Lord Brougham and Slavery in Georgia llev. C. W. Howard, one of the editors of the Southern Cultivator, soys: Our attention has been called to a par agraph which lias appeared in a number ot newspapers in which Lord Brougham is represented as saying, in substance, that slavery was forced upon Georgia, while a colony, by tho mother couuuy. Mis Lordship is in error, and the error is one which in the present state of public opinion as to slavery at tbe South may do harm. We are perfectly familiar with the whole facts of the case, having examined the original documents relating to it, in the State Paper Office in London. Slavery was prohibited in Georgia, at its settlement, by the Trustees The grounds of its prohibition, ns stated by tbe Trustees, were prudential—not moral. General Oglethorpe, himself, owned a plantation us negroes iu South Carolina, at the time lie was at the head of affairs iu Georgia. One of the motives in the settlement of Georgia, was to esinblish a strong force in a favorable position to check the advance of the Spaniards from F'orida. Another was to give a home and employment to numbers of white per sons iu F.ugluii I and on tbe Continent, who were the victims of misfortune.— Another was to introduce the growth of -ilk and wine, h. th of which were sup pond to require a degree of intelligence not attainable by negroes. The introduc lion of slaves was deemed incompatible witli the ends proposed by the founders of Georgia Tho colonists very soon ascertained that ibis prohibition was fatal to them. , Carolina tlourishcd—Georgia languished. I For years the colonists petitioned to be : allowed negroes. Instead ot increasing ! in numbers, Georgia in 1740 was reduced I in one-sixth of its former population.— The persons most influential in inducing the Trustees at la.-t to allow the iutroduo of negroes, was the celebrated George | tVhitefield. Wo present an extract Iroin ’ one of his letters, as a pleas ml theme of ; meditation to the abolitionists. “God is ; delivering me out of my embarrassments by degrees. With the collections made at Charleston, 1 have purchased a planta tion mid some slaves, which 1 intend to devote to the use of Rethesda.” (tho Or- I plimi House ) The Highlanders at Darien, and the Moravians at Kbcnezer were averse to the introduction of slaves—they constitu ted hut a small proportion of the popula tion—the rest were mo-t eager to Cos ul i lowed their use. After yours of petition, 1 in the year of 1740, the law agaiust the introduction of slaves was repealed. Tho etb et of this repeal was magical.— All the interests of the colony pri spore I, and lie advances was repaid beyond com parison The introduction of negroes intoUeorgia, instead of being a compulsory measure, of Kngluml, was an act of necessity, sug gested liy the painful experience of the colonists White labor had been tried and foun 1 to be practically useless in the climate of our sea const.’ Tho African ul tic was found capable of enduring our almost African sun. This chapter of Georgia history contains a pregnant les son of instruction. It teaches the nbso lttlc necessity to us of the institution of slavery, and the insane folly of those who would disturb it. 11. Ur.
