THE DAILY SUK High and Low Water Years* Iu 1812 the water #iis very high, hut the highest water ever known was in 181. r ,, ami the lowest in 1811>, 1817. 1818, 1819, 1820, 1821, ami 1822. In 18-’.'! the water was very high, hut hi recollection is that it fell in May in time to make a erop. In 1824, 182a, 182f, t ami 1827, the water was low; in 182, it was pretty high, but not high enough to Jo much Jamugo. The year 1828 was the highest wator he has ever seen—it came over the hanks in January, itnJ did not fall till June. In 1829 was the lowest he recol lects —it did nut como nearer the top of the bank than 8 feet during the whole season. In 1820 and IH3I the water was low; in 1832 it was very high, hut did no damage. In 1833, 1834, 1835, 18311, 1837, 1888, 1839, 1840, the water was low. In 1841, 1842 and 1848 we hud low water, nnd in 1844 the water was very high, and , it did net fall uutil August—Arkansas and the upper part of the State of Mis sissippi suffered very much. In 1815, 1840, 1847 and 1818 the water was low. In 1849 nnd 1850 the water was high, and did not vary two inches from the water of 1844—much damugc was done in both Louisiana nnd Mississippi. In 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, 1855, 1850 and 1857, we also had low water. While 1858 and 1859 arc high water years— nnd will, no douht, be distinctly recollected by the river planters. Judging from the past, our friend is of the opinion that we will have low water for five or six years. The forogoing exhibit siiows that in the past forty-seven years wo have had ten freshet years, or a fraction more than ono freshet year to five low water years—and it is worthy of ospecial observation, that in no recorded instance have more than two freshet years conic together in the last half century. It would seem that the river Mississippi, like the ocean, is subject to certain fixed laws, which are surprisingly uniform in their results, when we consider the vast area which it drains and the great diversity of climates through which it passes. All meteoro- ; logical observations show that theso na tural laws arc in their effects uniform, 1 oven when applied to a subject so pro i verbinlly fickle as the weather, and the amount of rain which, even in one place ! falls annually approximates a fixed amount, and doubtless if wo could ex tend our observations over many places, we should fiud that as the number of places increased wo should more m arly approximate u given averuge. I observe from tables kept at Marietta, Ohio, from 1819 to 1843 inclusive, (except the years 1824 nnd 1825, which 1 cannot find) the average amount of rain which fell then was 41:10-100 inches. 1819,311:88; 1820, 40:00; 1821, 43-00; 1822, 48:50-100; 1823, 40:10—freshet; 1820,41:00; 1827, 41:48; 1828, 40,f>0 — freshet; 1829, 1 39:62; 18;iO, :;7:o J; 18:51. 53:51—12 inches fell in July; 1832, 48:83 —10:2") inches fell in February; 1833, 40:87; i 1834, 84:36 -,0835, 48:40; 1830, 80,70; 1837, 43:80; 1838, 35 48; 1880. 33:32; 1840, 30:10; 1841, 42:82; 1842, 42:17; 1843, 41:7(1. It will be observed that in (lie freshet year, 1828, 49:50 inches of lain fell, and in 1832,48,38 Inches fell: of which 10:25 inches fell in February alone: hence tho freshet. The only year which scouis to j be entirely exceptional is 1831, when 53:64 inohes fell, of which 12 inches fell in tho month of July alone. This was evidently a mere local excess, and as all the rivers woro low at the time these ex cessive local rains did not produce any freshet in the Mississippi river. —X. 0. Bulletin.
