TILE DAILY SUN. Kriilay Morning, Sepl. 16, 1850. Merchants’ Shipping Receipts. A now supply, just from tiio kinder’* baud, noatly ruled and well bound, for ealeiit tire SUN OFFICK. jjfc&“ Wanted, at the Sun Offioo, a Negro Man, to assist at the wheel of its power presses. One, who from deformity or other cause, lias not sufficient use of his legs or feet for active out-door service, will answer. New Advertisements. Mr. J. W. Sappington has for sale an excellent article of country Hour, (live him a call. We invite the attention of merchants and planters to the card of Messrs. War nock & Salisbury, which appears in the proper column this morning. We com mend these gentlemen to the patronage of the public. They are both practical business men, and will sparo no labor to subserve the interest of those intrusting business to their hands. Stockholders in the Columbus lluildiug and Loan Association, will notice the call of Mr. Moses. If any one has found a pair of specta cles, they can get a reward by returning thorn to the owner. Seo advertisement. Mrs. C. C. Moore will open a school in this city, on the Ist Monday in October next. We commend this lady to the pat ronage of the public. St. Ceoilians will see a notice to them for this evening. ilain once More. After a long interval of dry weather, with clouds of exceedingly volatile dust, we are favored again with rain, which the preceeding ‘-long dry spell” renders very refreshing. We congratulate the merchants upon the change, and sincere ly hope that the season of equinoctial j storms will pass away without resulting in injury to the planters. Balloon Ascension- Since Professors Wise and La Moun tain made their celebrated aerial voyage from St. Louis, the mania for navigating the air, is on the increase. Those fond of aerial exhibitions (and who are not ?) will have au opportunity soon to gratify their taste. Mr. Wells, as will be seen by advertisement, will make an ascension Saturday afternoon, when, of course, every body will “be there to see.” Rather Strange. Our Board of Aldermen have failed, on two successive occasions, to have a quo rum, for the transaction of the current business of the city. We know of no good reason why this should occur, when there is at least eight of the Aldermen in the city, and could be present if they de sired. The only reasonable conclusion wo can arrivo at is, that a portion of the board, who are favorable to the erection of the new Markot, do not desire that matter brought up for ratification until there is every one present, favoring the scheme. If this is the true reason, we think it a very silly course of action, to say the least of it, for it is known that six of the body aro opposed to the ratifi cation, and when the matter does come to a vote there will be a tie. The Mayor will then have the casting vote, which he will give to the opposition. Where, then, is the use of delaying business, under the vain hope that someone of the opposition can be induced to change his vote ? We | have no doubt but they have taken their 1 position after mature deliberation, and are not to be moved from U by light reason ing. Satisfy them that the necessity ex ists for anew Market, and they will go with you, but wc do not think they aro willing to expend ten to fifteen thousand dollars of the people’s money merely to gratify the pride or wishes of a few prop erty holders. The people do not want the building, and should you succeed in getting the Council to ratify the contract, you have still to submit the matter, by your own laws, to a vote of the citizens, for their ratification, and it would be hoping against hope that they would authorize you to proceed with the work. If we had Mar ket regulations, as we may possibly have, and the old Market proves too small, as it certainly will, let the Couucil appro priate the money to build another, of the same dimensions ns the present one, and locate it in the upper part of the city, for surely the persons who live up there have some conveniences to bo consulted ; they pay fully as much tax as those who live on or around “Battle-Row,” and should be entitled to as much consideration. We want Market regulations as much as uny one, and want them strictly enforced, but are not willing to pay a single cent to wards the proposed new Market or add ing to the old one, hut aro willing to pay an extra tax, if necessary, to build one of the same plan and dimensions as the pres ent, in the upper part of tbo city. We think any Alderman who absents himself from the regular meetings of the Council, merely to gain time to carry out his own personnl views, guilty of violat ing the trust reposed in him by tho voters of the city. If an Alderman is confined to his room by illness, then no blame can nttucb to him, but when they can attend to tbeir usual business, they have no good, moral or just reason for sinyiug away from the regular meetings of tho Board, even should it loobc them the cherished changes they desire to make.
