These tplendid engravings are from original paintings by Illcks, and are engraved ou steel iu th highest sty le of Art. They arc each 26x35 inches, each contain ing six square feet. So many coarse, miserable pictures have been j aimed upon the public as works of art—and especially in cheap, black and muddy engravings—that it is difficult to convince persons of taste that they are safe in ordering what they have uot first seen. We have paid the first artists their own prices, amounting to many Thousand Dollars, to produce engravings really beautiful , as well as the best portraits , and that shall be splendid ornaments to any parlor. OPINIONS THAT CAN liE RELIED ON. The Editor of the Now York Observer says: “These eugraviugs are genuine works of art—the likenesses are admirable. The portrait of Mr. Everett wiil take precedence of all others.” The New York Christian Advocate says: “They are among the finest engravings that wo have ever soon, and TIIE PUBLISHERS ARE FULLY RE.‘PONS*I BLE FOR ALL THEY PROMISE.” TERMS, ALMOST GRATIS. IN’ this age of adulterated aud deleterious Li quors, it is a source of satisfaction to be ablo to introduce to public notice the above article—an article of unquestioned purity, and possessing no qualitios except such as have the most favoiablo inllueuco on the human constitution. A few rods of soil on tho hunks of the Khiue produces the grape which will flourish nowhero else, from whoso juice proceeds the “Johuuuia berg.” the choicest wiue iu the world. A tow acres of laud in Cuba produces a tobacco, the flavor uud quality of which, when manufac tured into cigars, aio incomparably superior to that of any other soil. Aud a narrow strip of laud in the parish of Nutchitochee, iu Louisiana, has long supplied the world with a super-excellent article of snuff, from such tobacco as cannot be iuduced to grow else where. In like manner it has long been known that a limited territory, lying in the valley cf the Mo nongahcla river, exclusively brings forth a rye of properties so marked ami peculiar that its distilla tion produces a Whisky of such superlative char acter as places it beyond rivalry. By a process recently discovered, aud uow known only to my manufaeturer, the grain from the choicest spot of this favored locality is made to yield tho Aromatic Valley Whisky, with which no other can stauil an iustunt's com parison. 1 have no apprehension of being accused of pub lishing unwarrantable, or even exaggerated enco miums, to any who will firm subject my Whisky to test. 9 It is uow the standard urticle at all the first class Hotels uud Clubs iu tho city of New York, aud wherever it is introduced it at once assumes its leading position, is AWARDED THE PALM OF SUPERIORITY, and the demand for it becomes a thing established. Its medicinal properties are such, that while its immediate effects are pleasant and grateful, it ex ercises the happiest permanent influence upon the constitution. I have analyzed a sample of “Daly’s Aromatic Valley Whisky,” and find it to lea purearticle, of fine flavor, and without any deleteiious admix ture. JAMES B. CHILTON, M. D , Chemist. TO TIIK MERCHANTS OF TUB South and South-West WK, the undersigned, importers aud Jobbers iu tho City of Charleston, in view of the present excited state of tho country, deem it pro per to bring to the uotico of the interior Mer chants the claims w have to their patronage and custom. The majority of us have been long estab lished in business, and from our experience are well acquainted with the wants of this section of country. All of uh hold sentiments in common ou the agitating question of the day—slavery; aud all of uh desire, as far as practicable, to be come commercially independent of the North. We have no desire to underrate the energy and enterprise of the Merchants of Northern cities, but we claim to be able to supply goods in our re spective lines on as favorable terms, both as to price aud credit, as the merchants of any city in the Union. We have facilities for obtaining goods from Europe not surpassed by any, and our im portations from abroad are very large, notwith standing thereports to the contrary, circulated by those who have no knowledge of what they affirm, or whose interest prompts them to mislead American goods wo obtain from the manufac turers on as iavoralde terms as any Jobbing Mer chants of the Northern cities. Why then should we not bo able to sell ou as favorable terms as others? We are able und determined to do so, and all we Mk of you is, tc try this market; iy HHidethe prejudice—for it is only a prejudice—that your customers prefer goods from Now York to those from Charleston, aud build up and encourage your own Seaports and your own