THE DAILY sm Monday wfornlng, cj. 3, 1831). AdvviiUtineuU. We direct the attention ot’ the |>ublio lo Hie advertisement of Messrs. Tyler & Moses, wlio are daily receiving and open ing a very handsome assortment of fami ly and plantation supplies. The gentlemen composing the firm are attentive, and will spare no pains to please those tvho i may call on them. Mr. Barsclmll will sell his ware house ] lot cveu if he does hot get a high [n ice : for it. See advertisement, Persons in search of a fino settlement of land in a healthy and agreeable por tion of Alabama aro referred to the ail- ; vertisemeut of Casper W. Jones. Messrs. Wells, Curtis & Cos. offer a very desirable residence for sale. Our friend, 0. 1. Lloyd, who has spent several years in tlio office, announces his name as a candidate for Clerk of the Inferior Court, at the ensuing election. Tlie Saratoga House. All linnds were agreeably surprised Saturday by the reception of an elegant lunch, sent from the Saratoga House, fur which the proprietors have our sincere thanks. The “Bella Union” is no more : - it has passed into new hands and has as sumed anew name, and will hereafter be known as tho “Saratoga House.” The bar will be in charge of Islmin. who lias been known in that capacity for twenty yeans in Columbus, aud will always he supplied with liquors in abundance, and of tho best quality. There is also con nected with the establishment an catiug saloon, which will be under the superin tendence of Murdock McLeod, who has catered to the public taste in this city for fully ten years past. The whole establishment has been re painted and refitted, and is well prepared to accommodate all in search of tho wherewith to satiate the thirst, or ap pease the appetite. That Pitcher. Like some editors, brother Marlin is not addicted to the “weed,” but, fastidi ous in taste, prefers a “draught of cool water,” and has, at length, been made the fortunate recipient of an article he “has a use for,” which is nothing less than a pitcher—a silver pitcher —fine enough ‘‘to ornament any table.” We congratulate him on his good luck, and shouldn’t won der if it finally becomes the means of persuading him to keep “bachelor’s hall.” Should he do so, wo will here say, sub rosa, that he will find a use perhaps, then, for articles which it is reported he lately refused—for the accommodation of visit ing friends, of course. * American Watches. Our readers will recollect that not long ago we published an elaborate account of the American Watch Company’s Factory, at Waltham, Mass., and predicted for its products a large and euduriug success. This result has been accomplished beyond the most extravagant hopes of its mana gers, and their watches are now the trusty companions of thousands of that best class of the community with whom time is emphatically money. They have proved to be what we then insisted they couldn’t help being—the most uniformly reliable and substantial watch in the world, aud wo are iuformed that even the prejudices of foreign watch-repairers, working in this country, are gradually giving way to the irrefutable argument furnished by the steady and accurate performances of these time-keepers. In many instances, to our certain knowledge, their accuracy is, and has been, almost unparalleled, rivalling that of the best Marine Chronometers, and in all cases so exact as to accomplish all the practical purposes of a pocket time piece. More than 17,000 persons in tho United States are now wearing American watches, and the Company have not heard more than half a dozen complaints from all that number, and those arising from some accidental derangement or misusage of the works.— N. Y. Spirit of the Times. Cotton Crops. The Shrieveport (La.) Gazetteof tho 17tli says: The late showers have improved the hill-crops very much. Tho cotton is loaded with small bolls, blooms, and forms. It is believed by planters of ex perience that all the blooms to tlie loth or 20th of this mouth will mature. If we have a late full the planters on the hills may yet make an average crop. Tlie i crop on Bed Kiver will be very good pro- 1 vided the fall is dry. Tlie Philadelphia and Liverpool Steamship Line. Tho project of a line of steamers be tween l’hilttdelphia and Liverpool, recent ly inaugurated in the former city, bids fair to bo realized iu a short time. A correspondent writing on the 21st, says : i Captain Eandali is said to be making good progress in his steamship enterprise between this city and Liverpool. Ho has already about SIOO,OOO subscribed, with a fair prospect of realizing the whole amount in a very short time. The five directors of the company have subscribed §O,OOO each. +. Col. John l’restou has resigned his pro fessorship in the Law Department of the Louisville University, and is to bo succeed ed by 11. F. Simrall, Esq. Col. X’reston is one of “the executors of the lato ltob ert Wickliffe, aud as tho estutc is worth over a million of dollars, it will requiro all his time to attend to it. g WANTS. _ WANTKD, I M MEDIATELY, TWO HOYS tu wait ou tho table 1 at the PLANTERS’ lIOTISL. A five colored woman ; •‘ad been leli some property in lYnnsyl vanin, and after going there to receive it, returned to Virginia, relying on her good character to shield her from prosecution, lhe Court gave the decision that she j should he pet-miffed to remain. A cor respondent ot tho Petersburg Express ! says: It was denied that Pennsylvania was, in reality, in the category of a iiiiu slavehoUliug State (tho onus of proof being thrown upon the prosecution)) and it. was so decided, from the fact that there yet remains in the State a small number of old slaves not. embraced by the statute of emancipation. The ver dibt, 1 learn, caused considerable dissat- 1 isfaotion among some of our citizens, who ! deprecate it ns a pernicious precedent; though sympathizing with the woman on account of her industrious, harmless, and 1 thrifty habits. What a commentary upon the pseudo philanthropy of our northern neighbors ! Here is a negro who has i had ample opportunity to observe the condition of her race at tlie North, but prefers to remain among the “negro drivers” of the South, even at the coat of her hard-earned little earnings to ob tain the privilege. Our Hail Rond—The Survey* Wo learn that the Engineer of the “ Opelika, Dadevillo and Talladega Rail Road” has at length commenced an in strumental survey of the intended route. He is now in the vicinage of Dadeville, and reports tho building of the road en tirely practicable. The average cost of grading rail roads is from §3,000 to §7,000 per mile. Between this place and Opelika there are several miles, that from a correct calculation by the Chief Engineer, wc learn will barely reach §3,000 —no single mile will range over the maximum cost of grading on other roads. The average cost of grading be tween Dadeville and Opelika will only bo about §5,000 per mile—thus making the total cost of grading between the two places only §125,000. This will certain ly banish tlie fears of the doubting, who asserted that (he building of tlie road was an impossibility. —Dadeville (Ala.) Banner. <T- RELIEF IN TEN MINUTES! BRYANS’ JPULMOmC WAFERS! This is the lesult of perse vering energy in its introduction, sustained by a determination adopted at the outset, and never for an instant departed from, that its original purity 1 and excellence should continue to the end The common fate, attendant upon all such suc cessful efforts, lias overtaken tho manufacturer. Our little sou’s head for some time had beeu perfectly covered with sores, uud some called it scald head. Tho hair almost entirely came off in consequence, when a friend, seeing his sufferings, advised us to use your Restorative, we did so with little hope of success, but to our surprise, and tint of all our fiiends, a very few applications re moved the disease entirely, ami anew and luxu riant crop of hair soon started out, and wo can uow say that our boy has as healthy a scalp, and as luxuriant a crop of hair as any other child. We cau, therefore, and do hereby, recommend your Restorative, as u perfect remedy for all diseases of the scalp and hair. We are yours re spectfully, UKO. W.
