factories or some sort of manufacturing
establishments on the co-operative plan

selves capitalists, and would no longer
have cause to complain of their opprea

storm there were about twelve children and
two gentlemen under tbe canvas, seme
of the children who sought shelter under

dav school. Lightning struck the centre
pole of the tent, near which the children
were seated, and the current, passing down,
struck Mary Ann Elfrey, age-1 ten rear*,
who was leaning again-t the pole, killing
her instantly. Her brother William, who
was near by, was thrown violently to *.be

contents of a coal oil lamp, which set fire to
t-ome bay, and from this the tent caught
fire. The flames, however, were quickly
extinguished by parties outside, who entered
and rescued the children. Had tbe accident

concentrated at but one point, it might
be kept down, but as it is not. there
•-eems to lie little or no hope of averting
tbe evil, and it is believed that tbe
Health Boanl of New Orleans will be
compelled to declare the fever epidemic
within the next few days. The number
of dmvths is on tbe increase-every day,
and the demoralizing effects on business
are already very perceptible. Tbe
leading mercantile bouses in New York
and ebewhere have, within tbe last few
days, ordered all shipments to New Or
leans stopped, and it is feared that in a
short time the city will become isolated.
Galveston is quarautined against New
Orleans, cutting off passengers, freight
and mails. The Health Inspectors board
all train-' twelve miles out from the city,
and put off all passengers and their hag-
gage found to have been in New Orleans
since the 35th of July.
Ir. formation received at the Treasury
Department is to the effect that .the yel
low fever in New Orleans is retarding
work in the United States Mint there,
and will prevent a resumption of silver
coinage at the time expected.

Eliza Pinkbton.—Dr. A. 8. Ilelmick.
of Ouachita parish. La., who was called
to attend Eliza Pinkston after the assault
upon her herself and husband, iu a letter
to the Louisville Courier-Journal, shows
from Pinkston's own confession to him
the time, that negroes killed her hus
band and wounded her, and that her
wounds were not of such a nature as to
prevent her from getting around without
assistance in New Orleans.

eclipse observations. Many pet theories at

tronomers of the various expeditions will
meet at Denver to compare notes. Pro
fessor Watson, of Ann Arbor, feels con
fident that the planet which he discover
ed is Vulcan, which has been missing
since 1859- Tbe absence of lines in the
corona** spectrum is considered moat ex
traordinary. All previous eclipse obser
vations have revealed them. That the
corona is composed of*a material not
shining by its own light is accepted by
astronomers. What effect tbe quiet con- the
dition of the sun, as shown by the almost
entire absence of protuberances, will L
probably have on the climate of the icg
