VERNON, In the Engraving of Washington The se splendid engravings are from original paintings by Hicks, and are engraved ou steel in the highest style of Art. They are each 26x35 inches, each contain ing six square feet. So many coarse, miserable pictures have been palmed upon tbe public as works of art—and especially in cheap, black and muddy engravings—that it is difficult to convince persona of taste that they are safe in ordering what they have uot first seen. We have paid the first artists their own prices, amounting to mauy Thousand Dollars, to produce engravings really beautiful, as well as the best portraits, and that shall be splendid ornaments to any parlor. OPINIONS THAT CAN BE RELIED ON. The Editer of the Now York Observer says: “These engravings are genuine works of art—the likenesses are admirable. The portrait of Mr. Everett wiil take precedence of all others.” The Now York Christian Advocate says: “They are among the finest engravings that we have evr seen, and THE PUBLISHERS ARE FULLY RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THEY PROMISE.” terms, almost gratis. Wo will send, post paid, securely packed in tel lers, either engraving and a $3 Magazine, one year, for $3; both engravings and a $3 Magaziue, one year, for $4. By special arrangement, the entire year's sub scription ti the Magazines is paid over by us to their publishers, and subscribers receive their supply for tho year direct from their respective publication offices. The cost of the engravings is paid only by tho difference between tho lowest wholesale and the regular price of the Magazines. The following instance of womanly he roism is recorded as having occurred at the late disaster at Lawrence, Mass. : “ At one point when a rope had been fixed to a projecting timber, a cull was made to the crowd to tuke hold aud pull with a will, but for a few miuutes, such was tlie danger of the attempt—for the beam in falling might engulph all near it —fora few minutes, we say, the call was unheeded. Men shuddered and drew hack—they would risk much to aid those below, but life was sweet and the danger greul. At this critical juncture, a woman rushed from among the crowd, and dar ing the spectators to follow, seized the rope uud attempted to mount the pile of smouldering ruius to clear away with her hands. The exuinplo was enough ; not a word was said, but strong hands at once drew her hack, and then there were no lack of hands to the rope, the beam was drawn out, and at least two sufferers re leased from the opening thus made. Besides those thus saved, u large num ber of operatives, mostly males, who were iu the weaving room, which is in the lower story, managed to escape by crawl ing up from that room through a couple of low windows which were not obstruc ted. The weaving roam was partially saved by a heavy etono floor of the story above, and many in this department were thus saved. Isneela. Yfv notice that Hell's Life in London nnd the Sporting Life, under (heir calen dar of “Fightn to Come,” both enter lleenan under the title of the Ueneoia Hoy. That sobriquet if, therefore, fix ed, and the lGtlx April will decide wheth er it will stand forever on tho roll of fame among the names of the fistic cham pions of Kugland. Uenecia is the name of a town in California where Hoeuau worked, and revoived its title in honor of a beautiful girl, tho daughter of Gen. Vallejo, who lies buried upon itstopmoat bill. What a contrast to her gentle spirit will be the fierce scene enacted near Lon don, between Ifecnan and Tom Hsyers, o ntho 10th April!—Fitta Spirit.
