Ki tv Advertisements- If you wish I o seen to a thousand mid one” home amusements send to Dick and Fitzgerald, New York. Qunhy & Cos., have for sule a fine lot of fish and fish roe, alum salt and St. Louis flour. Any one wishing to procure a comforta ble room and board can be accommodated at Mrs. Ivirviu's. See advertisement. We are requested to announce that Mr. J. Barney Hicks is no longer a candidate for Tax Collector of Muscogee county. The steamer Marianna left tho wharf yesterday about 111 o’clock for Apalachi cola, with a good lot of passengers, cot ton and miscellaneous freight, ihe river is low, but in good boating order, and with present prospects bids fair to con tinue so for some time to come. What Next I We arc growing weary for some whole some and refined amusements during these long winter evenings. The Theater has come and gone and wo are not advis ed whether we shall have it in our midst again or not. Our people as a general thing are pas sionately fond of music, but that has been a scarce commodity so far, in this season and it is very doubtful whether we shall have the Opera or not, especially the En glish Durand Company who so charmed our people last Spring. Can nothing he done for us? What has become of the St. Ccciliaus? We thought at one time they would give us frequent cause to thank thorn for a style of entertainment far übovo the common alities, which so much infest our city. We trust we shall soon have the pleasure of listening to them in an entire now programme of sacred songs; if, however, they cannot give all new, let us have a concert mixed, a little old and ns much new as possible. What say Mr. Presi dent Hodges and Mr. Conductor VanJen burg. Handsome Packages. We noticed yesterday afternoon, at the Manchester Warehouse, a lot of cotton, part of the crop of Messrs. A. & J. Gnm incl, put up in handsome style. Unlike the generality of planters, they cover the cotton, and leave no ends or sides open for cows or other depredators to filch from the bales. Why is it that planters do not cover their cotton ? Another thing attracted our attention, the bales were of medium size, easy to handle, and free from being torn to tatters by the hook Planters should adopt a style of neat ness in putting up their cotton, as well as to strive for large and ragged bales. Shot Himself. On Christmas day, about noon, a man by the name of Augustus Jones, who, we learn, lives sometimes in this city and sometimes in Opelika, accidentally shot himself with a shot gun, inflicting a wound which is regarded as very danger ous. We understand that ho was beating or thumping on the ground with the butt of the gun. the muzzle being held in his hand, when the concussion discharged it, the contents entering his body. He was at the time considered to be very badly hurt, bu*. we have not since heard of his condition.— Enquirer, 28th. ~'♦ * Fire on the Georgia Rail Road. About 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, a pile of wood on the Georgia Rail ltoad, about sixteen miles from this city, caught fire from the sparks of a locomotive at tached to a freight train. Some two hundred cords of wood were consumed and about fifty yards of the track de stroyed. The freight and passenger trains, both up and down, were detained some time in consequence.— Const. , 28/A. x ♦- SPECIAL NOTICES. Bryan’s Tasteless Vermifuge. THE MOTHER’S HOPE.
