JAMES McPHILLIPS, 140 Broad Street* Masonic Building. Columbus, Ga., May 31. ~ DR. COOK’S ! MEDICATED VAPOR! AN INFALLIBLE Remedy for Diseased Eyes. IMIIB wonderful preparation was discovered by | Dr. Cook when reducod almost to despair by j the failure of all the remedies prescribed by the | Physicians aud Opticians of tho age; and its j miraculous effects, in restoring bis own vision, and tho greut success which bus attended its ap plication in a large number of cuses—NEVER FAILING TO GIVE RELIEF and affect a cure when persisted in—induces him to lay it before tho public, iu order that its merits may be tested, I and all who are suffering from diseased Eyes be enubled to obtain relief. The “MEDICATED VAPOR” is a Purely Scientific Compound! Very simple and harmless in its application, but a most POWERFUL REMEDIAL AGENT; and after having been extensively used in tho treatment of ! Diseased Eyes, is confidently recommended as the MOST SPEEDY and RELIABLE REMEDY iu ! cases of Acute aud Chronic Opthalmia, incipient Cataract, Amorosis, Staplyloma, Ac., ever pre scribed. It is also an iuvaluablo remedy for Nervous Headache, Neuralgia of tbe Eye and Face—dis eases which have heretofore resisted all medical skill. It has also been tested in several cases of Total Blindness with such wonderful success, he is in duced to believe that no case should be pronounced incurable as long as one spark of vitality remains iu the eye. The Medicated Vapor is a local remedy, and appeals directly to the parts affected—promotes absorption, and by its powerful tonic properties, iu fuses new life aud vigor iuto the nerves that have become impaired by disease, and enables tbe ! Eye to re-act and regain its former healthful tone and action. These medicinal virtues, combined with the neat and portuble form iu which it is put i up, render It tho most convenient and efficacious ■ remedy for diseases of the Kyo ever before offered j to tho public. DR. COOK has many certificates to prove the truth of tho above statements, but does not deem it necessary to publish them, knowing the want - of confidence in such things unless the public are { acquainted with tbe parties and all the circum stances. He, therefore, oilers his Medicated Vapor 1 upon its own merits, fueling assured it will stand the most rigid test and give the most complete satisfaction. Prepared and sold by GLACKMKYKR A IIIL ! Uttlliunil. We learn from a friend, says the N. 0 Picayune of Thursday, to whom the sad news was this morning telegraphed, that tho widow of the lato General Quitman died on the evening of tbe 22d instw We do not hear of the naturo of her disease. + A largo conflagration occurred at New Bedford, Massachusetts, on the 24th in stant, by which several persona were se riously injured and much valuable prop erty destroyed. Many families were ruined by it anil several Captains of wha ling vessels, were rendered ponnilcss by the loss of their oil on storage. The loss is estimated at from $200,000 to $300,000 with little insurance. A Rail Road meeting and barbacuo was held at New Prospect, Greene coun ty, Alabama, on Thursday, the 18lhiust., the object of which was to extend the Marion and Cahaba Read to a connection with the N. E. and 8. W. Road, near New Prospect. It was estimated that $15,000 ,or $20,000 would be sufficient to accom plish thq work. This is one of several Reads that aro seeking lateral connections with the N. E. and S. W. llail-Road. Dr. J. C. Nott, of Mobile, is in Europe, selecting a Museum for the Medical Col lege, already in operation in that city. Thero is no reason why $500,000 should be annually expended by young men at tending Medical Schools in the North, when each State can afford all ncoessary facilities for thorough instruction in the diseases peculiar to this climate. In the establishment of Medical Colleges, Geor gia is far in advance of the Cotton States. • #—- Crops In Greene County. Ala. The Eutaw Observer, of the 20th inst., says: The prospects of the Cotton crop, so fnr as wo can learn, continues to be very promising, though there issome complaint of tbe worm. We hear that the rust has appeared upon some cotton fields south west of this. If all