A cor. respondent of tho New York Times, re plying to a communication upon the sub ject, makes this explanation: In the event of tho reversal of the sen tence, Bishop Onderdouk has solemnly pledged himself, in a written document in the hands of Dr. Hawks, and imme diately to take effect, to assigu to Bishop Potter tho exercise and administration of tho powers and authority appertaining to the office of Diocesan, and furthermore expressing his full purposo not to per form Episcopal functions iu tho Diocese without the consent of Bishop Potter. Tho petition referred to by “Clerus” as circulating for signatures, is in conse quence of, and based upon, a momorial drawn up by Bishop Ondcrdonk, and to be presented to the House of Bishops, in which ho acquits the Court which tried him of improper motives in his convic tion, admits the justico of his sentence, and, confessing his guilt, declares his sincere sorrow nnd repentnnee for tho same. The petition has been signed by those whose names “Clerus” mentions, and by others, in view of this memorial, and under the impression that, according to the letter aud spirit of the understand ing had with Bishop Onderdonk, lie does not purpose in any way to attempt re newing the jurisdiction of the Diocese. “ Clerus” must be under a most serious hallucination if be cuu suppose for a moment that it is contemplated to make llisliop O. “ tlio acting bead of the Dio cese.” Latent from Lake Superior—A Severe Hall Storm. The fine Detroit steamer “Bliuois” ar rived from Lako Superior yesterday nffirn ing. A correspondent writing from the Min nesota mine, under dnto of Sept. 11th, snys: “Yesterday we had a hail storm here (hat for violence has never been equaled. The hnil fell thick and heavy for about twenty minutes, some of the stones being seven inches in circumference, and weighing four ounces The Btorm then abated for a time, aud thoso who had the lights of glaBS in the windows of their houses broken, proceeded to replace them by others ; but their haste availed them nothing, fora second storm came on fiercer than the first. It lusted half an hour, and tho glass that was not demol ished by tho first storm had to suffer. One piece of ice was found that weighed a half pound. The effects of the storms were only felt within a small space, as in places one mile distant from this no hail fell. At this mino and in tho immediate neighborhood, I should think three thousand panes of gins have been broken. —Detroit Advertise), 20th. lie<|ue*t to Ulrard College. The Directors of Girard College have received information that Lawrence Tod, a citizen of Macoupcn county, Illinois, ! who died some weeks since, has devised j his estate to the institution. It appears that Tod, who was of Danish parentage, ; came to this country at an early age, and adopted ihe sea as his profession. As the captain of a packet running between ! t’hiladelpliia aud New York, he became | well acquainted with the character and J history of Stephen Girard, and seems to have carried to the West, where be went soon after, a most exalted idea of tlio disposition which Girard made of his estate. With this feeling he has devised to the college his estate, which will amount, if not impaired by litigation or accident in ifs settlement, to about $!!(),- 000. Tod was unmarried, and had no relations in this couutry, except a broth er, who, by a singular coincidence, died in a distant part of the Stntc only two days before Lawrence. —Philadelphia Led gcr. _ Lurgv Greek Contract, We learn from tho New York Journal I of Commerce that tho American Bank I Note Company of that city, has just com | pleted a contract for the National Bank i of Greece, providing that institution with notes of various denominations, engraved ; iu the highest style whtph tho art has yet attained iu any country. This is the first , contract of auy magnitude, for bank note engraving, ever executed iu this couutry for auy European Government, and, hav ing been awarded to Uuited Slates cn -1 gravers, contrary to all precedent, and ; in luce ot Ihe strong competition offered by the engravers of Europo, may very i naturally be construed as a high compli- I ment to American art.— N. The sad result attending the management of the affairs of the Erie Hail Road Com pany has disgusted the holders of our Stocks in Europe.