Merchants. If we cannot do what wo profess, you will be sub jected to very little inconvenience, for opportu nities of leaving by railway or steamer are offerod every twelve hours. Our Stocks will bo complete by tho Ist of Feb ruary next, and it remains to l>e seen how many of those who have heretofore purchased nil their goods iu Northern cities will give Charleston a trial this Spring. Homicide. Tho Atlanta Confederacy says on Mon day, near Palmetto, Coweta county, I.uke Saunders was fatally slabbed by a man of tbe name of Tboinas, we understand. ■Saunders lived about two lours after the Wound was inflicted. He was stabbed in the abdomen with a bowie knife. The difficulty occurred at the election precinat alow hundred yards fiom Palmetto, in Coweta county, and originated in a tight between a Mr. Penn und some other party, when Saunders interfered to sepa rate the parties, and then received tbe fatal wound. ♦ KIhIIhIIcv of IK.IO. The newspaper statistics of 1809 are being published. During the year 20 persons died who were over 100 years of age, tho oldest of whom was Csesnr, a negro of Louisana, who was over 138 years of age. The total loas|by fire during 1859, was $22,000,000, being six million more than for the year 1858. The rail road accidents last year were 79 in number, killing 129 persons and wounding 411. The number killed being only a little more than half of that in ’59. There wero 21 steamboat accidents, kill ing 242 persons and wounding 140. - AstoiHilling Ignorance. The Douut journals relate an extraor dinary instance of ignorance in a village near that town. A physician colled a few days ago to prescribe for a sick child of a peasuul woman, and ordered a warm bath. “What is a bath ? said she. “Heat some water in your pot on the fire and put your child into it.” A few minutes after a neighbor entered, and found that the womun Imd put the child into the pot with the water, and had placed the little creature on the tire, which Bbe was dili gently stiring up • Os course the visiting neighbor rescued the child from the hor rible fate with which it was threatened. Benedicts on a Lnrk-Hoiv liny “Fooled the Women.” One day last week a party of married gentlemen, numbering some sixteen per sons, arranged to have a sleigh ride, a supper and a “good time” generally. The supper was to bo Waldron’s, about five miles from Mount Pleasant, Ohio, the parties being all residents of the luttcr place. They managed, as they supposed, to keep their wives ignorant of their plans, hut the womai were not as igno rant of their movements as they had sup posed. Accordingly, when the “stag party” were nearly ready, with koon up petites sharpened by the ride, to sit down to tho sumptuous supper provided, the ladies, who had managed to nrrive just iu lime, walked in and sealed themselves at the table, utterly refusing to recognize their “smart husbands,” und treating them as entire strangers. In this way they appropriated to themselves every thing upon the table. After supper, the ladies, who hud brought music with them, danced for u while, and then returned homo without onco speaking to their husbands, and treating ail udvuuces on their part with coldness. Triumph of the Steam Fire Engine. The York llernld says that a tire took place iu Fulton Direct, in that city, on Thursday lust, which destroyed proper ty to tho nmount of half a million of dol lars, and but for the operation of the steam fire engines, the fire would proba bly have equalled the great contiugration of 18.15, when twenty millions worth of property was destroyed. The result of this tire has removed the prejudices of the old firemen of New Y'ork, and they now admit the vast superiority of tbo steam engine over every other engine yet constructed for tho extinguishing of tiros. In the intensity of cold weather the difference is said to be still more strik ing, and it was owing to tlie accident of the excessive cold at the late fire that the firemen generally became convinced of the merits of the steam engine. It is stated that in London, Cincinnati and Philadelphia, two horses are always in harness, reudy to he hitched in an instant to the engine. Only two men, says the Herald, are absolutely necessary to bring it to the field of operations—the engineer and a man to drive the horses, ridjng on tho back of one of them. The cost is considerable, ($4,600 for each engine,) hut the gain from their superior efficien cy more than warrants the cost, und the number required, even in a city like New York, is comparatively small.— Richmond Ditpatch. It is said that “red is all the rage” with the ladies of Buffalo, N. Y., this winter. They are wearing red-heeled shoes, red stockings and red petticoats.
