New AtlverUaemeuta.
Messrs. Charles Klink autl T. Mark
ham are determined to play second fiddle
to no person, town or State, in their line
of business, if we may judge from the
arrangements they have made for the en
tertainment of their friends. The bil
liard saloon is a gem of a place, uud the
eating department presents rare attrac
tions to the gastronomic propensities of
humanity, while the bar is as tempting as
oue can well be made.
The attention of Newspaper and other
publishers is called to the card of the
Rock Island Mills. Their paper, of which
we are in constant use, is a most excel
lent article, and commends itself to every
Southern man’s patronage.
Tax payers, read Jordan L. Howell’s
notice, and also read the Tax Law in an
other column.
It might be well for the owners of ne- |
groes to read the notice of Mayor Wil- j
kins, and then tell the same to their ser- I
vents.
The announcement of Mr. Fields, by .
his friends, for the ollice of Deputy Mar
shal, will bo found in the column of spo- j
cial notices. If Uen. llethune wins on
Mayor Wilkins, nobody will want to be
marshal or hold any other office in this
town.
Uiver Bride.
The steamer River Bride will leave to
day for Belvue, and intermediate landings
on the river, at 12 o’clock.
The Magazine Robbery.
From Mr. Bradford, the keeper, we
have ascertained the extent to which
those who broke into the Vowder Maga
zine carried their depredations. There
are seventy-seven quarter kegs of powder
missing, but, so far, no clue to the per
petrators of the robbery has been ob
tained.

Singular Phenomenon.
Sunday evening, at nine o’clock, we
witnessed a most singular phenomenon
in the Heavens in the East. About thirty
degrees above the horizon the sky pre
sented the appearance of the broad lurid
glare caused by a distant conflagration.
It extended parallel with the horizon,
apparently for the distance of ninety de
grees, from the East to the North. The
whole Heavens iu that direction had the
appearance of a black cloud fringe with
blood.
The superstitious doubtless construed
it as a portent of coming evil. As it
came from the East, who knows that it is
not ominous of the civil war of the sec
tions foretold by the political Cassandras!
We suspect that it finds a solution in
the peculiar state of tho atmosphere at
the time, and the refraction of the rays
of the Sun.
Juvenile Voeal Claes.
Mr. Mason commenced a second course
of exercises, with a full class, yesterday
morning. We dropped in upon him for
a few moments, and heard the children
sing a few songs, which showed they had
lost nothing by a week’s vacation; on the
contrary, their voices sounded fuller and
more bold. Mr. Mason does not teach
the children simply how to sing; he
takes up the A. B. C. of music, and we
doubt.if there can a like number of chil
dren be found anywhere South, who can
give more rondy answers upon the ele
mentary parts of this science. Mr. Mason
is doing a work in our community, for
which tho money paid him is no equiva
lent. It is a work which will live and
fruit when our heads have become gray,
and our voices are numbered among the
things that were. Parents should send
their children to Mr. Mason.
We are gratified to state that his adult
class have formed themselves into a regu
lar musical society and taken tho name
of Columbus Philharmonic Society, and
have unanimously appointed him director
of it. Our citizens have thus in prospect
a plentiful supply of wholesome music
for the coming winter.
Mill Augusta Evans.
This lady, a resident of Mobile, is now
in Now York city, superintending the
preparations for the forthcoming of anew
work, entitled “ Buelah.” The Mobile
Tribune pays the following just tribute to
the young authoress:
Miss Evans is the author of “ Inez,” a
very clever fiction, (published two or
three years ago,) which attractod marked
attention among those who read it. It
was considered in itself worthy of high
praise, but, especially, as giving promise
of a future career of literary success.
The lady, as we stated a few days ago, in
alluding to her charming story published
in the Courant, at Columbia, is hardly
out of her teens. From so young a writer,
with so brilliant a debut, we have a right
to expect a great deal.
Miss Evans is well known to many of
the social circles of Columbus, whero her
literary success will be received with un
alloyed pleasure.
Important to Tax Payers.
Mr. Jordan L. Howell the efficient Tax
*- ollector of Muscogee County, has fur
nished us with the following extract from
the new Digest of the Tax Laws of Geor
gia. It is embraced in Section 70, Arti
cle 3d, Chapter stb, of the Digest. All
interested will take notice :
“ From and after the passage of this
Act, it shall bo the duty of the Tax Col
lectors of the scvornl counties in this
State, after tho.lsth of August, in oach
year, to search out and ascertain, as far
as possiblo, all polls, professions, free
persons ot color, and all taxable property
not returned to the Receiver, or on his
digest; the Colleotor uforesaid shall enter
said default polls, professions, free per
sons of color and taxable property in a
book for that purpose, arid shall assess
and collect thereon a double tax, aud
shall pay the same into tho Treasury of
the State on their final settlement with
the Treasurer, after deducting double
commissions for tho same, and shall de
posit a copy of said book in the office of
the Comptroller General.

IJeath of Mr. William W. Oates.
Passengers on the steamer St. Johns,
says tho Savannah Nbwh, arrived there
on Saturday from Florida, bringing in
telligence of the death of Mr. Wm. W.
Oates, proprietor of the Plnnters’ Hotel,
>n St. Augustine. He had been, for many
years, a resident of Savannah. His death
was caused by a disease of tho heart.

A Good Rule.
A friend, who has hud considerable cx
perieuco in bußiuesj, remarked, not long
since, about as follows :
“I make it a rule always, when 1 am
employed by others at a salary, to uso
such industry and application to business
as will enable mo to cam every cent 1 re
ceive. In fact I wish niy employers to
get a profit upou my service, and I strive
to make it profitable to them.
“Whenever I havo hired others, I have
expected from them fair and proper ser
vices; aud have always granted them all
reasonable liberties, for tlieir pleasure and
improvement.”
The above I esteem to be a good rule,
and 1 cheerfully commend it to the reader.

The result lion beeu eo very satisfactory that I

be ns gray as I was, but who having my prejudice
without my reasons for setting it aside, aie um

which you may show to any such, and also direct
them to mo for further proof, who am in uud out

My hair is now Us natural color and much im

Prof. Wood —Dear Sir: Your llair Restorative
lias done much good in this part of the country.
My hair has been slightly diminishing for several

Hair Restorative for six weeks and I fiud that I
havo a line bead of hair now growiug, after having
used all other remedies known, to no effect. 1
think it the most valuable remedy now extant,
aud advise all who are afflicted that way to use
your remedy.
You cau publish this if you think proper.
Yours, Ac., S. W. MIDDLETON.

pint bottles of your Regulative, and now tho top
