A letter from Waco, Texas, about the middle of February, states that two Bap tist preachers who went to Rainey’s Creek to hold a protracted meeting, came upon a largo drove of horses the Indians had stolen. The Indians gave immediate chase and shot six arrows into one of the preachers and one into the other. They aro both shot in the body, the arrows pendrating tho lungs. Their names are Wliito and Griffith. Large Proce.elon. As an incident of tho “ peculiar insti tution” in tho South, the Camden (S. C.) Journal says, one of the largest proces sions seen for years, followed the remains of a negro mau in that place to the grave. At least three hundred negroes from live years of age upwards, wero in atten dance. He was visited by his Pastor during his last illness, and ull his waDts temporal and spiritual attended to. He was decently prepared for burial, and a neat coffin enclosed his body. lCicltcmrnt Iu Knlcrprl.e, M 1... A public meeting was held iu Enter prise, Miss., the 12th iust., and resolu tions wero adopted requesting lion. W. E. Bird to resigu the office of Mayor of the city, and condemning a book called “Cot ton is King,” which had been sold by Bishop and Manchester, two agents, who were imprisoned, indicted, tried and ac quitted on their trial. Tho work in question is believed to be incondiary in its character, and hostile to slavery, and on the trial of the agents, Mr. Bird defended them in the capacity of a lawyer. Hence the indignation of tho people. Tlio Alabama Insurance Law. A Mobile correspondent of the Mont gomery Advertiser says : “ The losses by the late fire have caus ed many of our citizenH to complain of tho late act taxing so heavily Insurance Agen cies in this Slate. They say they prefer fair and open competition in insurance as well as in other business; that the supply of local capital is not equal to the demand for insurance, aad that their rights and the security of their property are made secondary and subservient to the inter ests of a few local corporations. The recent Legislature of Alabama passed an Act discriminating in its pro visions against Foreign Insurance Com panies, tho object of which was intended to benefit Domestic Companies. llou. Lewi. C. Levin. Alluding to the death of the Hon. Lewis C- Levin, the Philadelphia Bulletin says: Iu tho year 1843 he became strongly imbued with tho spirit of Native Ameri canism, and if he was not the founder of tho party in 181 J, he was at least among the most influential of its founders. Mr. Levin became the editor of the Daily Sun about that time, and be made the paper the organ jointly of Native Americanism and Temperance. On the memorable Monday, May (itb, 1844, Mr. Levin was making a speech in the market house at Kensington, when the meeting he was ad dressing was fired upon and Shiffler, ltbiuedollur and other natives were killed and created party martyrs. This act was tho commencement of the series of terri ble riots, murders and church burnings which disgraced Philadelphia in May, 1844, to be repeated in July of the same year, at the time of tho bloody affair at the Church of St. Philip de Neri, in Queen street, Southwark. On that occa sion Mr. Levin used all the power of his eloqueuce to restrain the fury of his own parti/.ans. During this exciting period Mr. Levin wus not idle with either pen or speech. He was one of the principal stump speakers of the day, and his strong Native American articles, published in tho Sun, made the paper immensely pop ular in his party, uud run up the sub scription list enormously. He wee among those who were arrested on the charge of treason at that time ; but the trial, never took place. In 1845 Mr. Levin was elected to represent tho first district in Congress. He served with credit to himself from 1815 to 1847, and again from 1847 to 1851. He generally formed a part of the Committee on Naval Affairs. nnrnl.iK of tlic Jiiilkc Porter—Fur ther Particular..—Srrloua Lu.. of Lire.
