r ,. s t f d and dealt with either at the moment or after wards, as the nature of the case may require. Bv order of Col. Wilson, B. H. ARTHUR, Adjutant. Orders No. 25. Headquarters, Vera Cruz, July 19, 1647. 1. Article second of orders No. 24 is amended to read : In the event of an alarm, which will he known by the discharge of a single gun, all Mexicans, men, women and children (watchmen included) residing in town, will repair to the northern end of Fort Con ception; and all neutral foreigners, to the Mole, and the space between the water’s edge and the Custom house, where they will all be secure from injury. 2. Shopkeepers and all unauthorized persons in this city, having machetes, swords or other weapons that may be used in the destruction of life, are hereby prohibited from selling, or in any manner transferring them to the Mexican population, but will have them immediately boxed, marked with the name of the owner, and delivered over to the collector, Mr. Di mond, for safe keeping. By orderof Col. Wilson. W. L. CRITTENDEN, Act’g Ass’t Adj’t Gen. Gen. Pierce, with his command, left Vera Cruz on the 16th July. The correspondent of the Picayune, under date July 20th, says: “On the arrival of his command at the San Juan bridge, they found about eight feet of it cut away. The damage was soon repaired with such timber and logs as could be found near by, and the whole com mand and train prssed over in safety. It is rumored that the Puente Nacional and the bridge over Plan del Rio have been served in the same way by the guerillas.” In reference to a detachment of this com mand, the correspondent of the Times, under date .1 uly 22d, says : “ After all the delay which occurred in getting off the train and escort uuder Gen. Pierce, many of the wagons were in an unprepared state, and became de - tached from the main body. An escort of a hundred and fifty or two hundred troops was detailed to re main with the stragglers and guard them until they could rejoin the train, while the main body moved forward. The detachment had, however, advanced ouly a few miles beyond Santa Pe, when it was at tacked by a large party of guerrillas, which kept it engaged for about four hours, at the end of which time the Mexicans were well “ used up,” and the Americans moved forward. A gentleman who pass ' ed along the road yesterday morning, states that he saw several dead bodies in the vicinity —all Mexicans —and has no doubt that the guerrillas had met with a considerable loss. No wounded have arrived here from our troops, and it is to be presumed that their loss has been small. It is strange that no messenger has been despatched to the Governor with the intelli gence. The firing was plainly heard by our sick, which had been left behind at Santa Fe.” Vomito. —This disease, the terror of foreigners in Vera Cruz, still continues its ravages, but it is quite certain that the health of the city has immensely im proved, in comparison with that during past years, through the enlightened measures introduced by the Americans, The Board of Health are unceasing in their labors to prevent and mitigate the ravages of this horrid scourge. Lieut. Moore, of the 12th Infantry, died at the hos pital of San Francisco on the 17th inst., and Captain Duff, of the 3d Dragoons, died on the same day at camp. Capt. D. made many friends here during his sojourn, and is much lamented. Our Quartermaster, Major Smith, has been down with the vomito for several days, but I am happy to say that he is now doing finely. Gor. Wilson. We are sorry to learn that the Governor of Vera Cruz was taken suddenly and alarmingly ill on the morning of the 22d inst. We trust that he has recovered before this. ' Tobasco . —Commodore Perry has again left Anton Lizardo for Tabasco, and it is reported that the furth er occupation of that place is to be, for the present, abandoned. Question of Rank. —The correspondent of the N. O. Times says: “ A quarrel on the subject of rank has also arisen in our army, but I presume the consequences will not be very serious. The Coinmander-in-Chief has made a very sensible decision on the subject, and the matter lies in a proper shape, pending an appeal. Just hink of Gem Worth serving under such a man as Pillow, or even under Quitman! Napoleon under Col. Pluck! Gen. Quitman is a gentleman, and a good officer—perhaps the very best of his class of ap pointments, but he should never think of leading Worth, who is decidedly, and by general consent, the second man in the army, in point of talent and fitness for command.” Caustic, But True! The Philadelphia United States Gazette, meet ing tiie slanderers of the Union, ct id omne ge nus, concerning Whig patriotism, thus vigor ously fights hack : •‘The President made the crisis—the Whigs met it; the President declared the war—the Whigs called armies—the Whigs crowded their ranks and led them to victory. Yet the Admin istration presses have dared to reproach them ! Who won the triumphs over which the coun try rejoices with an exceeding joy? The Whig Taylor and the Whig Scott.” “What have the leaders of the Polk party given to the country and the contest ? Lip loyalty and tongue valor. And what their op ponents? Where are the sons of Crittenden and Webster? And where is the prop and pride of the age of that most illustrious and hon ored of living men —Henry Clay? His blood, reddening the soil of Buena Vista, cries to Heaven against the calumniators who daresay that the Whigs of America