Her glos-y lockscurlcd under so as to give the effect of a roll on each side of the face, extending to the centre at the back of the neck, where a bow of lace and ribbon finished the coif fure.”—-V. V. Express. It is hard to withstand the dictates of fashion, but we hope and believe the gen tler sex will effectually resist the daring innovation upon one of their prescriptive rights. We are glad to see that short hair is but “modestly gaining ground.” “I.oug hair is_the glory of woman,” is the emphatic declaration of the “ Book of all books.” Crinoline was originally the name of a Parisian modiste —one Madame Crinoline, who kept a set of dressmaking rooms in the Rue de la Paix. It eventually came into use to denote the article most in re pute at her establishment. She it was who, by the’itiventicn of horse-hair woven jnto a sort of cloth and manufactured into petticoats, enabled tho fair sex to dispense with that clumsy abomination which always placed them, if not in a headlong hurry, certainly in—a bustle. The name of the petticoat was given from that of the inventor, as has frequently happened; the crinoline, the petticoat, was derived from Crinoline, the dress maker. NAPOLEON BONAPARTE. FROM SAMVEL ROGERS’ RECOLLECTIONS. An anecdote at the Tuileries has some thing of a personal interest: * “I have often dined with the King of the Netherlands. The Northern Kings admit subjects and strangers to dine with them. The Bourbons never did, I believe at Paris, except in my instance. At Ghent perhaps the etiquette was departed from; but I believe lam the only person who has dined with Louis XVIII, at Paris. I have dined often with him. He sat at six, and when dinner was an nounced, was wheeled in from the room in which lie had received mo. The ta ble was large, and he sat between the two ladies, the Duchessee of Berri and Angouleme. I sat between Monsieur and the Duke’ of d’Angouleme. They were waited upon jiy gentlemen—l, by a servant—and of course, best served. The dinner was exquisite. We sat down at six, aud rose at £even : and then all sat aDd talked with the king till eight, a avoiding all political subjects. The king ate froely, but mixed water with his wiiie which was champagne. The king will not go out in the carriage Unt on gjeat occasions. They havo contrived a ma chine to lift him into it by ; but his in dolence of his fear of the caricaturists, ! or both, keep him at home, lie is fond ! of mots, and full of esprit, rather than sensible; and did not at first consent to to read the speeches prepared for him by bis ministers, preferring to speak <Vabun dance.” The Duke has no very high opinion of those who wrote on his warlike operations, and of this he made no secret. The se vere verdict on Scott would not have been anything to the romancer had he heard it: “Scott's Life of Napoleon is of no value The tolorable part of it i9 what relates to his retreat from Moscow. 1 havo thought much on that subject, and have made ma ny inquires concerning it. 1 gave him my papers, lie has used some, not all.” Os Southey the great materials, aud means well; but he is too much influenc ed by anything that makes for him, even by an assertion in a newspaper. I do not think much of Southey. The Subal- j tern is excellent, particularly in the A- j merican expedition to New Orleans. He describes all he secs.” The Duke, ns we know from these con versations and from other sources, occa sionally contemplated writing commenta ries on his campaigns iu the manner of fiesar and Sir Francis Vere. Os Ciciar he was a raroful i-tuUent “Hail Cicsar’s L’ommnentarics with me in India” he says, “and learnt much from them—fortiyiug my camp every night us he did. 1 pass ed over the rivers os he did, by means of baskets and boats of basket work; only 1 think I impoved upon him, construct ing them into bridges, and always forti fying them and leaving them guarded to return by them if ncccssury. in nuotli- j cr place, referring to this longing to be- I come his own historian, the Duke says : l 1 should like much to tell the truth ; but if 1 did I should bo torn to pcices, hero i or abroad. 1 have, indeed, no time to j write, much ns 1 might wish to do so ; I and I am still (December, 1827) too much in the world to do it.” ♦ The following is from the Nashville 1 Union & American: Till Rains and tii* Chops.—The recent j rains appear to have been very geueral > in both Tennessee and Kentucky, aud coming at a most opportune time, must , have been of immense advantage to the ) growing corn crop, l’hedftwth had not permanently injured the crop, except in certain localities, where no rain has fal len lor several weeks. Should the soil- I son continue favorable from this forward the corn crop will bo very fine. \\c have not heard that cotton has yet differed from the drouth, but the ruin will be of immense service to this crop, and will cause it to grow amazingly. Asa sample of the coolness of railroad | conductors, the Harrisburg Patriot & i Union tells the following tough story: , “ One of them having been discharged . from his trust, applied to be reinstated.— 1 ” \ou were dismissed, 1 said the Super intendent, austerely, “for letting your train come twice into collision.” “The very reason,” eaid the other, interrupt ing him, “ why I ask to be restored.”— “How so*” “Why, sir, if I hud any | doubt before as to whether two trains can pass each other on the same track, 1 am now entirely satisfied; I hive tried it twice, sir, and it c--a-n-t be done, and I j am not likely to try it again.” COUNTING HOUSE CALENDAR.
