An extra from the office of the St. Louis Re nublican of the 6th inst. contains the following intelligence from Santa Fe : Another Battle with Mexicans and Indians—Two Americans killed and three wounded—Loss of Government Cattle —Arrival of Col. Russell from California. We conversed this morning with Mr. Mur phy, an intelligent gentleman just from Santa Fe. He left on the 29th of May, and furnishes ns with details of very interesting occurrences in New Mexico. On the 27th of May an engagement took place at the Red River canon. 150 miles south east of Santa Fe, between a detachment of about 175 men, under Major Edmondson, and a band of Mexicans and Apache Indians, sup posed to number 400 men. These men were combined together for the purpose of commit ting depredations on American property, and a few days previous had succeeded in stealing 150 horses from traders and others. Maj. Edmondson had been ordered out for the purpose of routing them. At the place in dicated he came upon the enemy rather sudden ly, and not very advantageously. He was crossing a slough at the mouth of the canon, which was very miry, and many of his horses being in a weak condition, he was forced to abandon them. The engagement commenced on foot, and lasted for some two hours. It was not known how many of the enemy were killed : two Americans were killed, and a third was wounded and reluctantly left on the ground when the retreat was ordered. Lt. Elliott, in command of 27 men, principally Laclede Rangers, rendered very efficient ser vice at this juncture. He occupied a point of rocks, and kept the enemy from advancing upon the retreating forces, until they had got out of a dilficult position. He had two men wounded, M. Wash and J. Eldridge but not dangerously. All the horses were shot down or captured. On the 2d of June, Lt. Col. Willock, with 115 men. was met on his march from Taos, in pursuit of the Mexican and Indian forces. He had got upon their trail, and was resolved upon an engagement with them. We are sorry to hear that a garrison of only fifteen soldiers were left at Taos, all of whom were on the sick list. Col. Price was at Santa Fe. with portions of several companies of volunteers. Os his movements and plans we know nothing. Mr. Murphy met Mr. We the red, some other traders and two Government trains of wagons at the crossing of the Pawnee Fork. They had been detained there for three or four days by a freshet in the river, which prevented them from fording it. At this point the Indians an noyed them very much, and succeeded in kill ing a hundred and fifty head of cattle belonging to the Government train (under charge of Capt. Belt, wagon master) and Mr. Goodrich, of this city, also lost 27 animals in the same way. The cattle were all speared and their tails cut off close, to be used as trophies of victory. A Mr. Smith, of Platte county, who was on guard at the time, received seven spear wounds, one of which struck him in the throat, hut it was the opinion of the physician who was along, that hr would recover. About this time, or shortly after, this party, who were travelling the River road, heard the discharge of cannon on the Ridge road, and as a train of Government wagons, having a piece of artillery with them, were on that route, it is supposed that an attack had been made upon them by the Indians. Lieut. Love’s command of dragoons, with the money for the pay of the troops at Santa Fe, was met a few hours travel from the Pawnee Fork, going on well. Col. Wm. H. Russell, Secretary of the Ter ritory of California, came in with Mr. Murphy, and is the bearer of despatches from Col. Fre mont for the Government at Washington. Col. R., we learn, stopped at his residence in Calloway county, to see his family. He may be looked for in this city in a day or two, and we then expect a full account of operations in California. Mr. Murphy heard nothing of the news brought to Westport by the “ Delaware In dian,” some days ago, of the attack upon a train of Government wagons, and the killing ol some fifty teamsters and others, near the VVal nut Creek. It is, therefore, presumed to be totally unfounded. Independence, July 2, 1847. This morning Col Russell, Secretary of the Territory of California, arrived at this place with a party of eighteen men. He stales tha the Indians are growing worse upon the plains and he had three fights with them during hi march. It is expected that the companies and wagoi trains now going out will be attacked, as th Indians are said to be collecting together so the purpose of committing depredations on th trains. Ra.ii. Roao Accident.—A collision tool place on the 13th inst., by two freight engine with their trains, onthe Georgia Road near th Oconee bridge. This was occasioned princi pally by their being on a curve, so that th engineers could not see each other’s trains ti they were too near to be effectually stopped.