The Court Circular reports another ltelgravinn elopement. A young lady eloped with her guardian’s under butler on St. Valentino's day, and nothing was heard of their whereabouts until tho 18th, when a letter, containing a mnrriagc cer tificate, was received by Mr. W., inform ing him that the ceremony had been per formed at a well known church in the aristocratic neighborhood of Wnpping. The lady, on coming of age, is entitled to £IO,OOO. _ Notwithstanding Macaulay’s reputa tion for conversational power, he appears to liavo tittored lew /xpi mots, to have made few conversational points which are re peated and remembered. One of the very tew good stories current of him is the fol lowing: It is said ho met Mrs. Beecher Stowe at Sir Charles Trevelyan’s, and rallied her on her admiration of Shakes peare. “Which of his characters do you liko best?” said ho. “Desdemona,” said the lady. “7\h, of course,’’ was tho re ply, “for-sho was the only one who ran after a black man.” I*or Fellow 1 It is said that a man living in Philadel phia not long since attempted to escape from a termagant wife, and to that end hid on board a tow-boat that was soon to proceed down the Delaware. liis wife tracked him to the boat but could not find him on board. Just as she left, the boil er of the boat exploded, whereby her husband was blown into the water, and thence swam ashore within view of her. Sho at once enptured him and carried him off, whilst he protested that he would rather have encountered death than have boon caught by her. A L.OIIK Political Career for a Voting Man. lion James A. Pearce, who has just been ro-clected to the United States Sen ate from Maryland, was an old Whig, is now a Democrat, and has bad the rare good fortune of an uninterrupted public servioc for more than thirty years. lie entered the Maryland Legislature at twenty-five, was sent to Congress at tho age of thirty, and after serving six years in the Lower House, was elevated to the Scnato in 18R1. His new Senatorial term lengthens out his services in that branch of the Government to twenty-four years. Ho is now but fifty-five years old. The Iron Trade. The London Times says that tho num ber of furnaces in full work iu 1850, in the north eastern iron district, compris ing Northumberland, Durham and Cleve land, was sixty-eight, or ten more titan the average for 1858. The total produc tion of last year wub 020,000 tons, of which 43,934 tons were exported and 124.006 tons were used in the district, shipped coastwire and sent away by rail. The total <iuantity thus absorbed was 571,000 tons, leaving a surplus of 40,000 tons over the deliveries. Thu stuck, December 31, 1858, was 25,000 tons, and the estimated stock ut the close of 1850, was, therefore, 74,000 tons. Against these slocks of pig iron, large sales have, however, been made for future delivery. Four furnaces were completed and putin blast iu tho district in 1850; tivo more are now nearly ready, aud Bix mote have been begun. Tito Philadelphia North Americun re marks, that it is to be regretted that there are not equally prompt und trustworthy returns of the American iron production at the termination of every year. It will be seen that the average production of l be Knglisb furnaces was about 0000 tons which, although large, is less than that of the Lehigh unthrucite furnaces. These produced, in four or five instances, about lOJMk) tons to the furnace during 1850. The total production of anthracite iron in tho Lehigh region, in 1859, was about 130,000 tuna, aud in tho Scbulkitl about 80,000 tons, in both cases a con siderable advance upon last year. In the circle of Philadelphia business, it is estimated that the production for the past year was probably 250,000 tons of pig iron, but for more distant places it is feared that the return will present a far less encouraging statement. On*- Hundred Girls In a Telt-ffrApli Office. In England the business of operating telegraph wires has been to a great ex tent placed in the bands of young ladies, who find it very agreeable employment. The inland department of the Electric Telegraph Company in London now em ploys one hundred young ladies, whore, eeive and transmit ihe messages from all parts of the United Kingdom. The room in which they are engaged is lofty, spa cious, ami admirably lighted and venti lated. A number of long tables are plac ed across the room upon which the in struments are placed, an attendant being seated opposite each one. There is one table for Liverpool, another for Man chester, it third for Birmingham and Glasgow, and ho on for the whole of the chief towns. When Dot engaged at the instruments, the girls employ themselves with needlework or reading. The room is in charge of a matron. The compen sation ranges from 10s. to 255. ($2.50 to $0.25) per week. Teu hours constitute a day’s work. A period of six weeks is sutlieient to learn the whole process of telegraphing, but longer practice is re quired to impart efficiency aud rapidity of execution. There Is a kitchen in which the young ladies cook their dinners, and a servant to wait upon them, with a lav atory aud other appliances for their com fort and convenience. The access to the room is by a staircase exclusively devot ed to tbe ladies, and no person of the rudor sex is upon any aocouut admitted into their department except upon a spe cial order. To tbo honor of the “fair sox,” the ex periment has proved to demonstration that tho proverbial incapacity of women to keep a secret is a great untruth. Os the thousands of important and valuable Secrets which must yearly come to the knowledge of tbeso young ladies, not a a single one has ever transpired. Many of the fair operatives are closely related to individuals distinguished in literature, science and art. ♦ Ladles and Gentlemen— ls yon wish to bsveyonr wateho, nicely fixed ami put In good running order, you most go to the SWINGING CLOCK, No.Bl Broadstreot.
