The Houston, Texas, papers publish a detailed statement of Hie losses by the late fire iu that city. Among (he accompaniments of the shock of the Earthquake we have to re cord one not the least surprising of the subterrunenn phenomena by which it may have been attended. The tubing of the Artesian well has been prosecuted uutil the depth hnd been reached of 810 feet ou tho 31st of March last, when it was arrested by an obstruction which it was impossible to penetrate or to remove by pressure, the boring having previous ly reached 930 feet. Tho weights placed on the tubing amounted to several hun dred tons without any perceptible effect, when on Thursday afternoon it began to settle, and it entirely disappeared, so that tho materials employed in tho ope ration rested ou tho ground; or removing the rubbish it was found that the tubing had descended thirty l'cct. What con nection, if any, there is between this fact amt the shock of the earthquake, science may or may not solve it.— •V/iaa. \cws. A Cobrit. An iustanco of intrepidity is related by The llombay Times. It appears that while a parly of fifty persona of tho Jew ish community were engaged in conver sation, previous to prayer, Mr. lteubon unwittingly roused from its repose a largo cobra di capello, which at onco pounced upon the -disturber. Eluding its grasp, the young man caught the cobra in the middle of its body, but it darted oil’ with a violent jerk, and again turned upon its assailant. Mr. ltcuben, however, held the cobra a second time in his hand, and giving it n swing in the air, struck its head against tho ground soveral times, and killed tho dangerous reptile, much to tho admiration of tho Jewish gentlemen present on the spot. Pryor on Bennett. In the House of Representatives the 120th, Mr. Pryor alluding to an attack upon him from the New York Herald said: Mr. Clerk, 1 am reluetant to solicit tho attention of the House, oven for a mo ment, on a matter of personal privilege; but the disagreeable duty is imposed up on me by an article in the latest issue of the New York Herald. I wish to protest at once, however, that I own no obliga tion to lOopouu to anything that issues from tho pen or the inspiration of James Gordon Bennett. I should disparage the dignity of my position, and affront the feelings of bonorublo members, if I were to admit the propriety or the necessity of recognizing any utterance from that no torious individual—a man who is conspic uous by tho persistent and flagrant vio lation of all tho rights and virtuous in stincts of humanity ; who has supplied himself with money and tho means of a pernicious influence by extorting contri butions from the fears of innocence, and levying subsidies upon the gratitude of sympathetic andjeonfederate villainy ; a wretch w ho bears upon his bnck the scars of many a merited chastisement, and upon his soul tho taint of every conceivable abomination ; a miscreant who, in con senting to the dishonor of his own family and the profanation of the most sacred relation of life, has committed a crime for which no languago furnishes a commen surate term of scorn and detestation ; a foul and filthy creature, whose name is the execration of both continents, and from whose contact truth and virtue shrink ns from the touch of leprosy; a fiend who, denied tjie privileges of human fel lowship and exiled from the courtesies nnd charities of the social circle, is con demned to wear out the small remnant of a guilty and miserable existence in nsoli tudo for which the wages of a prostitute press can purchase no relief and no con solation. I repeat to the House, that I would not obtrudo upon their presence the image of an individual whose unutter able and unapproachable infamy distin guishes and stigmatizes him as the shame and tho opprobrium of humanity. Hut in candor, Mr. Clerk, I will not deny that ho has some pretext or apology for liis attack on me, since, in the dis charge of my duty as a journalist, I had frequent occasion to lash him until even his rhinoceros hide quivered with the pongs of excoriated sensibility. Let him continue his assaults. No gentleman can desire a more significant and satisfactory compliment than tb.e abuse of James Gor don Bennett. His applause is an argu ment of suspicion ; his invective is a title of honor. Notice to Passengers! FLORIDA, 718 tons burthen, O. O.