the bolls, squares and blooms now upon the stalks were to ma ture, peoplo could not get out one-third of it. Not True. It appears from the following, from tho New York Tribune of the 15th—in which paper the article originally appeared— that the story lately going the rouhds of tho press, to the effect that a Mrs, Brad ley, of Johnston, Ohio, had become the happy mother of eight children at a birth, was a hoax: The postmaster at Warren, Ohio, writes nt the request of Mr. Timothy Bradley, of Johnston, Ohio, to say that the story of our correspondent, announcing that Mrs. U. was the happy mother of eight children at a birth is a malicious hoax, and adds : ‘•Mr. and Mr*. Bradley are both respect able persons of respectable families—have been married about six years, and have never had any children.'’ Mortality In Boston. Boston, Aug. 25.—The mortality in Boston for the week ending Saturday last, was 02, of which five were of small pox. For the summer season thh city ims been remnrk%j>ly healthy, no conta gious disease having increased the ave rage deaths. Maryland Politic!* Baltimore, Aug. 25.—The American Convention, of tho IVth Congressional District, is again in session to night. The rowdies, so far, are held in cheok by a large police force. The friends of the Hon. 11. Winter Davis and Coleman Ycl lot, are about tied. Tbe question of con tested seats from two wards, is referred back to tho people. The Convention has adjourned till Tuesday. Wlicouhld Democratic State Con vention. Madison, Aug. 25.—The Democratic State Convention to day, nominated H. i C. Hobart, of Columot county, for Gov ernor, nnd A. S. I’aliner, for Lieutenant- Governor. It is doubtful whether the delegates to tho Charleston Convention will be elected by the present Convention, which is decidedly Anti Lecompton. From Kansas. Leavenworth, Aug. 25.—Tho express from Denver City has arrived here with two days’ later nests. The rush toward the gold diggings was incessant. Mcßae, who was arrested yesterday, for killing Clark iu 1854, was to-day dis charged, the indictment being worthless. A Negro Army in Cuba. Havana, Aug. 13.—There ore to be sixieen companies of block and colored militin in this island, one hundred and twenty-livo men in each company. The commissioned officers are to be white v*t. craus, who are to be paid four-fifths of full pay during peace, nnd full pay in time of war. The recruits arc to be ob- - laincd voluntarily, and If a sufficient nu tuber should not volunteer, thenaforeed enlistment is to he resorted to. The re cruits must ho robust, between twenty nnd thirty years of ngc, und not less tlmn five feet iu height. They are to en joy the same immunities as the white troeps, and bo subject to the same pun ishments. This would appear to be rath er a dangerous experiment in au island wherein, according to tho last official cen sus, thero weic <i4!1,22U free people of color nud negroes, and only 425,226 white inhabitants. The Spnnißh army is to be increased so one hundred thousand men. Tho correspondent of the St. Louis Democrat, writing from San Francisco, says tbe war of politicians rages with un abated fury. Broderick draws the big gest crowds, aud invokes the greatest on - thusiusni wherever ho appears. On the Bth inst., he was to speak at Sacramento, and was to reply elaborately to the charges of Gwin und Latham. It is ex pected to he the largest public meoting over held in the State, and a boat bus been chartered to take up a crowd from San Francisco. In his Weavcrvillo speech, delivered on the 30tb, he was reported os saying that W, L. Ferguson was the man who made the Federal-patronage burguin with Mr. Gwin, aud that Mr. Ferguson was murdered in cold blood to get rid of tbe testimony in tbe premises. r . Washington, Aug. 26.—Immediately on the accession of Lord John Russell to office, as Foreign Minister of England, he addressed to this Government a dispatch earnestly remonstrating against tbe re opening of tbe slave trade between the United States and Afrioa, and agamsttbe lukewarmness of Mr. Buchauaa’s Admin istration in that regard. If the dispatob is ever published it will produce a sensa tion, especially in the slave buying States.
