This company of popular aud talented artistes closed their engagement in this city last night, aud leave to-day for Augusta, where they enter upen an en gagement Monday night. They have been with us three weeks, and the large and intelligent audiences nightly assem bled to witness the performances, tell best of their appreciation by our citizens. We regret their arrangements will not permit their return again this season, but trust they will pay our city a visit next winter. Theatrical. Mr. and Mrs. W. 11. Crisp, with their talented Gaiety Company, as will be seen by reference to our advertising columns, open at Temperance Hall on Monday night. Mr. C. and lady are well known to the patrons of the drama in our city, having appeared on our boards on several occasions before. From the reputation of the whole company we are prepared to see the parts they undertake well re presented. We bespeak for them a liberal patronage. The Plank Road. A friend called our attention to the present condition of the Plank Road crossings, on yesterday. The condition in which they are now, is anything but creditable either to the owners of the road or the Mayor and Council. There is scarcely a place where one can pass without being buried up in mud. We feel assured that our very attentive Mar shal will see that the nuisance is re moved. Rock Island Paper Mills. From an experience of nearly three years we are prepared to recommend these mills to our brethren of the Press, not only on account of their superior manu facture, but tho gentlemanly courtesy of those connected with them. Col. John G. Winter, the President of the Company, has no superior as a gentleman of accom modating and kind feelings, and whose enterprising spirit has few equals in Georgia. Our Florida cotemporaries would do well to patronize these mills. —Bainbridge Argus. For the Daily Suu. Eds. Sun: There seoms to bu some dif ficulty in deciding how a successor of the late County Treasurer, Edward Birdsong, Esq., shall be appointed. I have been informed that a gentloman of known in tegrity and responsibility is willing to take tho office, if tho Inferior Court will give him the opportunity, giving all ne cessary bonds for tho faithful performance of his duties, and pledge himself to turn over all that he may receivo for his ser vices, to the family of Mr. Birdsong.— This 1 consider a very liberal and praiso worthy act—one which every friend of tho widow and orphan would commend and approve. I therefore suggest to tho Court, if it is compatible with the laws, to give the appointment as indicated, and they will have the hearty approval and co-operation of every friend of the FATHERLESS. The Rope (Question. We saw a bill of lading, signed a day or two ago, by tho Captain of a British ship, in which he obligated the ship to doliver the cotton embraced in the bill, with six ropes on eaoh bale, this being the number ptaoedj on them by tho consignor. Tho ship placed ono more rope on each bale, making seven in all, bnt the Captain was allowed to remove it ho.saw fit to do so. Othor consignors refuso to al low the Bhip to removo any of the ropes, no matter how many may be put on at her expense, and for her convenience.— This difficulty has arisen, not so much from tho value of tho ropes themselves, as from the injury their removal does to the cotton. Wo hear it was quite customary to cut oil all the ropes except just enough to keep the bale from falling to pieces.— Tho remedy for (he difficulty has com menced in the right way, nnd all trouble can be saved by making the bill of lading specify what will bo exacted in the mat ter. —Savannah Republican. Lady Gore Ousely is accused of more mischief. Tho new charge against her is that her intrigues produced the removal of Lord Napier. She wishes her husband to succeed Napier at Washington, and caused the removal of his lordship, but did not succeed in giving his place to her spouse. So the story goes. If Judge Walker, of the New Orleans Delta, is good authority, the British government would have done well to have appointed the lady herself to represent Her Majesty, the (Jueen, at the “Court of Washington.” Candidates of the “Opposition” for the Presidency in 1860 are becoming very abundant. The crop during the present session of Congress will, doubtless, be over the average. The Washington correspon dent of the New York Express introduced two new candidates to tho public, tho other day, in a single letter. Chief Jus tice Robertson, ofKy., the only surviving member of the Congress whioh enacted the Missouri Compromise, and Kennett Raynor, of North Carolina, are the gen tlemen. I TELEGRAPHIC. The steamship Arabia has arrived at Halifax, with advices from Liverpool to the loth. Her news is ono week later than the Niagara’s. The news by tho Arabia reports sales of the weok of 40,000 bales. The market had declined J-d for the week, and holders were pressing cotton on the market at the decline. At Havre, Orleans Ires ordinaire was quoted at 101. January 12, 1859. tapl9 Kane’s Arctic Kxpeilitioii.—Very few persons, while setting at home comfortably in their oasy chairs, can form an adequate idea of the hardships endured by tho men who followed the lamented Dr. Kane, on tho Orinnoll Arctic Expe dition. Beside the sulfering caused by the inhos pitable cViolate, the intense cold brought on rheu matism, stiffness of the joints, Ac., and the privation from fresh meat and vegetables produced that terrible disease, scurvy. Their sufferings from these causes were very groat, and would have been unendurable but for the happy results of a Lini ment invented expressly for their uso by the cele brated Dr. A.Q. Bragg, a plentiful supply of which was taken along with tho expedition. This Lini ment proved so valuable, and its merits were so fully confirmed, under'the most unfavorable cir cumstances, that Dr. Bragg has been induced to commence its manufacture for the public. NEW YORK, Jan. 27.—Tho cotton market was very dull to-day, as dealers are generally waiting for the steamer's news, now fully due. NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 27.—Sales of Cotton, 12- 500 hales, at unchanged prices. Sugar firm. Corn steady, at 95 cents. Mess Pork advancing, and quoted at sl9. Whisky 26% cents. MONTGOMERY, Jan. 27.—The Cotton market firm at 10% to 10% for Middlings, and 11 to 11% for Good Middlings. Sales to-day 600 hales—re ceipts 1200 hales. NASHVILLE, Jan. 26.—The transactions in Bacon wore vory limited, the receipts being light, with a correspondingly light demand. Wo quote hog round at 9c., Shoulders 7%c., Hams 8% to 9c., and Clear Sides 9%c.from wagons. From store % to %c. advance on our quotations is demanded. Lard finds roady sale at 10 to 10%0. for primo, and 8% to 9%c. for No. 1, from wagons. Groaso is quoted at 6 to 7 cents. SAVANNAH, .Jau. 27.—Sales of Cotton to-day 1,500 hales. The market was firm anil generally unchanged. The sales of tho week were 5,860 bales, and tho roceipts 17,740 bales. The increaso of receipts at this port now reach 192,790 bales, aud the stoek on band and on shipboard is 67,000 bales.
