Sjjt’ flaiji -Sun. Argentine nguln before (lie Mayor. Richmond, March 28.—Tlio examina tion of Edward Argentine, for forgery, was to have taken place at the Mayor’s Court to-day. Tho witnesses from Pe tersburg, (Mr. Thomas Whyte, of tho house of Paul & Ilinton, and Mr. Archer, teller in the Parmer’s Rank,) were in at tendance. Argentine having ro-consider ed his previous decision, employed Col. August to defend him, and there seemed to be nothing to prevent an immediate investigation of tho case. All at once it was ascertained that tho forged check was not in Richmond ; and the production of this being indispensable, the Mayor postponed tho whole matter until to-mor row, (Tuesday) and directed an officer to proceed to Petersburg to procure tho check. A bank officer and a police officer from Charleston arrived hero this morning for the purpose of seeing Argentine. They went to the city jail and at once identified him as the individual who took $.'5,200 from tho Union Rank, (S. C.) by a similar process to that by which his operations were conducted here. Argentine is evi dently in for it.— Cor. Petersburg Erpress, - - -♦ Knt I.ovcngood unit t lie Locomotive. The first locomotive Hut ever saw was standing with steam up, and nearly ready to go, making no noiso save a suppressed humming from the safety valve. Hut had, in his skeery, cautious way, clam bered to the top of tbo tender to find out “what sort ovo a beast” it wag, when the engineer slyly gave tbo whistle lever a long pull—shay-y-y ! Hut lit twenty feet distant on a pile of cord.wood, and after running until lie got straightened up, he turned round all eyes, and said, “What iu the deuce did you do tn it, mister TANARUS” Just at this moment a negro carno trundling a truck, with a cooking stove, a joint of pipe on the flue hole, and pots itid pans hanging all round. Hut took a look first at the stove and then at the locomotive ; a light broke out over his perplexity, and he shouted to the en gineer : “Oh, yes, 1 understands it all now; the darned ole critter was ji.il a nickerin’ for her colt r Mnrdl (tins. A stranger, on a visit to this city, says the N. O. Delta, requests us to explain the origin of Mardi Gras, and the reason of the peculiar festivities which attend its annual return. Mardi Gras moans literally in French fat Tuesday the name given to the last day (Tuesday) before Ash Wednesday, the first of tho forty days fast called Lout, so called because it, was tho longest of file lasts —hnty in old Hason, meaning long. Mardi Gras, then, being the last day bo fore Lent in which feasting and festivo sports were in order—that is, the last day of Carnival, (crimevale, Latin,) or fare well to meat, was naturally made the most of in Roman Catholic countries for a general abandonment to merry-making and buffoonery. It has always been cel ebrated with the greatest eclat in Rome and Venice, aud many authorities assert that the festival was derived in Italy from the Saturnalia of pagan Rome, modified by the early Christians. —- Dentil of a .llnnimotli “lan —Weight 07 s Pounds. Coroner O’Keefe held an inquest on .Sunday, at No. 811 Rruadway, upon the body of Asher A. Skilling, a limn of mon ster size, weighing 078 pounds, who died on Sunday night of an alfection of the liver. The deceased was n native of Portland, Me., 3D years of age, and has kept, a fish and oyster stand at the above number. Two years ago he weighed but little over 100 pounds, lie was of a jovial disposition and had many friends. His great obesity prevented him from walking but a short distance at a time, aud for the past two years he has been mostly at home. Two weeks ago ho was informed that the house where he lived was to be pulled down. This made him unhappy, and he was attacked with ill ness, and died as aliovo stated. —New York Journal of Commerce. THE LIVER INViaORATOR. PREPARED BY DR. SANFORD, Compounded entirely from Gums, IS one of the best Purgatives and Liver Medicines now before the public that acts as a Cathartic, easier, milder, and mors effectual than auy other medicine known. It is not only a Cathartic, but a Liver iumedy, acting first on the Liver to eject its morbid matter, then on the stomach aud bowels to carry off that matter, thus accomplishing two pur poses effectually, without any of the painful leel mga experienced iu the operation of most Cathar tics. it strengthens tbo system at the same timo that it purges it; and when taken daily iu moder ate doses, will strengthen aud build it up with unusual rapidity. The Liver is one of j the principal regula tors of the human bo-j UJ!dy; und when it per forms its functions , jwell, the powers are fully developed.
