The Alabnmii Conference of the Meth odist Etiispocnl Church, South, will hold its next session at Eufaula, oominencitig the i!OtU of November. No Cancnt. From tho Advertiser of yesterday, wo learn that the Democratic members of tho Alabama Legislature met in the Reading Room of the Exchange Hotel, aud after I deliberating, determined, by a majority of nine voles, not to adopt the caucus system in llie election of Speaker. ♦ Seward anil Korbea. The New Vork Journal of Commerce lms learned from Eorbee’ otvn lips that he did unfold to Senator Seward last year all about Krown’s intended insurrection at Harper’s Ferry This is the key to the “irrepressible conflict” speech of Seward, and to the convenient absence of that pels n from this country. tulle a Curio.lly. The Montgomery Advertiser says : “l’erhap>s one of the greatest curiosities which can he seen at the Fair Grounds this week, will be that of a Vermont raiecd “// cow,” by the name of “Ajax,” which lius recently been brought to Georgia by the owner, Mr. W. C. Penn. His proportions are elephantine, truly, and a sight at him is well worth the price charged—twenty-five cents.” Spirit of the Soutli. From the last issue of this paper, wc learn that S. 11. Dent, Esq., will act as locum ten cns during the absence of Col. Bullock, which is required by his en gagements in tho Legislature. Mr. Dent is a gentleman of undoubted ability, and his selection was a very suitable one. During tho session of tho Legislature, Col. lUillock will contribute to the enliv ening of its columns, with au occasioual letter from the Capital. ♦ Alabama Legislature. lion. A. R. Meek, the Speaker elect, upon beiug introduced to the House, made the following address : Gentlemen of the lloutc of Representativet : For the distinguished honor you have seen fit to bestow upon mo in selecting me to preside over your deliberations, 1 return you my most sincere and heartfelt acknowledgments. To bo selected to fill the positiou to which you have so gene rously called me, is at any time an honor. Tiio people of tho Etate have selected as their representatives men distinguished for higii abilities, undoubted patriotism, and lovo for our institution?, beyond probably auy representative body that lias heretofore assembled in this Ilall, and to he selected to fill the position by such a body, I feel to boa very high and unmerited honor. I feel the responsi bility devolving upon me, and have a full consciousness of my inability to discharge fully tbo duties appertaining to me us your presiding officer. I cordially rely, however, on your generosity, gentlemen, in the fulfilment of the duties required of me. Iu the present condition of our State affairs, measures of the utmost impor tance will come before you, requiring careful deliberation and your serious at tention. These measures cannot be pro perly attended to, uuless strict order is maintained in your deliberations. Give me your aid, then, iu maintaining this order, so (hat wo may all properly dis charge our duties and benefit the State. It is by order that the grandest and great est events go on. I remember to have been present when that question atfecting the interests of so large a portion of mankind was decided in tho Supremo Court of the United States. I refer to what is known as the Ilred Scott decision, anil I could not but admire the simplicity, and yet the great dignity that distinguished the Court in that event —tho grandeur with which the decision was given. There sat the vener able Chief Justice, Roger 11. Tauey, like sumo old prophet lingering on the verge of the other world, enunciating princi ples of the greatest importance to tho people of this Union ; aud, whenever the slightest disturbance interrupted his pro ceeding. lio raised a simple pencil, the murmur was hushed, and thus the great movement went on. It wag a scene worthy of contemplation. In like man ner, 1 hope order will be preserved in this House, aud that by the expedition of business, the best interests of the State will be duly attended to. Thanking yon, gentlemen, again for the great honor you have conferred ou me, 1 will, in conclusion, request the honorable member from Dallas county to administer the usual oath. - f.tsr from Texas.
