13y a private dispatch from Apalachi
cola, we learn that the steamer Uehee,
Capt. Stapler, left that city yesterday
morning, for Columbus. She brings a
steamer’s freight.
Spring Shower.
The sultriness of the weather yester
day was relieved in the afternoon by a
hard shower of rain, mingled with hail
and a considerable play from “Heaven’s
artillery.” It is yet quite warm, and
.< garden sass” has received new life from
the visitation.
Dew Advertisements.
All who have beeves, sheep and such
like for sole, are referred to Giittinger
& Smith’s advertisement.
J. W. Pease has received a lot of very
interesting books for sale. See list.
Mrs. Dessau advises the ladies that her
stock of millinery is received, and the
opening day will be Tuesday next. The
ladies are solicited to call and feast the
eyes.
We invite attention to Jefferson & Ham
ilton’s advertisement of furniture and
wooden ware for sale. They offer a lib
eral discount to purchasers. All who
would encourage home industry should
give them a call.
Lockhart, Young & Roberts present
extraordinary inducements to those need
ing carriages, rockaways and any thing
in their line of business, which can be
obtained at great bargains. They are
also well prepared for repairing. See
their advertisement for particulars.
Mr. John 11. Bass advertises likely ne
gro men for hire.
Merchants’ Meeting.
Agreeably to adjournment, the mer
chants of the city who signed the Consti
tution and By Laws reported by the com
mittee for the organization of a Board of
Trade, met yosterday afternoon and or
ganized. The following gentlemen were
elected officers :
President —R. M. Gnnby.
Vice President —ll. S. Estes.
Secretary —George W. Dillingham.
We are gratified that tho energetic ef
forts of those who have been most active
in this movement, are realized. A nu
cleus is thus formed for a larger and
more permanent organization ; and tho
merchants generally of the city will
doubtless appreciate the importance of
an association for advancing the mercan
tile and commercial interests of the city.

Steßm Fire Buglne.
We enjoyed the pleasure on Thursday,
of witnessing tho operations of a Steam
Fire Engine built entire in this city by
Mr. George J. Golden of tho Columbus
Iron Works. It was engaged in filling
the largo new oistern recently construct
ed by the Gas company, from the river,
raising the water, 15,000 gallons an hour,
some fifty feet without using a third of
its power. It is light—easily handled,
and can be ready to play a stroam within
ten minutes from the timo of an alarm
Its capacity ig equal to eight horse pow
er, and can throw three streams, drawing
Us water at the same time. Tho con
struction of this machine is very credita
ble to Mr. Golden, and should at once be
purchased by the city and placed in the
hands of a competent company of gentle
men, composed, we would suggest, of
active and retired enginemcn and machi
nists. With this machine to supply our
baud machines, we need baveJno"fear of
fires so long as tho Chattahoochee flows
on its course.
Cotton Planters’ Convention.
l’he Cotton Planters’ Convention inof
in Macon on the 27th, Col. Howell Cobb
presiding.
It was resolved to hold another Fair to
be held tho 2d and 3d weeks in November
next, the place to be determined by the
Executive Committee.
It was decided to send a Commissioner
to Europe charged with carrying out and
consummating the Direct Trade move
ment initiated last year by the Conven
tion. Col. Howell Cobb was chosen
Commissioner and a thousand dollars ap
propriated to defray the expenses of the
commissioner to Europe.
The Treasurer was also authorized to
pay to Mr. C, G. Baylor five hundred
dollars in consideration of valuable ser
vices rendered by him in promoting tho
aims of tho convention.
Special Dispatch to the New York Tribune.
Fort Sumter.
Washington, March 25.—A1l the sen
sation statements from here, alleging
that the President lias issued or sent
preparatory or other orders to Charleston
by Surgeon Fox, Mr. Lamon, or anybody
else, for the evacuation of Fort Sumter,
are fabricated, nnJ wholly unworthy of
attention. Ever since Major Anderson
made his report in detail to Mr. Holt of
the state of supplies in the Fort, before
this Administration came into power,
and General Beott advised the withdrawal
of his command, it has been evident that
it tva- a military necessity, which could
not be avoided. The President has,
however, as already stated in my dis
patches, determined to satisfy himself by
other means of information, beside the
official reports of all the facts, and no
decision can bo made until it is received.
He has nothing to do with issuing orders
for the withdrawal. General Scott did
not choose to take the exclusive respon
sibility, and hence referred it to the Cab
inet more than two weeks ago, when he
was convinced that no other alternative
was presented.
In sending personal agents there to
make inquiries, and see for themselves,
he has not intended to retiect upon Maj.
Anderson or the officers around him, but
to assure himself with testimony which
will go far to convince the country that
he is compelled to allow tho withdrawal.
