DAILY SC X. Wednesday Morning, June 29. New Advertisements. Our young people will be pleased to learn that a public ball comes off at the Pine Knot White Sulphur springs on the evening of the 14th July. Wo expect to see a large crowd of the fashion and beau ty of our city in attendance. The Sons of Malta meet this evening. Let all interested take notice of the sale of hogs on the 4th of July. See advertisement of fresh Goshen But ter, received at BeGraffenreid's Corner. J. W. Pease has just received a fine collection of new and beautiful Stereosco pic Views. Call and see them. Launch. The new steamboat hull is to be launch ed this afternoon at 4 o’clock, from Blain’s boat yard. Mayor’s Court. His honor had but little business before him yesterday. Such as were up were disposed of with promptness. The May or’s Court is getting to be considered as one that will not be trifled with. Fine Steel Pens. We have been presented, by Messrs. Chaffin & Johnson, with a box of real No. 1, and no mistake, steel pens. They are smooth and very clastic, and just the pen for a gentleman’s desk. We commend their use to such as do not use gold pens. They are manufactured for and sold by Chaffin & Johnson, whero any one wish ing to patronize a home enterprise can be supplied. Still they Come. Every day brings new evidence of the stability and promptness of the Insurance Companies who have located agencies in our midst. We are this morning author ised to state that the Charter Oak Fire and Marine, of Hartford, and the Girard Fire and Marine Insurance Company of Philadelphia, have promptly settled up their losses, by the late disastrous fire in our city. Our very worthy fellow citizen, F. It. Shackelford, is agent for the above companies. Council Meeting. The Board of Aldermen met for regu lar meeting on last Monday. Nothing of any importance was done, save .the pass ing of a few accounts for payment, after the July interest on rail road bonds had been paid. There was a vast amount of informal discussion indulged in, which we suppose the Mayor permitted, as there was no business to transact, and the board had no pressing business demanding their at tention. Council adjourned, to meet on next Tuesday, the sth, with closed doors, to arrange for the meeting of stockholders in the Mobile and Girard llail Hoad, at which meeting, we trust, Maj. J. H. How ard will be fully sustained. Choice and Cheap Dress Goods. Our lady readers will find much of in terest to them inouradvertising columns. Mr. Hunter has just received by express, some of the most beautiful patterns of Bertha Capes that we have seen for a long time. They are beautiful. Nance & Ren froe are determined to close out their stock of goods, and as they say, will sell at and below cost. We looked at several of their silk patterns, which are the rich est goods we ever feasted our eyes upon, which they offer to sell at about half the customary rates, other goods in propor tion, This is certainly one of the rarest opportunities ever offered for choice and fashionable dress goods at reduced prices, which has occurred in the city, and which may not occur agaiu for years. We advise every lady who reads this to call at their store and see for themselves whether what we assert is true. Mrs. Dessau, whose good taste in se lections every one knows, is also deter mined to close out her entire summer stock. Every lady that has visjted her tastefully arranged rooms will cheerfully bear testimony, that her goods are no humbug. It costs nothing to make an examination and see if she will do as she says, of which we have not the shadow of a doubt. After making large purchases of these various parties, or any the other of our dry goods merchants, call in at Hunt, Ware & Co’s, and buy yourself one of those celebrated sewing machines, which save so much money, health and time, Grant Mills. We paid a visit yesterday to this estab lishment, formerly the Coweta Mills, which was purchased by Messrs. Grant & Son, of Upson county, Georgia, wo believe, and placed under the superin tendence of Mr. Moore. We were pleased to see a portion of the machinery in op eration, the balance of which will be put in motion as fast as tho proper hands can bo obtained to run it. A portion of the old machinery will be displaced for more improved patterns, thus giving this mill an equal showing with the other mills of the city, and enable it to oompete suc cessfully with any mill in the Union. At present they are manufacturing a very superior articlo of Negro Linseys, Osna burgs and Yarns, all of which-we found fully up to the mark. The gentlemanly accountant informed us there was an ex cellent demand for what work they turned off, and instead of hunting up buyers they hunted him up. This speaks vol umes, not only for this mill but for the manufacturing interest of our city. Ten years ago there was actually no demand for the goods then made, now not one of our mills can keep up with the tide of orders from far and near flowing in upon them, and the demnnd is daily widening and increasing. One hundred more mills could here soon find ready sale at their doors for every yard of cloth and pound of yarn thread manufactured. We may advert to this subject again. In the meantime we commend the Grant Mills to the consideration of merchants and planters in making their purchases. BELIEF IN TEN MINUTES! BRYANS’ fulmowic wafshsi ! WHITESIDE & 00., ACEE & IVERSON, mhlG-eowly and by ail respectable Druggists SHELBY SPRINGS^ SHELBY COUNTY, ALA. frUIIS well-known and pleaa -L ant watering place has A —D changed hands, and will he open for tho reception of visitors on JBB WEDNESDAY Tlie First Day of Juno next. The entire building is undergoing thorough re pairs and all the Cabins will be newly ceiled and painted, and all leaks, stopped—in a word, all things will look, and bo, as good as if thoy were new. I have had many years experience in Hotel keeping, and flatter myself that I will be able, with good assistance, to satisfy all reasonable persons, and make guests feel as if they were at homo. I will have good servants, a clean house, and nice furniture, and as far as in my power lies, cater to the w ishes of all. The table will he as good as the moat experienced cooks and full supplies can make it. The Hall will be open duriug the season with a full band of music, for tho amusement of the guests. As to the mineral waters, they are too well known to require any word in tlieii behalf from me—there are live fountains of healing water ever flowing, saying “ come and be cured.” The health of Shelby cannot be surpassed in the United States; and as to comfort aud beauty, it stands unequalled in the South. There is scarce a day in the heat of summer, that the mercury rises higher t*an 80 degrees; yet it is not damp or any way disagreeable. Over a square of ten acres, covered with a most luxuriant curpet of beautiful grass, there is an almost perpetual shade, rendering this the most delightful summer resort in the country. Think of these comforts here, so easily obtained, and compare them with the close, hot, sultry, sickly towns, aud Southern farms, and you will doubtless decide to come to Shelby Springs, and spend tho summer where you can breathe the pure Southern air, ho waited on by Southern servants, and a Southern Landlord, and thanked for your money, aud nothing spared to give you the worth of your bill. I have ample room for 250 persons, and can ac commodate 15 or 20 families. Persons in want of rooms tor their families would do well to write, advising me of the number they wish, the number of persons in the family, and the time they expect to come, in order that I may be able to have every thing arranged satisfactorily by the time of their arrival. All letters will be promptly answered. I wish the public to give mu a call before going North, where they go in quest of pleasure, but have to return South to find it. BENJ. SCREWS, Prop’r.
