One of tho best of tho brief hits by “John Phoenix” at the follies of the time, is contained in that inexhaustible fund of fun, his volume of “l’hoeuixiana.” Dr. Tushmaker was never regularly bred ns a physician or surgeon, but he possessed naturally a strong meehunicnl genius and a fine appetite, and finding liis teeth of grent service in gratifying tho latter propensity, he concluded that ho could do more good in the world and create more real happiness therein by putting Iho teeth of the inhabitants in good order than in any other way ; so ho became a dentist. He was tho man that first invented the method of placing small cogwheels iu tho back teeth for tho more perfect mastica tion of food, and ho claimed to be the original discoverer of that method of fill ing cavities with a kind of putty, which by becoming hard, directly causes the tuoth to ache so grievously, that it has to be pulled, thereby giving the dentist two successive fees for the same job. Tushmaker was one day seated in his office in tho city of Huston, Mass., when a stout old fellow, named Ryles, presen ted himself to have a back tooth drawn. The dentist seated his patient in the chair of torture, and opening his mouth dis covered an enormous tooth on tho right hand side about as large, as he afterwards expressed it, ‘ ‘as a small Polyglot lliblc.” “ 1 shall havo trouble with this tooth,” thought Tushmaker ; but he clapped on his heaviest forceps und pulled. It didn't come. Then he tried the turnscrcw, ex erting his utmost strength, hut tho tooth wouldn’t come. “(Jo away from her#,” suiil Tuskmak er to Uylee, “and return iu a week, and . .i ...... ,t ~.ie —. r..„ .... „„ 1 will UlttW tUttk IUUIU wu< lUi juu, v/a you’ll know the reason why.” llylc-got up, clupped a handkerchief to his jaw, aud went forth. Tho dentist went lo work, and in three days ho invented an instrument which he was confident would pull anything. It was a combination at tho lever, pulley, wheel and axles, inclined plane, wedge and screw. Tho casting was made, and the machine put up in the ollice, over an iron chair rendered perfectly stationary by iron rods going down in the founda tion* of the granite building. iu a week old Uyletf returned ; he was clamped into the iron chair, the forceps connected with the machine attached firm ly to the teeth, and Tusbniaker, station ing himself in the rear, took hold of the lever, four feet long. He turned itslifthlly—old lilies gave a groan, and lifted his right leg. Another turn, another groan, the higher went old llyles’ right leg again. “ What do you raise your right leg for ?” asked the doctor. “ 1 can’t help it,” said tho patient. “ Well,” said Tushmaker, “tho tooth is bound to come now.” lie turned the lever clear round with a sudden jerk, aud snapped old Kyles’ head tleau and clear from his shoulders, leav ing a space of four inches between the several parts. They had a poll viorlem examination ; the roots of the tooth were found extend ed dowu the right side, through the right leg, und turned upiu two prongs directly under tho sole of the right foot. “ Ko wonder,” said Tushmaker, “that he ruised his leg.” The jury thought so 100, hut they found tho roots much tyed. and two surgeons swearing that morliUcatiou would have ensued in a few months. Tushmaker was cleared on a vet diet of “justifiable homi cide.’’ lie wn a little shy of that instrument altcrwurds ; but one day nn old lady, feeble and lluccid, oatno in to have Iter tooth drawn, and thinking it would come out very eu.*y, Tushtnuker concluded just by way of variety, to try the machine. Uodid ho, and at the first turn drew the old lady*H skelctoo completely and en tirely from tier body, leaving her a mass of quivering jelly in her choir. Tunhinaker took lier homo in a pillow oust*, bhe lived neveti year.i< after thut, aud they called her the •• India rubber woman.” aSlic had Buttered terribly with the heumatism, hut alter this occurrcnco never had any pain in her bone*. The dentbt kept them iu a gluKScane. Afnrwardrt thin machine was fold to the contractor of the Itonton custotuhouie, slid it was found that a child three yearn of ago could, by a single turn of a screw, raise a stone weighing twenty-five tons. Smaller ouch were nmdo on the same principle, and sold to the keepers of ho tels and restaurants. They were advan tageously used for boning turkeys. There is no moral at nil to this story, and it is possible that the circumstances may have become tlightly exaggerated. Os course there can bo no doubt of the main incidents. It is rumored that ex.-Uov. Henry S. Foote is to assume the editorial control of the Nashville Manner. Movements are actively progressing for the Congress oftho five great l.uropenn powers.
