue of withdrawing a portion of my capital from the printing business, I offer ono third interest in the San newspaper printing es tablishment and bindery for sale. The business , is paying handsome dividends on the capital. A bargain can be had by a cash purchaser. A business partner would bo preferred. Aug. 25, 1858. THOMAS Du WOLF. Sun for the Springe. Persons going to the watering places or other summer resorts, can bare the Daily Sun mailed to them for any length of time, by leaving their orders at the Sun office, and paying In advance for the time named. Price—fifty cents per mouth. Return It. If'auy honest, well disposed gentleman, who is inclined to do the “clean thing,” bus found a diamond breast pin, he can ascertain to whom it belongs by reference to our advertising columns. Dr. Win. G. Hay, Assistant Surgeon of the Steamship Niagara, and on hoard of her during her excursion in laying the Telegraphic Cable, is now on a visit to his relatives in this city. Rain. The hearts of our people were made glad on Saturday evening by a refresh ing rain and tho prospect of more before the weather cleared up. The dust for several days previous was almost intol erable, and the turnip crop, late gardens and potatoes were beginning to suffer for the want of rain. The prospect at this present writing (Saturday evening) is that we will hove plenty of rain for all practical purposes, during the present spell. For tho Daily Sun. Eds. Sun: Will you permit me to call attention, through your columns, to the frequent offences against deconcy, as well as violation of the city ordinance, which may be witnessed, and must be, by all who walk anywhere near the New Bridge in the cool of the evening ? At such times it is quite provoking that gentlemen and ladies must cut short their walks for fear of coming suddenly upon men and boys bathing in the river. I hope this notice of the nuisance will be sufficient to effect its abatement by our obliging and efficient Marshal. Yours, respectfully, SUBSCRIBER. The Weather and the Crops. For some time past the weather in this region has been quite dry, and a part of the time remarkably cool for this season of the year. The crops of corn are gen erally veay abundant. The cotton crops are suffering some on account of rust, but this crop is much forwarder than it has been for some years past, and the stalk is quite full of early fruit already matured and opening, therefore the rust is not likely to prove so disastrous as if it had made its appearance at an earlier day. W'e are inclined to the opinion that the cotton crop in middlo Georgia will be an average one. W'e learn that in the lower part of this State, as also of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, the boll worm has made great havoc, and that the crops in that section will be less than an average ono.—Atlan ta Intelligencer, 4th inst. A mass meeting of the slaveholders of Worcester county, Maryland, will be held at Snow Hill on the 14th inst. The call for the meeting says : “Tho continued encroachments of abo lition emissaries upon our slave property demands stern action at our hands. Year after year, and every year to a more alarming extent, have these abolitionists been preying upon our rights and prop erty. Worcester county lose3 not less than an average of $15,000 annual'y by runaway slaves—caused by those merce nary wretches sent out under every guise.” Gas Works for Rome. W'e have just seen a petition from Jas. Gardner, jr., of Augusta, and others, to our Qity'Council, asking certain rights and privileges for the purpose of estab lishing Gas Works in our city. The pe titioners are not unreasonable in their quirements, and it is probable their peti tion will be granted. If tho enterprise is engaged in, the city and citizens cai. take stock in the Company if they choose. Gas Works would greatly enhance the interest of Rome, and wo have no doubt but that all of our citizens will manifest a lively interest in the enterprise.— Rome Courier, Ist inst. January 15, 1858 12m The Yellow Fever 111 New Orleans— i How Its Victims are Burled. The Delta has the following sickening picture of the manner in which they bury the dead in one of the cemeteries of Now Orleans: “St. Vincent do Paul Cemetery has been the burial place of a large number I of the viotims of yellow fever this season, from the fact that the disease has been 1 j prevailing in a greater degree in the j third district than any other portion of i the city. The cemetery is divided into two divisions; the lower is almost desti tute of vaults or tombs, aud those in- ! terred are placed, in dry weather, about a foot under ground, tho dirt tLrown on top not more than covering the coffin, i Since the recent heavy rains the whole place is Hooded more or less, aud looks more like a swamp than a cemetery. The spade hardly breaks through the sod betore the water shows itself, and then the negroes gouge out as much as they cau for the water. “Several graves were open yesterday, as we passed through, looking like oblong mud-puddles. A few moments afterward the remains of some poor individual was brought in, and left to the negroes to inter. Placing tho rough coffin on a hard car, they carried it a short distance ! and placed it by the side of a hole, and I theu made preparation for placing it in \ its last resting place.” The head of the | coffin was let down into the water, but, j of course, it would not sink, and inune- j diately rose to the surface. It was thrust down several times rather roughly, to endeavor to make it adhere to the soft mud, but it invariably rose again. At last it was shoved in, and tho Bpade of one negro held it until tho other threw in large quantities of hard mud, which served as a weight to keep the head down. One of the negroes then, while the other kept his spade on the first end, lowered the foot and sank it in the same manner, kicking in some mud with his feet, while his spade kept the coffin down. The whole of this section of the cemetery is filled with new graves, and presents the appearance of a newly plowed field. The stench in some por tions is hardly endurable, coming, as it does, from the shallow graves of water.” Tlieft. Matthew Henry and John Bottom came passengers by tho Central Road Road on Wednesday last, the former on his way to New York. They put up at the City Hotel intending to remain until Henry took passage on one of the steamers. On rising yesterday morning, Henry found that his room had been entered and rob bed of one twenty and ono ten dollar gold piece. Information was immediate ly communicated to county officers Gal loway and Jones, who succeeded in ar resting Bottom, on whose person was found the twenty dollar gold piece, ac knowledged by him to have been stolen from Henry. The ten dollar gold piece was recovered through Mr. G. M. Griffin, from whom Bottom had purchased some articles of jewelry. Justice Connell hav ing issued a warrant for his arrest, he was lodged in jail. Messrs. Jones and Galloway deserve credit for the active part they took in sifting this affair to the bottom.— Sav. Rep., 3d inst. Springs Life. The editor of tho Fredericksburg News, writing one of his lively letters from the Greenbrier White Sulphur, draws it (rather strong, we fear,) as follows: “Here we are, a community of seventeen hundred, nobody working, all well dressed, with nothing to do but to enjoy them selves—all rich apparently, and by repu tation ! Would you believe that a man came here to find a poor girl for a wife and couldn’t find ouc? They aro all wealthy aristocrats. One lady was here for two weeks, who wore three different dresses every day, and left because her other trunk had not arrived and sho would have to wear a dress a second time. To see five thousand dollars worth of diamonds, lace, &c., on one lady at a ball, is not considered remarkable.” GOLD AND SILVER FOR, SALE By S. 11. HTLL. MONEY WANTED.
