ports that David P. Lock, charged with
the crime of murdering a negro boy, es
caped from the jail of that county on the

James Powell a Dutchman escaped also

tho cliurge of horse-stealing. The Sheriff
offers a reward of SIOO for their appre
hension, or fifty dollars for either.
A Criminal Court for Montgomery.
The Mail of the 22d, reports that an
effort is being made in Montgomery to
procure an act of the next Legislature,
to establish a Criminal Court in that
city, the jurisdiction of which is to be
co-extensivo with the county. The plan
is similar to the one in Mobile, and pro
poses to restrict it to the cognizanco of
misdemeanors, and to make tbe judge
cloctivo by the people, and give the office
of tho clerical duties to the Circuit
Clerk.

patty in tho next Presidential race. Tho
simple fact, that (lie Black Republicans
of tho North have approached him with
an oiler of leadership, ought to be suffi
cient to show that he is not a sound poli
tician for the South. Stephen A. Doug
las, infamous as he is, is infinitely to be
preferred. No sircc! we don’t care to
take any such pestilence as the Botts,
cither hy the natural way, or by innocu

TEDEGRAFHIC ITEMS.
Buffalo, Sept. 17.—A Convention of
self styled reformeTs has been sitting iu
this city for two days past, comprising
the leading Abolitionists, free lovers, in
fidels, fanatics, and women’s rights men
and women of the country. They havo
been assiduously searching for the
evil and its cure, while their speeches for
the most part have been disgusting and
blasphemous. The Convention closes its
session to-morrow (Sunday,) and tho
public generally will experience a feeling
of relief when tho city is rid of these re
formers.
Boston, Sept. 17—Shortly afternoon to
day a difficulty occurred between Dr J. C.
Ayer of Lowell nnd 11. S. Fay, at the of
fice of tho Middlesex Company, in Pearl
street, during which tho former stabbed
the latter in the abdomen with a pocket
knife. Ayer was arrested. Fay was con
veyed to his residence in tho caro of two
physiciuns. Ilis case is considered criti
cal. The difficulty originated at tho late
meeting of the Middlesex Mills Corpora
tion, iu which Ayer was left off as one of
tho directors. The affair caused a great
deni of excitement
St. Louis, Sept. 17—Denver city ad
vices of the Bth iußtant reached Leaven
worth yesterday. The returns from Den
ver City and Auroria of the election on
the sth give a majority of 953 against tho
State Constitution, and iu favor of tho
Territorial organization. The returns
from the mountain districts are not re
received. Large numbers of miners were
leaving tlie mountains for the valleys in
consequence of the prevalence of snow
storms.
Boston, Sept. 17—The lady killed last
night on the Worcester Rail Road, at
Natick, was Mrs. Cheesemau of this city,
aged about fifty years. Mr. Davis, who
was injured at the same time, iscxpccted
to rocovcr.
Ira ICincaid, twenty-two years old, and
a daughter of Cyrus Shaw, were drowned
ut Wiscasset, Me., on Thursday by the
upsetting of a boat.
Boston, Sept. 17.—1n consequence of
tho ecveru northeast rainstorm, tho cere
mony of inaugurating the Webster statue
took place this afternoon in Music Hall.
Addresses appropriate to the occasion
were mnde by Governor Banks, Mayor
! Lincoln and Professor Felton. The Hon.
. Edward Everett delivered the oration.

I stubbed yesterday by Dr Ayer, will prob
ably recover, provided mortification does
not supervene.

last week :
Freepost, Sept. 10.—Late frost killed
corn, and potatoes except in this vicinity.
Galena, Sept. 10.—Damage to crops in
this section very slight. Corn in the low
land only affected. Nearly all on tho up
lands untouched ; the damage is confined
principally to the leaf and stalks.
Burlington, Sept. 10—Frost has been
very light as yet in this regon; havo
board of hut few cases whero it has dam
aged crops ut all.
Dixon, Sept. 10—By the late frosts,
buck wheat was entirely destroyed, nnd
it is estimated (but the corn will full
short of half a crop, the latter suffering
most on low grounds.
With reference to the effect in Missouri,
the same paper :—The despatches which
we havo published from different parts of
the State, settle the matter that there has
been no frost to destroy the corn, tobac
co, potato or any other crop. Alt is right.
From adjoining States tho news is not ho
good, but fuvornblo weather may yet
; bring out the main crops.

on Rock Castle ltiver, in that State, of
i Uriah Gresham, a native of King William
county, Virginia. He was for many years
a member of the Kentucky Legislature,
and fought under General St. ('lair, in
1792, and was one of “Mad Anthony
Wayne’s” soldiers in 1794.
