Tho Brandon (Miss.) Republican of the 18th, says two hands on the plan tation of Wm. L>. Bibb, picked 1,005 pounds of cotton ono day lust week ; one picked 505 and the other 400. On hill land this is decidedly good picking. ♦ Pike's Peak Gold. The editor of tho Halifax Koho has been shown eomc tobacco leaves raised on tbo low grounds of Vaniater river, measuring three feet in length, nnd twenty-three inches in breadth. This was never beaten—hardly. ■■■ “ ♦ Tlio New Orleans True Delta records tho death, by suioidc, in that city on .Sunday night, of Mr. J, W. Scmmos, a native of Georgia, and a lawyer of much protniac. llis death was causod by tak ing a dose of morphine. Ho bud re ceived a diploma from the University of Louisiana, and at the time of his death was about twenty-eight years of age. No motive is assigned for the rash act. Thfc Camden (S. C.) Journal of tho 20th, says a terrible tornado passed over that country west of the Watcree rivet on tho Friday preceding, in an easterly direction, carrying before it trees, fences und housos. On tho plantation of Mr. Benjamin Perkins, several houses, includ ing the oversocr’s, barns, &o. were blown down and scattered in every direction. The destruction of crops in its wake has been immouse. Corn ready to bo gath ered has been ruiued. The last Athens ltunner corrects the statement recently made iu the Atlanta American, that lion. Anbury Hull nnd Mr. Hope Hull, of that city, had “aban doned Governor ltrown and declared for Akin.’* The Uatincr says if the Ameri can is as much mistaken in regard to the other gentlemen mentioned, as it is in regard to the Messrs. Hull, it will bo hard for tho editors to substantiate their assertion It says that there it not one word of truth in the assertion that either of these men have “abandoned Drown and declared for Akin. - - -♦ - It.v.g.i of tbe Ilog Cholera. The editor of tho Chattanooga Adver tiser, while on a recent visit to Jasper, conversed with numerous farmers of Ma rion county, und learned that tho hog cholera was making foarful ravages among the hogs of that county. A num- ber of farmers have sustained losses of from five hundred to a thousand dollars from the eff'ect of the hog epidemic. Un less n remedy can be found, Marion county will uot furnish near her usual amount of hogs for the market. The epidemic prevails in riequalchie nnd Dledsoe eountics to the same fearful ex tcut as it does in Marion county. Late Arrival. Our ears wore greeted yesterday in the afternoon, by tbe music of a fine and de lightfully toned bell—evidently a strau gor here. It proceeded from the new ono recently purchased by tho First Metho dist Church, to supply the place of the one which was fractured and rendered useless. It was swung by Mr. Barringer, weighs 1580 pounds, and is from the foundry of W. H. Holbrook, Medway, Mass. It will ring its first summons to worship next Sabbath, wc presume. May it in future years, recall many pleasant associations connected with tbe history of Columbus. ..... ■ + Prentice says it seems now to have been demonstrated that the aurora bo realis is but one of the farms of electrici ty. It is a form tnat we especially like. It is incomparably more beautiful than the lightning, and then it makes no thundering noise and it never strikes. The last number of tbe Abbeville Dan ner contains a reward of SIOO, offered by Gen. A. C. Gordon, for tbe apprehen sion of an incendiary, who set fire to bis Gin House. Fortunately, the fire was dis covered, and extinguished, before any great damage was done. New Vork Black Republican Plat form. The following resolutions were adopted by tho Black Republicans of New York, assembled in State Convention at Syra cuse tho 7th iust They are exceedingly encouraging to the lovers of peace, and jus tice to nil sections of the L’uiun. When we w nt to school, wc remember to have seen tho opinion expressed in a history of the United .States, that they seemed to he designed for one great country, instead of several smaller ones. VVs have fre quently thought since, that if the Histo rian of that day could revisit the earth, ha would reverso his opinion. Tho final dissolution of tho Union is inevitable, and ouly a work of time. It is useless to at tempt a reconciliation, it seems, of sec tions so utterly, auil irreconcilably op posed, in sympathies and interests. There is nolhingliko homogeneity between them, and it is the opinion of a large party, that they wonld flourish much better as two seperate und independent nations, with nn alliance offensive und defensive : lletolvcd, That the Republican party of the State of New York, in convention as sembled, reassert their unchangeable faith in (he truth, justice, and practicability of the principles and