are untrue to their country. While Henry Clay, at Ashland, weeps for his son—weeps, while he rejoices that he died as he wished to die, for his coun try—James K. Polk, at the White House, in structs his pensioned presses to accuse the par ty of which Clay is the head and heart, of sym pathising with the foes of the Republic. What can be thought of the party that af fects to love the actors, but hate the action—to favor the war but prosecute the warriors—to rejoice in the triumph, but malign the victors? Such is and has been from the beginning of the war, the altitude of the Administration and its friends. We will not renew complaints of a twelve months against the existing war of the President—his attempts to deny r supplies and discredit commanders—for, are not these re gistered in every column of this journal? But we must direct the attention of the people to the evidence of rancourous hostility to Gen. Taylor, manifested by the Administration for months previous to the astonishing victory al Buena Vista—a triumph which the Administra tion labored to render a defeat. We will not in the connexion, refer to the Administration attacks upon Taylor in Con gress, the shir upon his conduct at Monterey nor the attempts to supersede and disgrace hire by the appointment of Benton. Nor will w< urge the unnatural fact that the chief, to whon the plans of the Administration offered up Tay lor and his army as a sacrifice, was its protegi and co-intrigner—and they are of a charade; that would induce us to suppress them for thi honor of the country, were that possible. But it is not possible There is now in tin War Department at Washington a letter frou Taylor in relation to this subject, which th Administration dares not publish. Sooner o later it must see the light. The next Congres? which will be composed of a majority t Whigs, will compel its publication ; and th facts which it will disclose will seal the doom < this wretched Administration, and the still moi wretched creatures who live by it. We pit the retainers of Mr. Polk, those in the receij of his wages, for they must, in the present mai ifestations of public contempt, despise then selves. The great fish of the ocean have the barnacles, pilotrfisb, and followers; but w have never heard tha’ the herring bore with i into crooked creeks and paltry shallows, an such retinue. It is bad enough to be the idol tor of a false god; but meanness ineffable i worship a lizard or a toad.” Definition of a Kiss. —A kiss is thus defiut in a love-letter written in the year 1670, at translated from the German: ‘ What is a kisj A kiss is, as it were, a seal, expressing our si cere attachment—the pledge of future union a dumb, but at the same time audible langua' of a loving heart —a present, which, at tl lime that it is given, is taking from us the ii pression on an ivory coral press —a crirast balsam for a love-wounded heart—a sweet hi °f the lip—an affectionate pinching of tl mouth—a delicious dish which is eaten wi scarlet spoons—a sweetmeat which is planted | and gathered at the same time —the quickest exchange of questions and answers of two lov , era—the fourth degree of love.” Punch, speaking of Jenny Lind, the Swedish songstress, who seems to have enraptured the frequenters of the Opera in London, says: I “To call Jenny Lind a Swedish nightingale is ; a compliment to the bird, which will put an ad ditional feather in his cap—or, we should rather say, his tail —for the remainder of his exist ence.” There’s not a heath, however rude, But has some little flower, To brighten up its solitude, And scent the evening hour. There’s not a heart, however cast, By grief and sorrow, down, ( But hath some memory of the past, To love and call its own. Special Notices. I. O. O. F. If the vitalizing fluid which pervades every tissue, every membrane, fibre, filament, gland, or other organ, primary or subsidiary ; if the blood be charged with the element of disease, sickness must j be the consequence—and until the causes of diseases existing in the blood are eradicated, no permanent relief can be expected. It is here that the powerful health-restoring properties of Sands’ Sarsaparilla are manifested ; itssearchingoperafion reachesthe causes of disease, and the cures it performs are therefore radical and thorough. Its potential virtues are attest ed by thousands of rheumatic and scrofulous patients, and by all who have taken this preparation for dis eases of the skin. It at once arrests the internal de rangement and eradicates the outward evidences of disease. gjjf* Price $1 per bottle. For sale, wholesale and retail by A. B. & D. L Wednesday some 500 bales changed bauds. On , Thursday again, there was a good inquiry, but the in , difference on the part of holders to offer their stocks f at present prices restricted the sales to some 1500 bales. Friday, owing in a measure to the inclement 5 state of the weather, only 300 bales were sold. It i will be seen by our quotations that the favorable news 1 from Europe has advanced the price of cotton in this 3 market fully Jc. per lb. The demand has been steady, i . and the very unfavorable condition of the weather, it having rained almost incessantly for near a month t J past, had tended to inspire holders with much ad -j j dit ional firmness. The sales of the week are very large for the season, footing up about 6,500 bales, ‘ j taken principally for the English market. t LIVERPOOL CLASSIFICATION. July 30, 1847. July 31, 1846.
