The business Is paying handsome dividends on tho capital. A bargain can bo had by a cash purchaser. A business partner would be preferred. Aug. 25,1858. THOMAS DnW’OLF. The Plank Road. We notice with pleasure, hands at work, repairing the plank road leading from the Warehouses to the Muscogee llail Road Depot. This is a matter which was very much needed, and we are very glad that it has been commenced. Tho work is under the direction of Mr. Rowers, the gentlemanly agent of the Marino Bank of Savannah, in our city. Just the Thing. We were shown yesterday a sewing ma chine just received by Messrs. Hunt, Waro & Cos., which has an attachment for hemming. The specimen of the work wo saw was as neatly and accurately done as if it had been doue by hand.— The raw edge of the cloth is nicely turn ed dowu and stitched all at tho same time. We advise our lady friends to call and see the improvement. Death of Judge Wale*. It is with unfeigned regret that we have to record the death of another well known and highly esteemed citizen of Columbus, lion. S. A. Wales, formerly of North Car olina, breathed his last yesterday after noon, his disease, we learn, being typhoid fever. lie formerly represented this county in the Senatorial branch of our Stato Legislature, and at the time of his death was one of the Justices of the In ferior Court of this county. He dis charged the duties of these several posi tions with credit to himself and profit to his constituency, while in the social walks of life his virtues, and gentlemanly bear ing towards all, won for him tho friend ship of all who enjoyed his personal ac quaintance. May He who “tempers the wind to the shorn lamb” speak consola tion to the hearts of the love l ones he has left behiud to mourn his loss. The Comet. This strange and incomprehensible visitor, unfolds a most beautiful, as well as wondrous tail, every evening in the Northwestern heavens, giving everybody a chanoe to soe it without putting them selves to the trouble of rising at au un usually early hour of a morning. It is nightly growing brighter, and sometime next week it is said it will reach its perihelion, when it will present its bright est appearance, after which it will begin to recede, and will soon disappear, never more to be seen by those who now live upon the earth. So those who wish to tako a good view of it should improve the present opportunity, as they will never have another. Great Cure* !—Citizens, read the following: RHEUMATISM.— Mr. Joseph D. Mumerous cases of Dyspepsy, of the most aggravated character, which were abandoned as incurable by some of the Medical Faculty, have, by the use of this Elixir, been re stored to porfect health, as attested certificates testify. _ April 10-ly Merchants’ Kail Road Shipping Receipts, neatly printed and bound, for sale at the SUN OFFICE. Blanks. Alabama Deeds and Justices’ Blanks, for sale at the Sun Office, Columbus, Os. Removal of the Quarantine Grounds. I A dispatch dated Albany, Sept. 24th, , ( says: Hon. George Hall of Brooklyn, Egbert Benson of New York, and Obadiah Brown of Staten Islaud, Commissioners for the removal of Quarantine, convened hero to-day for the purpose of presenting a plan for the removal of quarantine, to Gov. King, tho Lieut. Governor aud tho Comptroller, who have supervision over the selection of a site. They give up all idea of locating tho Quarantine on tho island, and propose to I construct a series of basins in the lower bay in which Heating hospitals can lio at anchor as still as in tho Liverpool docks. Each vessel used as a hospital is to bo j in a separate basin, so as to keep apart j the different diseases. The plan is en dorsed by the leading medical men of I New York, and is beliovod to bo practical and economical. The basins, they allege, can be con structed very speedily, and be completed, they believe, with the fund now on hand to their credit in the comptroller’s de partment. They aro prepared with estimates of the cost from engineers of the highest re- j sponsibility. It is also proposed by the Commissioners to go back to first princi ples, and make quarantine simply a sani tary institution, separating from it all stevedoring, lightering and other specu lative business, by which the expenses : and profits of quarantine have been swelled to such vast proportions, and leaving all such occupations to private enterprise and competition, subject to proper legal restriction. Aerial Navigation. The scheme of crossing the ocean with a balloon has been proposed by Messrs. Wise and Steiner, and each has offered to build an air ship of iho requisite size, and make the trip, but has failed in get ting a subscription of twenty thousand dollars for the purpose. Mr. La Moun tain says he will remain in this city du ring the present winter, and build a bal loon sixty-five feet in diameter, with an extensive power of five tons, with which he will cross the ocean, starting from this city in May next, and laud within I twenty-five miles of any given point in I Europe. lie has discovered a principle which will enable him to retain the gas in his balloon for any length of time, and he is confident that the air can be naviga ted as well as water, and with as little difficulty.— Troy (N. ¥.) Times. Louisiana Tobacco. The Baton Rouge Gazette of Thursday, 2-3d inst., 6ays : Mr. Umberhagan, who resides in the northern part, of our parish, will produce this season over two thousand pounds of tobacco. The quality of the leaf is very superior, and when manufactured into cigurs has as fine a flavor as the Havana article. Indeed, for several years past they have been sold through the country as Havanas. It requires but little labor to produce tobacco in our parish ; the only drawback is the worm, which almost invariably makes its appearance as the tender leaves put forth. Mr. Umberhagan tells us that turkeys can be trained to destroy this vermin; that a small flock will go through a patch of tobacco and pluck them off the brandi es as fast as they appear; the force of their bill kills them. The Sugar Crop. The New Orleans Crescent, of the 21 st inst., says: There were three lihds. of this season’s growth of sugar received from tho Tallyho plantation (J. D. Murrill’s place) and twenty half bbls. molasses, consigned to C. Tate & Cos. The sugar was sold at 9 cents, and the molasses at 38 cents. The first sugar last season was received from this plantation. The talk is that if noth ing untoward occurs, wo shall make 350,- 000 hhds. sugar this season, with a cor responding quantity of molasses. Female Seminary.
