Rives, wito recently went east to purchase slaves for the South and North Alabama Hail Road Company, returned last night, bringing eiglity-Jive likely uegroos, and three more will arrive to-day. Those ne groes have been delivered to Air. Doyle, the contractor, who will pot them to work as soon as Mr. Milner can arrive from Greenville and stake off the road between this city and Wetumpka. Tho ground will certainly be broken in a few days. This is glorious news. - The Steamer Alvnrata. Wo learn from the Home Courier, that tho new steamer Alvarata, recently built near that place to run on (lie Coosa Itiver, made her first trip to Greensport and back to Home last week. iShe bad made no trial trip, but the first time site left the wharf it was with a large cargo of mer chandize. The Courier says she is a snug, trim built boat of good appear ance, 158 feet long by Eli wide, and draws nine inches water. There are now three , boats running on the Coosa River, and one on the Oostanaula. The Alvarata was built by the Coosa River Steamboat Company, and will run in connection with the Pennington. The Cotton Crop—Boll Worm. We regret to learn, says the Griflin In dependent South, as we do from many of our most reliable planters, that tlicir anti cipations of a favorable crop of cotton are lo bo disappointed. A gentleman from Merriwetbor, who wrote lo ono of our townsmen, a short time since, that he would nmlic 150 bales, uow writes that the destruction of the worm will reduce his crop to at least 100 bales, if not less- Olliers who live in that and surrounding counties say the same. In this case, we are satisfied there is no cry of “wotf,” but that tlie anticipated large crop of cot i lon will be seriously diminished by the ravages of tho worm and oilier causes, not only in this but in other States. * Opinion 111 Liverpool about Cotton. The Liverpool correspondent of tho .Sa vannah Republican, in a letter dated August 20th, thus speaks of the prospects of cotton : Political considerations have ceased to exercise the slightest infiuenco upon our market, and the question turns, as invar iably it will do, upon the probablo sup ply nnd demand for the coming four months. With such a stock as we hold hero, the Haltering accounts of your crop, and the unsatisfactory advices from India and China, 1 consider that our market keeps remarkably steady, and I should be surprised at it, wero it noT that the belief is general, that worse accounts of your crop must shortly bo received, and better accounts from tlie import markets of the east, in answer to the peace news. This, it is hoped by holders, will open tho eyes of Manchester, and make them keep up a heavy fire, until the stock reaches a mod erate compass, when prices will be entire ly governed by the course of events on your side. —- Tl.e Negotiations at Vera Cruz. The Picayune gives tho following as the heads of the treaty proposed by Mr. McLane to the Mexican Government: 1. The light of way for a rail road, through tho Northern States of the Re public, from Bomo point on the Rio Grande, to bo afterwards determined, to the port of Muzatlan, on the Pacific. 2. The right of way for a rail road, to be constructed equally by AD’cricans and American capital, front the Southern boundary of the territory of Arizona, to : the port of Guyatnas on the Gulf of Cali- I fornia. „ 3. Tho right freely to navigate tho ! waters of the Gulf of California, at tho western termini of tlieso routes, as also the free use of other ports necessary lor 1 tho entry of goods therein. I. The light to erect such warehouses us might ho necessary for tho nccommo ’ ilation of business therein, at both ter mini of these, ns also of the Tehuante pec Transit Route. . 5. The right to transport United States troops aud munitions of war over all of these routes, to or from tho Pacific, at cer tain times nnd on certain conditions. li The right, in case Mexico horself failed to do so, ourselves to give protec tion to cuclt and all these great trausit routes, in such manner as might seem to ns fit, even to the introduction of United Ktates troops, if necessary. ♦ TELEGRAPHIC ITEMS.
