Kaue’s Arctic Expedition.—Very few persons, while setting at home comfortably in their easy chairs, can form an adequate idea of the hardships endured by the men who followed the lamented Dr. Kane, on tho Grinnell Arctic Expe dition. Beside tho suffering caused by the inhos pitable climate, tbo intense cold brought on rheu matism, stiffness of the joints, Ac., and the privation from fresh meat and vegetables produced that terrible disease, scurvy. Their sufferings from these causes were very great, and would have been unendurable but for the happy results of a Lini ment invented expressly for their use by the cele brated Dr. A.G. Bragg, a plentiful supply of which was taken along with the expedition. This Lini ment proved so valuable, and its merits were so fully confirmed, under tike most unfavorable cir cumstances, that Dr. Bragg has been induced to commence its manufacture for the public. This Gin, distilled in London from sound Bar ley, under the surveillance of tho British Ex cise Laws, is delicately flavored with a tinc ture of the Italian Juniper Burry, and some of the most vuluahlo restoratives of the Vegetable Kingdom, rendering it, in the opinion of the most eminent medical men, the purest and safest stimulant or diuretic drink in use. It is a delicious tonic, of a soft and delicate fla vor, differing entirely from any other Gin, and devoid of that harsh, acrid taste, which renders the article known us Holland Gin or Schnapps so objectionable. Though not intended as a medicine, it is recom mended by physicians generally in cases of Dys pepsia, Gout, Rheumatism, Dropsy, Gkavel, Colic, Choleka, Fever and Auc, Stricture, Diseases of the Uri.vary Oroans, the Kidneys and the Bow els, Nervous Debility, Ac., whilst tho weaker sex will find by its adoption a sure relief from those I distressing annoyances which frequently attend j their delicate organization Dr. Valentine Mott, of New Y'ork, the highest medical authority, pronounces Charles’ London Cordial Gin “not only superior to any other, nut the best articlo of tho kiud he has ever seen.” It is peculiarly adapted to settlers in the South ern aud Western States, as well as for travellers exposed to changes of water aud air. Numerous cases of Dyspepsy, of the most aggravated character, which were abandoned as incurable by some of the Medical Faculty, have, by the mo of this Elixir, been re stored to perfect health, as attested certificates testify. April 10-ly COMMERCIAL. DAILY SUN OFFICE, \ Columbus, Ga., January 18,1859. j COTTON—Tho transactions yesterday were larger than l.as been usual for Monday, amount ing to 526 bales at prices ranging from 9% to 11c., principal sales were Strict Middlings at 11c. Shipped past week 1384 Shipped previously 67357-58741 bales. Stock on band 37452 bales. When wo closed our last weekly review, the Bth January, we reported tbo market dull, although without any quotable decline. The sales of the week then ended had amounted to about 3.500 bales. The market during tho week now under review has exhibited no feature worthy of note, and while tho amount of sales from day to day has lluctuated, tho quotations have been remarkably uniform. Occupying, as we do, a central geographical posi tion between the Atlantic aud Gulf ports, the ex treme dullness and decline in the Atlantic has been counteracted by tho more favorable influ ences from tho Gulf, where, notwithstanding tho heavy receipts and increased estimates of produc tion, prices aro maintained most remarkably. So large a proportion of tho crop being received at New Orleans that market must control prices, ami wo are more inclined to look in that direction for quotations than to tho cast. Tho sales for tho week havo boon 2.110 bales, Monday 461 bales, Tuesday 105 bales, Weddesday 692 bales, Thursday 453 bales, Friday 663 bales, and Saturday 125 bales. We would remark that there is oftou con siderable transactions outside of warehouses not made public, and if regularly reported would swell tho weekly transactions. The receipts for tho week are again on tho in crease, boing more than double tho corresponding week of last year. Shipments per rail road havo boon retarded, but now that all tho damages have been repairod, and the Muscogee Rail Road being now in fine order with an abundance of cars, wo expect heavy business in shipments during the present, and for some weeks to come.
