Aldrich &, Green. mh3 Jjp We copy by request a part of the following notice from the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, the Evening Mercantile Journal and the Boston At las, wherein the Editors speak with unqualified praise of a new remedy for pulmonary disease, which does indeed seem to be worthy their approbation. It is the Cherry Pectoral, prepared by Mr. J. C. Ayer, of Lowell, Mass., an Apothecary and Chemist of high standing, and being commended by Physicians of the highest respectability, who have tested its virtues, has at least one merit—entire freedom from al 1 suspicion of Quackery. Its ingredients and mode of prepara tion are folly laid open to the inspection of the Profes sion, and it is confidently believed its combination is such as to give the utmost energy of remedial effect. The formula, from which it is prepared, has been pub lished in several of the public Medical journals of the day, and thus ceasing to be a secret compound its suc cess is made to depend upon its intrinsic merits alone. The Professor of Materia Medica, at Pittsfield, laid it before his class as one of the worthiest, truest and best things of its kind that had fallen under his notice. Other Colleges and high Medical authorities have given it a scarcely less flattering reception. We find in the statistical table of Lowell Manufactures, this ar ticle mentined as a staple product of that city. The flattering success that has attended its use does indeed seem to give reasonable ground for hope that it will yet be instrumental in subduing, to some extent, Con sumption, and the other pulmonary diseases so alarm ingly prevalent in this climate. While the Pectoral Cherry is a powerful and efficient remedy in aggrava ted disease, it is also, in diminished doses, one of the pleasantest, safest, and best family medicines in use. C otton —The market to-day has been almost at a . stand, and the operations have been very limited— j not sufficient to establish rates. CHARLESTON, March 29.— Cotton— The Up mar*et 0,1 Saturday was but moderately attend- j xt • uyers, and the demand consequently light. l uvff* l e ess ’ sa^es °f die day amounted to about UUU bales, at prices ranging from 10* to ll*—being witnout material change from those of the two or three preceding days. t fj ce '~ Tl *re was a better demand on Saturday last lor this article, principally by two houses, who ! | took about 700 bbls. at prices which holders had pre- I viously asked, but on account rff the dullness of the ■ market were unable to obtain, and ranging from S3| 1 to 84, principally at the latter. A small parcel of 27 bbls fancy brands, we were informed, brought 84*. NEW ORLEANS, March 24.—The river is still very high, being within 16 inches of high-water mark. Cotton— —Arrived since the 19th inst., of Louisiana and Mississppi 6968 oales, Tennessee 3395; together 10,363 bales. Cleared in the same time for Liverpool 10,853 bales, Havre 3970, Gottenburg 1208, New York 918, Boston 693. Philadelphia 110, Charleston 7 ; I together 17,764 hales—making a redaction in stock | of 7401 bales, and leaving on hand, inclusive of all on shipboard not cleared on the 23d instant, a stock ! of 214,509 bales. We had occasion to remark in our last report that alter several days of extreme dullness, with great ir regularity in prices, the Cotton market had assumed more steadiness under a rather improved demand, and closed on Friday at rates which corresponded pretty nearly with our previous quotations. On Saturday a fair inquiry continued, and about 4000 bales were dis posed of. at the prices of the day previous. On Mon day the business was confined to some 2000 bales, the firmer prices demanded by holders having apparently checked the operations of purchasers. Yesterday there was a fair inquiry, but the firmness of holders, who supply the market sparingly, in the daily expec tation of later European advices, kept the transactions within moderate limits, the sales being 3800 bales ; making a total for tiie three days of 9800 bales—taken for England and France, the Continent and the North. As regards prices, they have gradually stiffened from day to day, and although we cannot quote any posi tive advance, yet it may be remarked that instead of being easy at our lowest quotations, which was the case at the time of making up our last report, they are now fully up to our outside figures. The receipts at this port since Ist September (exclusive of the arri vals from Mobile and Florida,) are 563,287 bales, against 771,959 bales at same date last year; show ing a decrease of 208,672 bales. The sales of the three days embrace about 1200 hhds, and as the receipts have rather fallen short of this amount the supply is somewhat reduced, rendering the mar ket firmer, though without any positive advance, and we continue to quote for Inferior 5 a s*, Common 5* a6, Fair 6* a 6*, Prime and Choice 6| a 7* cents per lb. J\lolasses —The market for Molasses on the Levee has continued dull since our last, the sales for the three days having been about 800 barrels, and prices are again somewhat easier, the range for good lots be ing 23 a 234 cents, with some retail sales of choice, from second hands, at 28f a29 cents per gallon. We have not been able to learn of any transactions on plantation. Flour —Yesterday there was a good demand, and the business amounted to about 7000 bbls, mostly at 85 75 for good shipping brands, with some lots of St. Louis fancy marks at 86 a 6 124 per bbl. The mar ket has fluctuated but little for two or three weeks past, and closes with steadiness. Lard —There has been but a moderate business done in Lard since our last, the sales only embracing about 389 bbls, mostly at Bf, with a few hundred kegs, in various lots, at 9 cents per lb, though buyers show no disposition to pay the highest rate for any conside rable parcels. The extremes for fair to prime, how ever, may still be quoted at 8* a 9 cents per Ih. Bacon —There has been no material alteration in the Bacon market since our last, though the slight de cline mentioned in our last has brought forward more buyers, and about 300 casks have found purchasers at the range of our quotations —8 aß| cents for Sides, and 6a 64 cents per lb. for Shoulders—the highest rate being obtained with difficulty for small lots of the best Cincinnati cured. Hams have been in active request at 94 a 10 cents per lb for plain to extra sugar cured. Bagging and Bale Rope —There has been no further movement in the Bagging and Rope market, and we are apprised of no sales except in the limited way mentioned in several of our previous reviews. At the moment, buyers for speculation appear to be de terred from operating by the high rates generally claimed, to which holders, influenced by a light stock as well as the advanced prices in the West, adhere with firmness. Prices may be quoted at 12 a 12* cts per yard for power-loom Bagging, from which most of the sales are made, and 5 a 6 cents per lb for Rope, the latter figure being paid for the best brands in limit ed parcels. Whiskey — The Whiskey market has remained very much in the same state as before noticed, with scarcely any demand except for small parcels, which sell at 20 a 20* rents per gallon, though doubtless a round lot could be purchased a fraction below our low est figure. Yesterday the only sale of ranch note was a lot of 100 bbls Rectified at 20 cents per gallon, while smaller lots were sold at the same rate. Com mon may be quoted at 21 a 22 cents per gallon. Exchange —Foreign Exchanges continue very dull, the demand being now extremely limited, and our quotations are mostly nominal. Sterling 2* a 3* per cent prem., and Francs 5f.51* a 5657*. Bills on N. York at 60 days are dull at 2| a 3 percent disc ; Bos ton 60 days 2| per cent disc; do Sight Checks in good demand at | a 1 per cent disc ; Baltimore and Philadelphia 60 days 3 a 3* per cent discount. Freights —The business in the freight market has only been to a moderate extent during the past few days, but the rate for Cotton to Liverpool is a little fir mer, one or two vessels having been filled up at |d. Heavy freight remains at our last quoted rates. Coast wise Freights continue dull, and our last quotations are not fully supported. Slipping Intelligence.
