Phelps, j of the (iaudy Grape, and a variety of j brands of Cigars. Win. E. Lamar, Deputy Sheriff of this ! county, died very suddenly at his resi dence in this city on Wednesday last, j His remains were deposited in the tomb ! yesterday afternoon with Masonic cere- j monies, lie leaves a largo circle of ! friends and relatives to mourn liis loss. Is it Rlglitl We mean to continue to raise tho side walks iu the city. Already they are from | four to twelvo inches higher than the lots, making drainage almost impossible, ex cept at heavy expense, often more than j ’ many of opr citizens arc ablo or willing to pay. Wo were surprised and astound ed to notice the carts engaged in raising ‘tho side walk in front of the residences of Messrs. Bnrschall, Johnson and It tun rsey, a day or so since. This walk was one of the dry est and most beautiful in the city, and higher than the lots. Where, then, tlio necessity of raising it still high er? Wo confess we “don’t understand,” I and would be pleased to bo enlightened i in tho views entertained by the Street j Committee. Tire Hog Law Is Abolished. At least we presume so, from the num ber of grantors which are perambulating our streets. We bavo always had a pride , in seeing the laws and ordinances, made ! by our city authorities, enforced, even if bad ones, until tho same arc repealed. j The hog law may be a good one, or it may not; bo that as it may, it ,s a law made by tho proper authorities, aud should be enforced, or repealed. It may be our Council have invaded their (tho hogs’) constitutional rights, aud they may be, possibly, standing out in defiance of the law making power of tho Council, and | are determined to test the question before the Supreme Court, If such be so, we j trust our City Attorney will not shrink j from a faithful dischargo of his duty, aud Marshal Hughes intimidated thereby from properly penning the porkers until the ordinance shall be repealed. Puglt autl Dougins Mr. Pugh, the recently elected succcs- , sor to tho Hon. Eli S. Shorter, to Con gress, from the second District of Ala- j bama, while addressing the people of Lowndc3 county, being interrogated as to his probable support of Judgo Doug las, should lie be the nominee of the Charleston Convention, is reported to have promptly responded as follows: lie repudiated Stephen A. Douglas and his odious doctrines—his squatter sovc- ! roignty—his territorial policy—his con- j struction of the Cincinnati platform, and tho whole string of his vile teachings.— j l'eing asked if he would support Douglas under the Charleston Convention, he said emphatically, “No, I would not support Stephen A. Douglas if he was nominated on my own platform.” lie said that he regarded Douglas as a corrupt man, and unworthy of the support of true patriots, no matter what platform he might run on, or what promises he might make. If i Douglas should receive the nomination Os tho Charleston Convention, he advised I that we nominate a separate ticket, and appoint our best men as electors and beat him. lie advised Southern rights dem- j ocrats to go to the Charleston Convention and demand the endorsement of tho Cin cinnati platform, the repudiation of squatter sovereignty, the protection of slave proporty in the territories, and the recognition of all tho rights claimed by tho South. If tho Southern members could not control tho Convention and car- i ry these points,’that they should then quit the concern and come home. He desired to make one more effort to pro- ! servo tho Union on principle, but bad very, little confidence in the success of the effort. If it failed, then he wanted the South to bo uuited as ono man, and burst tho unholy bands and take an inde pondeut position out of tho Union, liy this stop, the South could lose nothing, having tho resources and power to con trol tho manufacturing and commercial interests of tho world. ♦ —-— Louisville and Nu*livl!lr Hall ltorul. In a long article, giving a discriptiou of an excursion oil tho above read, the l.ouisville Courier says : Tho main road is now being run ovor by daily trains of ears from Louisville across Orcen itiver at Mumfordvillo, a distance of 74 miles. At the Nashville cud, tho cars aro run ning over the wholo distance of 71 miles between Howling (ircen mid Nashville, except uino miles, which aro now ready lor the iron. Thorc are, therefore, 13(1 miles of tho main road, over which tho cars are now running, which leave only 48 mi lei yet to bo completed, (in these 48 miles much the greater part of the work is done, and the cars will run over the wholo line, from Louisvillo to Nash ville, boforo the first day of January next, t MILLINERY AT COST!
