IMPROVED IRON WITCH.
Patented December 1, 1857.
ffMIE Patentee,in presenting this new
I Stove to the public, deems it propel Eai. ’;K.
to make a few remarks in regard to its®’ ■ {
The old, well known IRON WITCH
COOKING STOVE has been iu the market about
TEN YEARS, and has given very general satisfac
tion; hut since the introduction of that Stove,
observation and experience has enabled me to
make such improvements in my new IRON
WITCH as makes it a much better and more de
sirable Stove.
The oven bottom of the improved IRON WITCH
is better protected, and the heat in tho oven more
perfectly equalized by a flue passing from back to
front under tho oven bottom.
The air lluo at tho back of the oven bottom con
ducts a largo body of air along tho bottom, and up
between the front oven plate and fire-back, pro
tecting the latter and equalizing the heat. This
air, having become highly heated, passes through
tho oven, facilitates the baking, and carries off all
smell and impurities. Meat baked in this oven
wiil bo found entirely free from tho dead baked
taste usual to meats done in tho common air-tight
ovens. Asa bread baker, this oven will give great
satisfaction, and enable the cook to turn out a
lighter, more nutritious and palatable bread.
The flue at the back of tho oven is divided so as
to give much more heat towards the sides; by this
menus equalizing tho heat, and making it more
intense at this point, at tho same time preventing
it from escaping into tho stove-pipe before thor
oughly heating the back and sides of the Stove.
With tho above improvements, the Patenteo has
also exercised all the experience of thirty years in
the stove business, in making this Stove STRONG
and DURABLE.
The plates are so constructed and equalized that
the expansion and contraction of the iron will not
crack them, and all the parts are strengthened
that come in immediate contact with the fire. In
fact, no labor nor expense has been spared in ma
king the Improved Iron Witch the very best wood
Cooking Stove in the market, and ono that has
no equal.

From tho Charleston Courier, 13th inst.
Later from Mexico.
We arc indebted to purser Mahoney, of
the Isabel, and to our Havana exchanges,
for transmitting the following reports of
interesting and important details from
Mexico, as related by passengers in the
Solent, which arrived at Havana with
Vera Cruz dates of the 3d instant:
Tho British Bteamer Solent, Lewis, left
Vera Cruz on the 3d instant, at 12, m.—
At 7, a. m., in the morniDg, the Courier
Extraordinary arrived Horn tho City of
Mexico, with news that General Vidauri
had been defeated by Gen. Miraman, near
San Louis. Later news reports that he
had captured one thousand prisoners and
several pieces of artillery.
At 8, a. m., another courier arrived
from Vera Cruz, stating that Vidauri had
defeated Miraman, and that the latter had
blown his brains out in despair. The
latter is tho story of the Liberal party.—
There is no doubt but that a battle has
been fought between the abovo Generals,
and that Gen. G. Vidauri has met with
reverses.
The Solent has brought the news from
Tampico that Governor Garza, of the Lib
erol party, generrl commanding at Tam
pico, has levied a contribution on all for
eigners there, amounting to SIOO,OOO,
and failing to raise the same, had impris
oned a large number of Spaniards, and
American citizens. These were retained
in prison thirty eight hours, without any
thing to eat or drink, and were liberated
on promising to raise the amount, SIOO,-
000. A number fled to the English
steamer Solent, then in harbor, and the
Spanish Consul took refuge on board a
Spanish vessel-of-war, lying off Tampico.
His family took refuge on board the
English steamer Solent, and were landed
at Havana.
The whole affair is considered a great
outrage, and important dispatches are on
iho way from the Consul at Tampico for
Washington, as also important dispatches
from our Minister, Mr. Forsyth, at Mex
ico.
The rest of the belligerent forces re
main as per last news.
Lieut. Jones, of the sloop-of-war Ply
mouth, is the bearer of dispatches for
Washington.
The Plymouth sailed from Vera Cruz
on 28th September, for Tampico, but had
not arrived up to the departure of the
British steamship Solent. What steps
Capt. Dahlgreen, of the Plymouth, will
tako in tho affair, was not known. The
American Minister, Mr. Forsyth, and
family, will be at Vera Cruz on or about
the 18th inst., to sail in the Plymouth for
the United States.
Col. Taloott, W. E. Myers, A. B. Gray,
with a corps of engineers, came as pas
sengers in the British steamer Solent,
and embarked on board the steamer Isa
bel, cn the 10th inst., for Charleston.
On the way down from the City of
Mexico tho diligence was attacked by
robbers, when three of them were shot
dead by the above party. None of the
gentlemem were hurt. This is the first
defeat that the robbers have met with,
and it seems had a very beneficial effect,
as they did not make any attack on the
diligence for about one week. The ring
leader, at the Barauca de Para, wa
killed.
Pennsylvania Flections.
Washington, October 12 — 11 o’clock at
night.—The general complexion of the
returns of the Pennsylvania elections arc
unfavorable to tho administration.
In the Ninth Congressional district, T.
Stephens, opposition, gains considerable
(his democratic competitor is J. M. Hop
kins). Iu the 6th district, it is very pro
bable John lliokman, anti-Lecompton de
mocrat, is elected.
Philadelphia, Oct. 12—Midnight.—It
is believed here that the whole People’s
Ticket is elected. The adherents to that
party are now marching through tho city
and exhibiting great satisfaction at their
success.
{NO. 67.
Charleston Senatorial Contest.
Cuaiilkston, Oct. 13.—11. D. Lesesne,
Esq., has been elected State Senator from
this Senatorial district. His majority is
2t* votes over bis competitor, Mr. M. C.
Mordccai.
Mr. Mordecai was the former Senator
from Charleston district.
Yellow Fever In Mobile.
The Hoard of Health of Mobile reports
fifteen deaths from yellow fever for the
twenty-four hours ending at G o’clock on
Tuesday evening. The Register of the
111th, in speaking of tho health of tho
city, remarks :
The epidemio is plainly on the increase,
for not only were the deaths by yellow
fever fifteen, us given in by tho Sexton,
but they have taken place in all parts of
the city. In localities hitherto healthy,
and among classes deemed exempt, the
victims have been picked out by the de
stroyer.
In such a state of the case, we cannot
but again caution our absentees not to be
in a hurry to return home. It seems
senreely probable, at this time of writing,
thnt any show of frost will follow on the
heavy fall of rain on Sunday night and
Monday morning; for the temperature is
as mild now as at any time during the
last week.
Cable Stock.
Tho latest news from Valentia, brought
by tho City of Baltimore, is that the con
dition of cable affairs remains unchanged.
There had been an improved demand for
shares, and at London prices had ad
vanced to £3-18.
The Virginia Springs are all deserted.
Tho receipts this year were the largest
ever known. The receipts of the “Old
Sweet” were over $70,000.