- The hands escaped by jumping off. The tw engines and tenders were nearly ruined ; ti freight cars were much injured, slipping fro their trucks and scattering their contents abo 00 the ground. —Atlanta Luminary. Special Notices. Rowe, one bottle ot the Balsam of Wild Cherry, which relieved me very much. I have continued to use the same, as the disease returns upon me, and find it always relieves when nothing else will; and, farth er, I have no doubt, could I have had the Wild Cher ry in the first stages of the disease, but that it would have entirely cured me. I can confidently recom mend it as a very valuable medicine for all lung com plaints. Benjamin Robinson. None genuine unless signed I. Butts, on the wrap per. NEW 4 ORK, July 15, 6 P- M. —There contin ues to be an improved feelirag in Breadstull's with a good demand. There has also been considerable sales of Wheat at 110 a 112 cts. fiir red, and 118 a 127 cts. for mixed. There was also a sale of 3000 bushels prime white Genesee at 140 cts. per bushel. There is some inquiry to-day for Cotton. Sales to a moderate extent—prices remain unchanged. Our merchants are now looking anxiously for the Britannia’s news. Shelias had favorable winds, and a short trip is anticipated. Exchange.—There has been quite a heavy business transacted in foreign bills for transmission by the Caledonia. The supply of sterling bills is large, and has rather pressed upon the market, causing some lit tle decline in the rates towards the close. Continen tal bills are firmer, and there is no change in the rates. We quote bills on London 106 and 1061; on : Paris sf. 31f ass 30. f , CHARLESTON, July 17. — Cotton —We stated in our report of the 10th inst., that the transactions in I Cotton for several days, prior to this date, although on quite a limited scale, had been made at the prices I prevailing previous to the receipt of the advices per the Caledonia. 'Through Ticket from Charleston to Baltimore for Fourteen Dollars , meals included. THE CHESAPEAKE BAY COMPA NY, in conjunction with the Wilmington and I Petersburg Rail Road Companies, having reduced their several fares one-third, from former rates, Tra j vellers going North, can now reach Baltimore for sl4, and New York for S2O, by taking the Bay Line | of Boats, arriving at the latter city as early as by any , other Line, and with greater ease and comfort, as the following Schedule will show • SCHEDULE. From Charleston to Baltimore, by die well known route, via Wilmington, Weldon, 'Petersburg, City Point, Old Point Comfort, Norfolk, and by the Cbesa ■ peake Bay to Baltimore. Leave Charleston in one of the Wilmington and Raleigh Rail Road Company’s splendid Steamers at quarter past 3 P. M. daily, arriving at Wilmington at 7 A. M. next morning. Leave Wilmington at 9 A. M. by Rail Road for Weldon, reach Weldon at 9 P. M, Fare from Charles ton toW'eldon, SB. Leave Weldon for Petersburg, by Rail Road at 10 P. M., reach Petersburg at half past 4 A, M. Fare $2. Take Breakfast in Petersburg. Depart at 6 A. M., in the beautiful Iron Steam Boat MOUNT VERNON, Capt. Blow, down the Appa mattox to City Point. Anive at City Point at BA. M. Leave City Point immediately, on board of the CURTIS PECK, Capt. Davis; or ALICE, Capt. Brough; (two of the swiftest and most comfortable River Boats, that run on the Southern waters) for Norfolk, arriving at Norfolk bv 2* P* M, Dining on board of boat at 10 o’clock, for which no charge is made. Leave Norfolk in one of those popular, com fortable and safe Steam Boats, with their experienced Captains and crews—GEORGIA, Capt. Cannon ; HERALD, Capt. Russell; or JEWESS, Capt. Suttou; at 3 P. M., and arrive at Baltimore next morning at 5, A. M. Fare from Petersburg to Baltimore, supper included, $4. In the putting forth of the above Schedule, we have been guided aud admonished by the knowledge we have of v/hat other Lines have already suffered in giving the Traveller false information respecting their Schedule time, and have, to the best of our knowledge and belief made an average time of the arrival and departure between Charleston and Baltimore, by the Bay Route, for the last two months, during which pe *i~‘* “T ' Ho to arrive at Baltimore in time to take the Morning Train for Philadelphia and the several Routes going North, South, East and West. The Bay Company have been in existence upward of Twenty Years, and through this long period, their Boats, built expressly for the route, have successfully run without loss of Life or Property—this fact alone should, and wc believe will, be satisfactory to the Travelling Public, that the Chesapeake Bay Route is one of the safest in the whole Union. We were prepared and fully expected to meet with strong opposition from the Monopoly Line, but had hoped that the warfare would have been conducted in a business like and honorable way, and that their Cards would have contained none of that misrepre sentation and false inuendoes with which they are fill ed against the Bay Line. However, we care not, knowing that we have the cheapest and most pleasant route ; pledging ourselves to convey the travelling public by our schedule, we are willing to abide the issue and leave the result to their choice. Any further information will be cheerfully given and tickets can be had, by application to the under signed at the Charleston Hotel. WM. STRINGER. Agent for the Chesapeake Bay Company.
