SJje ftailtj gun. A Hard Joke. A notorious practical joker yclept “Straight back Dick,” of Mobilo, perpe trated the following severe joko, upon an unsophisticated countryman, during the provalonoo of yellow fever in that oity, last Autumn: Dick was at the wharf one day last weok, when one of the up-river boats ar rived, looking, doubtless, for some un wary individual upon whom to exercise his talont. Ho watched closely the coun tenance of each passenger as ho stepped from the plank upon tho wharf, and at length fastened his gaze upon an individ ual who, from his appearance nnd man ners, was considerably noarer Mobilo than ho had ever been before. 110 was evidently ill at case, and had probably heard tho reports which wore rife in tho country, relativo to the hutfdrodß who were dying in Mobilo every hour from yellow fever. Tho man started off towards Dauphin street carpet-sack in hand ; but he had not proceeded far when a heavy hand was laid upon his shoulder, and he suddenly stopped. Upon turning round he met tho cold serious countenance of Dick, and it seemed to send a thrill of terror through his wholo frame. After looking at him steadily for about a min ute, Dick slowly ejaculated : ‘‘Yes.youare thciuan. Stand straight!” With fear visible in his countenance, tho poor man essayed to do as command ed. “Strnightor yet!” said Dick. “Thero, that will do,” and taking from bis pocket a small tape measure, ho stooped down and measured him from tho too us his huot to the crown of his hat, took a pencil and carefully noted the height in his pocket-book to the utter amazement of the stranger; and after which lie meas ured him across tho shoulders and nguin noted tho dimensions. He then looked at tho strangor firmly in tho faco and said ; “Sir, 1 am very sorry that it is so, but l really will not he able to finish it l'or you before morning.” “Finish what ?” usked tho stranger, endeavoring in vain to appear calm. “Why, your coffin, to be sure! You seo, I am the city undertaker, and the people are dying here so fast that 1 can hardly supply the demand for coffins.— You will have to wait until your turn comes, which will bo to-morrow morning —say nbout nine o’clock.” “But what tho and 1 do I want with n coffin ? I have no idea of dying !” “You haven’t, eh? iSir, you will not livo two hours and a half —I see it in your countenance. Why, oven now, you have a pain—a slight pain—in your back.” “Y-yes, Ibclievo I h-have,” replied the trembling lloosier. “Exactly,” said Dick, “and in your limbs, too 1” “Yes, stranger, you’re right; and I begin to fool it in the back of my neck and head.’’ “Os course you do, and unless you do something for it you’ll be dead in a short time, I assure you. Take my advice, now —go bnok aboard tho boat, swallow dowu a gill of brandy, get into your state room and covor up with blankets. Lay there until you perspire freely, then leave here like lightning!” lloosier hurried on board tho boat, and followed Dick’s instructions to the letter. On Monday, ho was met by a gentleman at Oitroncllo, to whom he related his wonderful osoapo from death by yellow fever, even after preparations wore being made to procure his coffin, lie says he will nover forgot tho kindness of the tall man in Mobile who gavo him such good advico. Sail luvcne of Fortune. The Philadelphia Press, in speaking of tho nrrest for forgery in that city of Geo. F. Peterman, says of him : When l’otcrman was questioned by Mr. Eneu as to the namo of the fnond who would go his security, the reply was a truthful one. “Recorder, a few years ago, when 1 had money aud was spending it freely, 1 was surrounded by friends, hut now, in my guilt and misfortuuo, I cannot seo ono of them!” When Peter man was removed from tho office he wept liko a child, and thero were few who saw him who did not feel truly sony for his condition. That he contemplated suioido was ovidont from tho fact that in his pock ets was found a large quantity of arsenio, which was removed by the officers. Tho Cashier of tho Kensington Bank had au interview with Peterman at tho conclusion of the hearing, and askod him whether his family had any support, 110 replied that his wife and nine children wero at the point of starvation, and that ho did not kuow how soon they would die. Tears wero in tho eyes of the cashier, us ho feelingly replied; “Mako your mind easy, Peterman, for they shall nover want whilo I have the means to provide for them.” A few years ago Peterman was tlio pos sessor of an ample fortune, nnd was look ed up to as a very model of uprightness and honesty, 110 was the proprietor of an extensivo manufactory in Second street, below Coates, and by dint of good management was realizing a handsome income; but whilo in tho midst of his prosperity ho was induced to visit ouo of the fashionable gambling saloons, and soon beentno so fascinated that he spent his entire fortune, and became so reduced tlmt ho was obliged to sell his stock for the payment of his debts, which roverso has now ended in a felon’s cell for forgery. fcANDKKTIIM’ Warranted Garden Seeds. As it is a well attested fact thut Dyspepsia is the origin of the suffering of a large portion of thoae who die of consumption, it become* tho duty of every one to use such precautions against and remedies for Dyspe|isiaas science and experience hare phaied before them, and which have proved to be efficacious ; of this character is Dr. William’s Auti-Dtspiptic Elixir, in corroboration of which road the following testimonials: Testimony of Mr. Michael Dunn, Superintend ent of the Philadelphia Exchange, corroborative of tho efficacy of William’s Anii-Dyspxitic Euxik : I’uiL vuxlphia, March IC, 1853. Dn. James Williams—Kor several years post I have been liable to attacks of Dyspepsia; but never have 1 been more distressingly alllleteU with its symptoms than within the last few weeks, indigestion, nervous irritability, despondency, a sense of weight in the stomach, anil severe pains in tho left side, rendered me, for the time being, truly wretched. Fortunately, I was recommended by a friend