R. A. WARE A BUN, Dec.,. N0.74 Broad street. VOLUME V.} FULL LENGTH WMHIN6TOKIEVEIIETT, INCLUDING A VIEW OF MT. VERNON, In the Engraving of Washington. These splendid engravings are from original paintings by Hicks, and are engraved on steel in the highest style of Art. They are each 25x35 inches, each contain ing six square feet. So many coarse, miserable pictures have been palmed upon the public as works of art—and especially in cheap, black and muddy engravings—that it is difficult to convince persons of taste that they are safe in ordering what they have not first seen. We have paid the first artists their own prices, amounting to many Thousand Dollars, to produce engravings really beautiful , as well as the best portraits , and that shall be splendid ornaments to any parlor. OPINIONS THAT CAN BE RELIED ON. The Eiliter of tho New York Observer says: “These engravings are genuine works of art—the likenesses are admirable. The portrait of Mr. Everett wiil tuke precedence of all others.” The Now York Christian Advocate says : “They are among the finest engravings that we have ever seen, and THE PUBLISHERS ARE FULLY RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THEY PROMISE.” TERMS, ALMOST GRATIS. We will send, post paid, securely packed in rol lers, either engraving aud a $3 Magazine, one year, for $3; both engravings and a $3 Magazine, one year, for $4. By special arrangement, the entire year's sub scription ti the Magazines is paid over by us to their publishers, and subscribers receive their supply for the year direct from their respective publication offices. The cost of the engravings is paid only by the difference between the lowest wholesale aud tho regular price of the Magazines. Engravings sent at once, and subscriptions to periodicals commence with current issue, unless otherwise ordered. Money at our risk, if proof is retained of having been mailed. DAXjY’S VALLEY IN this ago of adulterated and deleterious Li quors, ii is a source of satisfaction to be üble to introduce to public notice the above article—an article of unquestioned purity, and possessing no qualities except such uh have the most favoi&blo | influence on the human constitution. A few roils of soil on the hanks of the Rhine j produces the grape which will flourish uowhero j else, from whose juice proceeds the “Joh&nnis i berg,” the choicest wine in the world. A few acres of land in Cuba produces a tobacco, the Davor aud quality of which, w hen msnufac , tured into cigars, ate incomparably superior to I that ot any other soil. Ami a narrow strip of land in the parish of ; Natchitochee, in Louisiana, has long supplied tho j world with a super-excellent article of suull.from I such tobacco as cannot be iuduced to grow else where. In like inatmor it has long been known that a limited territory, lying in the valley (f the Mo nongahela river, exclusively brings forth a rye of properties so marked aud peculiar that its distilla tion produces a Whisky of such superlative char acter as places it beyond rivalry. By a process recently discovered, and now kuown only to my manufacturer, the grain from the choicest spot of this favored locality is made to yield the Aromatic Valley Whisky, with which no other can stand an instant's com parison. 1 have no apprehension of being accused of pub lishing unwarrantable, or even exaggerated enco miums, to any who will lirst subject my Whisky to test. It is now tho standard article at all the first class Hotels anil Clubs in the city of Now York, and wherever it is introduced it ut once assumes its leading position, is AWARDED THE BALM OF SUPERIORITY, and the demand for it becomes a thing established. Its medicinal properties are such, that while its immediate effects are pleasant and grateful, it ex ercises the happiest permanent influence upou the constitution. 1 have analyzed a sample of ‘‘Daly’s Aromatic Valley Whisky,” and find it to be a pure article , of fine flavor, and without any doleteiious admix ture. McMurray, Esq., for several mouths it’s principal editor, and a ready aud graceful writer. His successor is John A. Foster, Esq., who makes a very handsome bow to the public. Mr. Foster is an excellent and well educated gentleman, and will make the Banner entirely acceptable to the sound and chivalric people among whom it circulates. Rain, Enow and Cold Wealhrr. The Cassvillo Standard says: “On last Thursday morning the windows of heaven were opened, and tho rain descended and the flood came. Ou Fridoy the Etowah river was swelled beyond her banks, the creeks were backod until many of the low grounds were completely submerged, and in some instances the corn aad cotton had not been gathered ; bridges, fences, and crosswnvs were drifted down the liquid current. Saturday morning, day light, old earth was robed in spotless white, nnd the snow fell to the depth of five or six inches. The surrounding hills and mountains havo presented up to tho present writing, quite a lovely and im posing sight.” ♦ ■■■ Picked up Adrift. Cpt. Arnold, of the tern E. C. Fclter, reports: Deo. 20, 1859—Picked up, in New York Bay, a trunk belonging to the Merchants’ Express Company, which, by appearance, had been stolen and robbed, as there was attached to tho trunk a lock in good or der, and clasped together with a staple. The staple had been apparently pried oil’ by force. The ranker of the look is H. C. Jones, Newark, N. J. Within the trunk were railroad checks, marked via Central Rail Road, Augusta, 1857, No. 2171, No. 2949. The lock and checks can be seen on board the tern E. C. Fetter, Captain Arnold, at Adger’s South Wharf, in this city. The attention of Express men in this State and Georgia is called to the above, as a strip within the trunk was supplied with hooks, over which was marked “At lanta,” “Albany,” “Columbia,” “Mont gomery,” “Macon” and “Augusta.”— Capt. Arnold will bo happy to accommo date such persons as care to inspect these articles at his vessel, bow in this port.— Charleston Mercury, Ist. * Anecdote of Lamar. A friend, who knew the late Mirabeau B. Lamar, well, in other days, in a pri vate letter to the senior editor of the Mail, speaks as follows: “Well, Mirabeau B. Lamar is dead! 110 unde the first polilical speech I ever heard, and said: ‘By Heaven! I had rather see Georgia an iceberg—leafless and lifeless—floating in the frozen sea, than to see her submit to Federal exac tion. Nay, sir, 1 had rather see her sink into a lake of fire, seven times hotter than man’s conception!’ “Whenliehada fever, twenty years ago, Colquitt went to see him, and he lay scorching up, and raving to die. ‘Any body can die,’ he said, ‘ but me. Any body else would die, with this fever; but here am 1, and I shall not die, but suffer on, and live!’ But he is dead!—a brave mail, and a poet. But be was not happy, and we tremble to lift the veil that bides his eternal future.”— Mail. Stamped Paper and Knvelope* Com* Dined. This new patent is now in the bands of the l’ost Office Department, with a view to examine into its merits and practica bility. It consists of u sheet of paper of any size, the outside hulf sheet being shaped tike the flap of an euvelope, and when folded has the appearance of the ordinary envelope. The Uhited States postage stamp is imprinted on the right hand comer. It frequently happens that iu the hurry of business the usual envel ope is torn off and thrown away, when, if the correspondent fails to postmark it on the inside, great inconvenience is experi enced. This new style is especially adapted to the convenience of business men generally.— Constitution. ‘l'lie Urtwlli of the United lUUi.