purposes enunciated by the National Republican Convention at Philadelphia on tho 17th of June, 1850. Jieiohtd, That freedom is uuiversal and national, und slavery exceptional and lo- cal ; and that the Government of the United .State, in tho exercise of its pow ers, whether Kxecutive or Judicial, is bound to adhere in substance und in form to the generous unil noble spirit of Ibis important maxim. lletolvcd, That tbc Territories of tbo United States are the property of the peo pie of the United States ; that the Consti tution has conferred upon Congress the power to make all needful rules and reg ulations respecting the said Territories, und that it is the right and duty of Con gress, as the guardian of their welfare, to preserve them free forever from the poli tical and social nuisances, nnd particu larly from tho infamous und debasing in stitution of domestic slavery. Resolved, That the countenance and support which have been given to the slave power by the political party which calls itself the Ltcmocrutic party, has en couraged that dangerous and aggressive oligarchy to put forth schemes for the enactment by Congress of a slave code for the Territories, nnd for the revival of the barbarous, inhuman, and detestable traf fic in African slaves, against which schemes tho Repnblican party hereby pledges itself to contend with earnest and unrelaxing energy. *. Sentence of h Sea Captain to Death. In the Circuit Court at l’ortlund, on Thursday, Judge Clitford delivered the opinion of the Court in the case of Capt. John A. Holmes, who had been convicted of Die willful murder of a seaman named George W. Chadwick, on the high seas, and whoso counsel raised objections on several points of law ns laid down at the trial. Tho opinion overruled all of the exceptions, am! denied the motion for u new trial. Ileforo sentence was passed, Captain Holmes addressed tho Court in his own defenso, in tho course of which he said: “ I most solemnly declare that I am wholly innocent nnd unconscious of hav ing committed tbc crimu of which 1 now stand convicted. I have not now, nor ever hnvo bad, any knowledge whatever of the act imputed to me; nor caul be charg ed iu any way with tho slightest responsi bility in connection with it. Qod knows I am innocent of this grent crime, nnd 1 protest before Him that 1 am not the in human monster I am represented ” Judge Ware then addressed some re marks to the prisoner, afer which Judge Clifford passed sentence upon him as fol lows : “John A. Holmes—All tho proceed ings in your case having been fully ex amined aud found to be correct, ns ap pears; of rocord, nothing; remains to be done except to say that you now stand le gally convicted of tbo murder of Georgo W. Chadwick upon tho high seas, as al leged iu this indictment, aud to prononnoe tbo final sentence of tbo law, which is as follows : It is considered by tbe Court that you be deemed, taken and adjudged to boa pirate nnd felon, and that you bo taken buck to tho place from whence you came, and there remain in close confine ment until Friday, the 25th day of Nov ember next; and ou that day, between the hours of 11 o’clock in the foreuoon and 1 o’clock in tho afternoon, you be ta ken thence to the place of execution, and that you bo thcro hanged by tbe neck un til you aro dead. And may God have mercy on yonr soul. During the remarks of Judgo Ware, and while Judge Clifford was pronouncing tho sentence, the prisoner stood tip culm and immovable. ♦ Miscellaneous. Nkw York, Sept. 20.—Ex-Senator Cooper's manifesto in favor of cheap post age and protection, and advisory of form ing nn Iron men's league to control poli ical parties through balnnce of power, gives great uneasiness to politicians. The sohooner Satillu, from Jacksonville, Fla., was boarded in tbe bay of Union Down. She bad five feet water in her hold. The crew were almost starved and too weak to work. They were taken ashore and provided for. The Captain had abandoned tbe vessel some hours previous. Arrival of the Santa Fr Mall. Inuki-kniiknck, Sept. 20.—The Santa Fe mail of tbe sth bus arrived. The shipment of gold from Yiotoria for tbe fortnight was $144,000. From Washington. Wasuinuton, Sept. 10.