The New York Express learns from a private source that tho Australian cable has been worked through by Professor Hughes’ instruments at the average rate of 20 to 25 words por minute, while sub merged in tauksprepared for its reception. The cable between Malta and Corft, only twonty-fivo miles longer than the Austra lian cable, is only worked by the Morse system at the rates of four words per minute. Tho London Times refers to the state ment of Professor Hughes that he is confident of being able even now t* signal through the Atlantic cable, and anxious to conduct ull experiments upon tho wire at his own expense. The Time* condemns the perverse neglect of the company to nvail itself of the proposition of Professor Hughes, and hopes that in fairness and duly to tho shareholders, it will accept a liberal proposal, which, no matter how it results, can do them or their cablo no manner of injury, but, on tho other hand, may possibly be of im mense benefit.
