Since March set in the weather Ims been balmy and Spring Ike, and tho last two or three days and nights unpleas antly warm up to some time Thursday night, when we had a light rain, which closed by the shifting of the wind to the North West, siuco which time fire has felt quite comfortable. . • Off for Pittsburg. Capt. Thos. Mchin and Charles Blatie, two of our oldest and most experienced river men and steamboat builders, left en route for Pittsburg—tho former on Monday, tho latter this morning—to bring out something new in their lino for the trade next fail. Two hotter men or more experienced workmen could not have gone on so important a mission.— We expect froip theso gentlemen three handsome ami substantial steamers to plough the waters of the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers. Sucee-s attend them. W 001. The history of the growth of wool is very curious. Fifty years ago not n pound of fine wool was raised in the Uni ted States, in Great Britain, or in any other country except Spain In tho lat lcr country, the flocks were owned exclu sively by the nobility or by the crown, in 1794, a small flock was sent to the Elector of Saxony as a present from the King of Spain, whence the entire product of Saxony wool, now of such an immense value, in 1809, during the second inva sion of Spain by the French, some of the valuable crown flocks were sold to raise money. The American Consul at Lisbon, Mr. Javis, purchased fourteen hundred head, and sent them to this country. A portion oflhe pure unmixed Merino blood of these flocks is to bo found in Vermont at this time. In 1824 and 1825 quite a speculation in Saxony sheep prevailed— large numbers were imported into Bos ton. A Saxony ram would bring as high as S500; large sums were made and lost during the excitement. Such was tho origin of the immense flocks offine-wooled sheep in the United States. It is a historical fact that the notes of the hank of England circulated for sixty live years without any attempt to coun terfeit them. In the year 1708, a liuen draper of London counterfeited a uote for the first time, by cutting it into as many pieces as there were pictures and words upon, and employing the best en graves to copy them on separate plate, ily printing the sepernte plates success ively on one piece of paper, the same ef fect is produced as if the whole had been engraved ou one plate. William lleury Vaughan—for such was his name—was hung for his ingenuity; and counterfeit ing went on increasing until, about the year 1818, there were about 130 execu tions for the crime in one year, and all for counterfeiting the notes ou the hank of England alone. leaentreff-rtllite Facts, The hoston Courier concludes an able article with the following truisms: “ Without slaves there could be no such cotton crop as New Euglaud asks for her manufactures. Without the mills of New England, its agriculture and mechanic arts would soon fall into their former comparatively unprosperous state. And even in Mr. Wilson’s own town of Natick —what a deplorable change would soon follow upon its present thrifty condition? Without cotton, shoes could not be pur chased, either for the negroes, or for a considerable portion of the white popu lation, at the South —for certain it is, that the comfort and prosperity of Natick, and other New England manufacturing towns, is directly growing out of the bon dage of 4,000,000 of men.” Fatal Conflict with a Negro. This morning we learn that a runaway negro, belonging to Mr. Robert V. Ware, was found at tiie gin house of Mr. Chas. H. Moltonintbis county. Messrs. Mol ton and Ware, and the latter gentleman’s overseer, (whoso name we have not heard,) attempted to arrest the negro, who, armed with a scythe blade aud pis tol, fired at the latter, the ball strikiug Mr. Multon in the forehead and indicting a painful hut not dangerous wound. Mr. Ware aud his overseer, it is stated, then fired upou the negro, killing him instant ly. The coroner was immediately sent for, aud the inquest will probably lie held this afternoon. — Mont. Mail of Wednesday. State House of Tennessee. The Nashville Gazette, of the 18th ult., says the capital building now nearly com pleted, at Nashville, the capital of Ten nessee, is represented to be one of the finest buildings of its kind in the country. It is located ou the summit of a hill, aud npproached from four sides by avenues which rise from terrace to terrace, by white rnarblo steps. The building bus four faces fronting those avenues, each of which is finished with massive col umns. Thu building is of line white limestone. A friend who was present, informs us that at Louisvillo, Geo., last Tuesday, ne groes brought higher prices than ever before known. Old men brought SI,OOO, young men and boys $1,500 to sl,llOO, and youug women without children, $1,900 to $2,000 and upwards—all field hands. Tho terms were notes with in terest from dato—equivalent to cash. The people in Jefferson, we judge, have very little dread of John Urowu.— Auyuila Chronicle. ♦ Important LI Del Suit**. Messrs. I N this ago of adulterated and deleterious Li . quore, it is u source of satisfaction to be able to introduce to public notice the above article—an article of unquestioned purity, and possessing no qualities except such as have the most favoiablo influence ou the human constitution. A sow rods of soil on the banks of the Rhine produces the grape which will flourish nowhere else, from whoso juice proceeds the “Johannis berg,” the choicest wine in the world. A few acres of luml iu Cuba produces a tobacco, the flavor and quality of which, when manufac tured into cigars, me incomparably superior to iiiai oi any oiuer soil. Ami a narrow strip of land iu the parish of Nutchitocheu, in Louisians, bus long supplied the world with a super-excellent article of snuff, from such tobacco us cannot be induced to grow else where. Iu like manner it baa long been known that a liruitid territory, lyiug in the valley < I the Mo uouguliela river, exclusively bringr forth a rye of properties so marked and peculiar tlmt its distilla tion produces a Whisky of such superlative char acter as places it beyond rivalry. By a process recently discovered, and now k nown only to my manufacturer, the graiu from the choicest spot of this favored locality is made to yield tho Aromatic Valley Whisky, with which no other can stand an instunt’s com parison. I have no apprehension of being accured of pub lishing unwarrantable, or even exaggerated enco miums, to any who will first subject my Whisky to test. It is now the standard article at all the first cla-H Hotels and Clubs in tho city of Now York, und wherever It is introduced it at once assumes its leading position, is AWARDED THIS PALM OF SUPERIORITY, and the dernaud for it becoous a thing established. Its medicinal properties are nub, that while its immediate effects are pleasant and grateful, it ex ercises the happiest permanent influ- nee upon the constitution. 1 have analyzed a sample of “Daly’s Aromatic Valley Whisky,” and liud it to be a pan article, of fine flavor, ami will out any deh-tei n.us admix ture.