—The adminis tration somewhat fears trouble at Shu , Juan before General Scott arrives there, but have taken every precaution possible to prevent it. General Lamar lias left for Texas. The San Juan affair does not call for any increase in our Pacific naval force. Tho late storm seriously damaged tbe corn erops of Maryland aud Virginia. ♦ — Singular Presentiment ol Death. Among tho effects of tho late Henry D. Lane, tbo young man who was recently burned to death by the explosion of a can of camphene in the St. Louis Democrat office, was found a diary, iu which tho fol- ! lowing entry had recently been made It is certainly a most remarkable instance of presentiment of death: To whom it may concern: —Having been impressed with forebodings of the most painful nature for the last four or five weeks, aud feeling that I am about to meet with some sad misfortune or other, I tako this method to make known my wishes should anything happen which may cause my death. It is my request that someone will inform my relations by writiug to Mr. John Duckworth, 107 Spring street. New York, at the earliest posaible moment, and also please write to my mother, Mrs. Hannah 1). L. Neal, London Mills, London, N. IL, and there by render a favor to one who died in a strange land. 11. B. LANE. From the Tallapoosa Tiau s. Opelika nnd Talladega Hall Road— Its Prospects. Now I hat the survey of tiiis road is commenced, tve tuny expict to see anew vigor spring up nmoug our citizens ; those who have been sanguine heretofore will become more so; the luKewmui become zealous, und those who have viewed ihe effort to build (his read as a mere bubble tlouling ou the ocean, w ilt begin to have faith in tho enterprise. As to our opin ion, it has undergone no change since the subject was first agitated. The question with us has all the time been a mere mat ter of time. We have the meaus to build tho road if our people will only rouse up their energy, and we have a fair prospect for help from abroad; and above all, we have the route, an important route. The question now is, shall the road be built with the present effort, or will our people j wait for another troubling of the waters? Present indications answer emphatically. ! | build with the present effort. But not | withstanding all these flattering prospects , for our roail, we would remind our citi zens that delays are dangerous, and that it behooves them to be up and doing. We have l lie promise of foreign help ; but we must not expect others to build our road ; , wo must first put our shoulders to the wheel and then call for help. We will be j the principal beneficiaries, and it is but consistent that wo step forward in this important, to us, enterprise. Wo had a short interview with tho Pre sident of our road on Monday last, who had returned from Chambers court, lie | informs us ho went to Opelika and met tho Engineer and others there for the purpose of commencing the survey, and found a general enthusiasm among the people in favor of our road ; and although lie remained Ihcro but a short time, he i received subscriptions to our road to the ! amount of slff,sUo. As an evidence of the probability—we might say certainty—of otir getting help from uhroad, wo submit the following ex tract from a private letter from a respon sible and reliable firm in Columbus : “ We are pleased to see that your peo ple are turning their attention to the Rail Road from (Ipelikit to Childersburg, and most devoutly hope to see the enterprise cousumated. All that is ueccssary, is for tho citizens along the roulo to grade it and furnish the timbers necessary. The iron, and rolling stock will bo forth com ing by parties interested Last of its tcr rninous, whenever the road bed is ready to receive them. Our people say hut lit tle, but they regard it very favorable, and when tho moment comes to act effi ciently, and decisively for its completion, they will not be found wanting.” New York Dry Goods Trade. The market has been active, but rnosly at auction. The importers are forced to the auction rooms to sell their goods, and some heavy sacrifices liavo been made on i silk goods; some parcels netting not 1 above 60 per cent, of the invoice price. Prices have declined during the week. Few are the goods that have been sold at I private sale, either of British, French or German fabrics. British goods do not i find their way to the auction rooms in any | largo quantities. French shawls, meri nos, and ribbons are sold exclusively at auction, nnd none but the very best styles are firm in price. The auctioneers are doing a profitable business, and most of them discount their own paper, induce ing the importers to sell in this way, us they can immediately realizo and ! remit home proceeds. The following is a comparative statement of the Imports , 1 of Foreign Dry Goods at the port of New York, for the week and since January Ist. Mir the week. 1857. 1858. 185'J. Cotton fabrics, except prints, are very firm, l’riuts are dull—jobbers being fully suppled. Woolen goods arc steady. Fancy cassimeres are most in vogue as “desirable” goods. Detains aro in fair demand. The late demand of the season is good, but not exhaustive of the large stocks of goods which remain on hand, and which are being offered at terms moro favorable to purchasers. —lndtpen dent.
