Political News. —At the New Year’s lovee, Napoleon made a menacing remark to the Austrian Minister—or at least it was regarded as a menacing remark —and is attracting much attention.— It created a panic in financial circles, and caused a decline of ono per cent, at tho Paris Bourse, and half per cent, in Lon don. The words used by Napoleon to the Austrian Minister, were: “1 regret that our relations with your government are not as good as they were, but request you to tell tho Emperor that my personal feel ings aro unchanged.” Italian affairs are getting more and more threatening. Later news had been received from In dia, but it was generally unimportant. The amnesty granted by tho Queen was working slowly but well. Tho government of Spaiu has formally declared, through her Ministry, that she never will sell Cuba, and she protests against (ho insulting hypothesis to the contrary implied in the President’s Mes sage. The motion supporting the minis terial declaration was unanimously ap proved. iSpain has obtained full satisfaction from Mexico for tho Tampico affair. A formidable conspiracy has been dis covered at Cracow, in Austria. Servia is now quiet, since the National Assembly lias been constituted. Lombardy, in Italy, is almost in a stuto of siege, and news from all parts of that country represent the condition of aflairs as betokening approaching and serious troubles. N* tv Wind Water Elevator. In company with a number of gontle mcn, wo paid a visit on Tuosday to the residence of Mr. C. A. Peabody, over in Alabama, to witness the practical opera tion of Holiday’s New Wind Engine, which has just been constructed, to raise water to a tank elevated about forty feet above tho ground, to supply water into tho rooms of Mr. C.’s dwelling, a very tall two-story building, and to numerous other parts of the premises. The opparatus is the invention of a Mr. Holiday, is manu factured at South Coventry, Conn., and was put up under tho superintendence of Mr. Thomas Burnham, agent for the Southern States, whose address is this city. The working of this engine is so well described by tho editor of the En quirer, who was presont at the time of our visit, that wo cannot do better than copy it. * Ho says: All who witnessed the workings of this Engine under the inlluenco of tho gentle and fitful breeze, and inspected the sim ple but ingenious contrivances which make it a perfect and reliable self-regu lator, were convinced of its success and economy. Tho engine is set in motion by a very gentle wind, aud by an ingenious device the wings so conform sur faces to tho volume of tho wind as to maintain an equable and unvarying speed. This adjustment overcomes the great ob jection to wind-mills, that they will not movo without a brisk wind and in a high ono they will go with such velocity and violence ns soon to tear the works to pie ces. Mr. Peabody’s Engine raises tho water from a well yielding a plentiful supply, near by, to a cistern some forty or fifty feet above the ground ; the cistern holds some 6,000 gallons, and its eleva tion is sufficient to force the water through pipes to any part of Mr. l’,’s now bouse, to supply in constant play a handsome jet in tho yard, aud to convey a stream to any part of beautiful grounds which ho has so highly improved. Another peculi arity of this improved wind-mill is that it requires not tho least attention even to prevent a waste of water, as by a novel lloating valve it closes the aperture through which the water enters as soon as it reaches a cortuiu height in the cis tern, ami re-npens it again as soon as the water falls below that height. Os the economy of the engine, as well as its great convenience and beautiful processes, there canjjot be a doubt. It will bo one of the chief attractions at the now beauti ful placo which Mr. Peabody selected in a dismal pine forest aud has mado to bloom and flourish like nn oasis in a desert. For tho purposo of raising water to supply railroad tanks, this wind engine of Hob day’s is peculiarly adapted, and we per ceivo from certificates sent to tho compa ny that it is extensively used iu many parts of the west, for that purposo, with great satisfaction and success. Our rail road companies should give it an exami nation without delay. Wo are glad to learn that Mr. Burnham thinks arrange ments will be made for quickly construct ing ono for the M. & W. P. Rail Road Company, at tho Opelika Depot in this city. From many certificates which the agent has shown us, wo select and copy tho fol lowing, from Mr. E. Moore, proprietor of the Eagle Hotel, Chicago. This was among the first put up, the machine being patented in August, 1866: Chicago, Jan. 25, 1858. One of “Halladay’s Wind Mills” was erected on my farm, in Dunton, 111., iu the fall of 1856, and is now operating in tho mo t satisfactory manner, forcing water through a half inch lead pipe more than ono half mile to my house and barn, in quantity sufficient to supply more than 200 bead of cattle. I consider my farm worth more than one thousand dollars more in consequence of the improvement. ; i “ JJJJ IIACON ! BACON I ACHOIOJS lot of RIBBED SIDES and SIIOUI.
