The Augusta Chronicle of yesterday is informed that a ease of small-pox has made its appearance iu the town of Daw son, Terrell county, cautlug considerable apprehension among the citizens. Wraltlk of itluaicogcc! County. A correspondent of tho Eufnula Ex press over the signalnre of “Cowikes,” h iving seen a synopsis of the tax returns of Muscogee county, including tho city of Columbus, in which the valuation of all property is set down at $12,603,081, was prompted to ascertain how Harbour county and Kufaula stood in point of wealth. Three hems of land, negroes and town lots, amount in the aggregate to $12,429,011. He says, “to my astonishment, 1 found that threo items alone, land, negroes and town lots, even at an estimate much lower than would be placed on them now, (for tho negroes of this county would average moro than I have set them down by nt least 20 per cent., and town lots iu Eu faula have increased in value more than 50 pcrccut.) exceeds the entire wealth of Muscogee county, including so large arid populous h city as Columbus.” Gut of about fifty-three counties in Al abama, Harbour ranks, we believe, sec ond or third in respect to the valuation o 1 taxable property. She may well chal lenge comparison in this particular as well as all others, with any courtly in the South, but the correspondent of the Ex press should remember that the nica of Muscogee county is comparatively little larger in extent than the corporate lim its of tho city of Colurnhus. The coun ties in Alabama aro extraordinarily large —so large that Grand Juries at several of tho last Cull Terms of tho Circuit Court presented it as a public grievance, and recommended a reduction of their size, or a la-organization of the Judicial Cir cuits to remedy the evil. In Georgia the counties are about the “size of a saddle blanket,” of which Muscogee is a fair specimen. Without any desire to insti tute invidious comparisons, wc would say that when an estimate is made between the comparative wealth of counties, due allowance should at the same time be made for their comparative size. illiwmlmml|>pl Moving.
