COLTJMBUS: ] Largest City and Country Circulation. Satui'ilay Morning, Morcli 10, 1800. We lay before our reiulers to-<lay, Hie cborler of the Opelika aud Talladega ltail Hoad Company, obtained at tho late see- : sion of the Legislature of Alabama. Thin it an enterprise in which oar city has : much interest. Head and lay it carefully away. • ♦ Self Destruction. We learn from the Selma Sentinel that a man named Crane, a furniture dealer in Cahawba, Ala., hung himself in that town on Monday morning last. He leaves a large family. The cause of the rash act is unknown. —— ♦ - Senator Hunter an While l.alior Here is u word just spoken hy Senator Hunter in the Senate : “Nor is it (ruo that the institulion of slavery makes manual lubor on the part of tiie whites despicable in the slavehold ing Slates. There is no country on earth in which honest labor, as I beliovc, more respected ; and of Ibis 1 am certain, that every white laborer in tho elavehol ding States is more nearly on an equality with every other man in the community thanfevery white laborer in llie North is on terms of equality with every other man in the North.” Winter Davl, In Nor Hi Carolina. In the Opposition Convention ut Hal cigh, which closed its session on the fflid ull., after approving the nomination of W. A. Grnhnin, of North Carolina, for president, and Washington Hunt, of New I ork, for vioo President, pending one of the resolutions. Mr. Raynor offered an amendment sus taining alt the Southern Opposition mem bers now in Congress in the position they now occupy before their country. The amendment was opposed on the ground that their resolutions included Henry Winter Davis, of Maryland. Here a very warm debate sprung up, itt which Mr. Smith, of Halifax, Rogers, Manly and Symc, of Wake, took issue with Mr. linyner, who refused to change his amendment so ns uot to include Davis, of Maryland, hut who made a speech, paying a glowing tribute to his abilities and purity as a politician. This speech created considerable dis satisfaction, and the debate continued in a high state of ferment for soino time.— The amendment was then noted on, which was almost unanimously voted down, and the original resolution, us offered by Mr. Smith, of Halifax, was then passed unani mously. ♦ Extract from William I*. Wright & Co.’s Circular, dated New York, March 0, and sent out per steamship Kuropa: Tito continued heavy receipts at the ports give currency to estimates exceeding 4,800,000 bales. The President read quite an ciicourag iug letter from Mobile, regarding the prospect of the Road and Dank, which we hope will be realized. The enterprise is now fairly afloat, aud all hands must come to tho rescue Wo understand there has been some $1(10 to $175,000 already subscribed hy individuals; this should be increased to at least $850,000 atouce, iu this section of the State, with out dittioulty, and then if tho city ol Montgomery shall take $150,000 more, it will put the Dank attachment beyond contingency, and ultimately secure the completion of tho Road. Bissell, of Illinois, has been de tected in very dishonest uso of his official station, to euable a fugitive slave to elude urrest. The circumstances are remarka ble, and show the most deliberate pur pose to prevtDt Hie return of a criminal and facilitate the escape of a felon, mere ly because he was a slave. The facts are related iu the Louisville Courier. A negro slave was indicted at Frank fort, Ky., for burglary. Beforo trial ho was spirited away by some abolitionists into Canada. Some years afterwards he was found at Chicago, and having taken to stealing there, was committed and sent to the State prison at Joilet. His term expired on the 19th of February. His owner, apprised of these facts, ob tained a requisition from the Governor of Kentucky for the surrender of the ne gro, as a “fugitive from justice.” Gov. Bissell anticipated the period of the ter mination of the sentence, by a pardon, which took place a week before the regu lar expiring of the term of imprisonment. The requisition was presented to him on the Bth; lie postponed action until the next day, when tiie papers were granted. The Keutucky officers proceeded to Joilet and found tho negro gone. Gov. Bissell, while assuring the Kentuckians with fair promises, had on the previous day sent an order to the warden of the prison to discharge the prisoner forthwith, ad vising him that he would fill up the par don afterwards to conform to the date of the discharge; and it was nil done accord ingly. The runaway burglar was passed to Chicago, aud thence into Canada, by the direct agency of this Governor, mak ing his official station the means of cover ing and protecting a criminal because he was a slave!
