The experience of this summer has in
duced many to believe that a first-class
hotel at Montgomery would be a paying
enterprise, and a movement to obtain the
necessary capital is not improbable.
A gentleman in the city yesterday received
a letter from Capt. Jos. A. Roberts, who
announced bis safe arrival at Hamburg, af
ter a sea voyage of fifty-three days. We
are pleased to learn that nls health has been
benefited.
Next week we will have moonlight nights,
and we understand the open cars on the
Barnard Street Road will be run every fifteen
minutes from eight until eleven o’clock for
the benefit of those who wish to enjoy a
most delightful ride.
The store ou Broughton street, near Bar
nard, formerly occupied by Mr. F. IF. Corn-
well, is being extended to the lane and will
be raised another story. The work Is under
the direction of Major John R. Hamlet, and
s ill be completed by the 1st of September.
A very officious person, on one occasion,
yaking to a gentleman’s wife, said: “Ah,
madam, permit me to chaperone you?”
“Not much,” said the husband, “I’m the
ebap wbo runs this institution," and the o.
p. went out to study up where the joke
came in.
Mr. Patrick O’Connor has commenced the
erection of a two-story brick building at
the corner of East Broad and President
streets, a portion of the lower floor of which
will be used fora wbeelright and blacksmith
shop. It will be a decided improvement to
the corner.

centre is a strong and at ihe same time neat
iron brace. The lower portion of the car at
the platform steps is strongly braced with
iron, an improvement on some of the care of
the same style. In appearance it is, if any
thing, superior to the open care purchased
from the North, and is certainly as well and
substantially constructed. It is comfortable,
runs easy, is handsomely finished, and those
who had the pleasure of riding in It on the
trial trip over the line expressed great pleas
ure and satisfaction at such fine w ork being
turned out in Savannah. Of tbe painting
we cannot say too much. It shows a true
artist’s hand, and is reaiiy exquisitely done,
and reflects great credit ui>on Mr. R. C. Fet-
zer, whose work it is, and who also did all
the iron work. The wood work was done
by Mr. Samuel Hazelton, and, as we have
said, could not be better.
Instead of the awning curtains at the side,
the company have had placed in this cai
neat curtains of taper wood-splits, on rollers,
upon the inside. These are bettor for the
purpose, lighter and more convenient.
We are pleased to chrouicle' the comple-
>ii of this car, which is a credit to this
|>opular line, and practically demonstrates
the skill and ability of our Savannah me
chanic*.
The new car will be run regularly
to-day, and we may here remark that
hereafter the summer or open cars, which
are drawn by double teams, will be used ex
clusively on tbe line daily.
