An ** Able** JCditor.
Every judicious and observant man will
concur iu the following views, presented
by the editor of one of the best conducted
journals in tho Old Dominion, tho Alex
andria Gazette:
Many peoplo estimate thu ability of a
newspaper mid the industry and talents of
its editor, by the quautity of editorial
matter which it contains. It is compar
atively an easy task for a frothy writer
to pour out daily, columns of words—
words, upon any utnl all subjects. Ilia
ideas may flow in “one weak, washy, ev
erlasting Hood,” and his command of lan
guage may enable him to string them to
gether like hunches of onions, and yet his
paper may be a meagre and poorconcern.
lint what is the labor and toil of such a
uian who displays bis “leaded matter”
ever so largely, to that imposed on the
judicious, well-iuformcd editor, who ex
ercises his vocation with an hourly con
sciousness of its responsibilities and du
ties, und devotes himself to tho conduct
of his paper with tho same care and as
siduily that a sensible lawyer bestows
upon a suit, or a Immune physician upon
a patient, without regard to show or dis
play I Indeed, tho men writing part of
editing u paper, is but a small portion of
the wi<rk. The industry is not even
shown there. Thu care, the time em
ployed in selecting, is far more impor
tant, und the tact of a good editor is bet
ter shown by his selections than anything
else ; and that wo all know is half the
battle. But, as we liuve said, au editor
ought to ho estimated, und bis labors un
derstood and appreciated, by tbe general
conduct of Ids paper—its tone—its tem
per—its uniform, consistent course—its
principles—its aims—its manliness —its
dignity—its propriety. T# preserve those
as they should bo preserved, is enough to
occupy fully thu time and attention of
any man. If to this bo added tbe gener
al supervision of thu newspaper estublish
meut, which most editors have to encoun
ter, thu wonder is how cau they find time
or room to write at all.
lli>v Iln y D.hc, at Wa.hlngtoii.
An Obio editor gives his views of seve
ral dunces which he lately witnessed at a
hall iu Washington. Ho says: “The
want of variety iu this metropolitan
dancing was, however, fully made up hy
tho fancy things, such a* the wait, and
polka. These were absolutely barbarous.
The old fashioned wall*, the morality of
which even Byron called in question, is
here ignored us altogether too cold and
distant. The lady lays her head on the
gentleman’s bosom, hand on bis,
nnd the other in his coat-tail pocket, and
resigns borself to his embraces and goes
to sleep, ull but her feet, which, when
not carried by him clear off the floor go
patting around on the toes. Tbe gentle
man thus entwined throws his head back
nnd bis eyes up, liko a dying calf; his
body bent in tho sbnpe of a figure 4. be
whirl* ; back up, ewings around, swoons,
to all appearances, dashes forward, and
leavos tho ring, to the delight of all de
cent people.