to try your Elixir. I did so, and in less than two weeks indigestion ceased; pain and nervous depression left me, and appetite, with mental and bodily health, were fully restored. To me tint cure Boemod almost miraculous, and my object in writing to you is—a hope tlmt other per sons suffering the miseries of Dyspepsia will avail themselves of your efficient remedy. I am, dear sir, yours truly, MICIIAEI, DUNN. AN INVALUABLE REMEDY 10R DYSPEPSIA. Hoad the testimony of tho wife of Mr. John Stiles, on the Kraukford Itoad, near the first toll gate : Fuankford Hoad, Oct. 25,1849. Dr. James Williams —Having recently under stood tlmt it is your intention to resume the pre paring of your Anti-Dyspeptic Elixir, and being anxious tlmt others may he benotitted by its use as I Imvo been, l horewith send you, for publica tion, if you think proper, a statement of tho effec tual cure produced on mo by it. Kora number of years I have been sulfering to such an extent, that I became so much debilita ted, and the digestive powers so much destroyed, tlmt it was with difficulty I could tako and retain sufficient nourishment to support life. Neither mysolf nor my friends were aware that my suffer ing proceeded from indigestion; in tho year 1839 my attention was directed by my husband to your advertisement, at tlmt time published in some of the city papers, explaining the causes nnd symp toms of dyspepsia, and confidently offering a remedy, i immediately procured and üßed your medicine with the most signal success; from a state of debility, languor nnd nervousness, and complete loss of the power of digestion, so great that I could take at first only five drops of tho Elixir at n doso, I was ill a few days much re lieved, and by continuing it a short time I have been restored to health, strength and vigor, which I still retain. I take great pleasure, sir, in mak ing known the efficacy of your Anti-Dyspeptic Elixir, and sincerely hope it may lie tho means of inducin'* others to go and he benefited like myself. Columbus, Jan. 29, ’6B-ly THE LIVER XIST^IGOPt-A-TOIR. PREPARED BY DR. SANFORD, Compounded entirely from Gums, IS one of the best Purgatives and Liver xMedicilies now before the public that acts as a Cathartic, easier, milder, anil more eflfectnal than any other medicine known. It is not only a Cathartic, hut a Liver remedy, acting first on the Liver to eject its morbid matter, then on the stomach and bowels to carry off that matter, thus accomplishing two pur poses effectually, without any of the pa'nful tool ings experienced in tho operation of most Cathar tics. It strengthens tho system at the same time that it purges it; and when taken daily in moder ate doses, will strengthen and build it up with unusual rapidity. The Liver is one ofi fft the principal regula tors of the human to- i w* dy; and when it per forms its functions! i well, the powers are fully developed. The [S stomach is almost en tirely dependent on r the hoalthy action of the Liver for tho per-i formanco of its func tions; when the slum- *7 ach is at fault, the bowels are at fault,! and the wholo system sulfers in consequence: of one organ—the Liver—having ceased m to do its duty. For the diseases of thatj J organ, one of the pro prietors has made it /S his study, in a practice of more than twenty years, to find some remedy wherewith to counteract the many derangements to! W which it is liable. To prove that thisj remedy is at last found, any person troubled L, with Liver Com plaint, in any of its H forms, lias but to try a bottle, and conviction w is certain. These Gums remove i vi all morbid or bad mat ter from tho systoni,i Tf\ supplying in their place a healthy flow of yi bile, invigorating the stomach, causing food to digest well, puri fying tho blood. giving tone and health to the whole machine-1 W ry, removing the cause of the disease—effect-1 L ing a radical cure. __ Bilious attacks are! are cured, and, what is better, prevented, H >y the occasional use of the Liver Invigo- jrator. One dose after eating J is sufficient to relieve the stomach and pre- C ivent tho food from rising and souring. 4 Only ono doso taken [before retiring, pre vents Nightmare. m j Only one dose taken LJ jat night, loosens the bowels gently, and ■ , j cures Coativeness. One dose taken after: m jeach mea! will cure Dyspepsia. One dose of two! tea-spoonfuls will al ways relieve Sick j, j Headache. One bottle taken for| female obstruction re moves the cause of the: g, | disease, and makes a perfect cure. | y j Only onedoseimme- wj diately relieves Chol ic, while Ono dose, often re- J peated, is a sure cure for Cholera Jlorbu3, and a preventive of Cholera. ■ Only one bottio is needed to throw out of the system the effects H of medicine after a long sickness. One bottio taken for /"A Jaundice removes all sallowness or uu- If* natural color from the skin. One dose taken a short time before eat ing gives vigor to the \J appetite, and makes food digest well. One doso often re- l_] peated, cures Chronic Diarrhoea in its worst Hy forms, while Summer and Bowel complaints “ yield almost to tho first doso. i Ono or two doses [S cures attacks caused by W'orms in Cliil- r dren;thoreisnosurer, safer, or speedier rem- edy in the world, as it never fails. LJ | A few bottles cures J Dropsy, by exciting the absorbents. _ We take pleasure in Q recommending this medicine as a proven- *’ tive for Fever and Ague, Chill level, ~ aud all Fevers of a Bilious Typo. Itoper- m ates with certainty, and thousands are wil- C* ling to testify to its wonderful virtues. t All who used it uro giving their uuauimous tes timony in its favor. •Kir* Mix water in the mouth witli tho luvigora tor, and swallow both together. THE LIVER INVIGORATOIt Is a Scientific Medical Discovery, and is daily work ingicures almost too great for bolief. It cures as if by magic, even tho first dose giving benefit, and seldom more than one bottle is required to cure any kind of Liver Complaint, from the worst Jaun dice or Dyspepsia to a common Headache, all of which are the result of a DISEASED LIVER.
