bands’ Sarsaparilla.—The Proprietors
submit to the public the following certificate from a
highly respectable source, of a cure made by using
their preparation of Sarsaparilla :
Norwich, N. Y., Oct. 6, 1846. —Messrs. A. B. &
D. Sands : Gentlemen—Feelings of gratitude induce
me to make a public acknowledgment of the benefit
I have derived from the use of your Sarsaparilla. I
have for several years been afflicted with scrofulous
swellings in my head, which at times would gather
and discharge at my throat, nose and ears, and at
other times, would break out in different parts of my
face and head. These continued until my throat, face
and head were almost one complete sore, and for a
long time I was so hoarse that it was with the utmost
difficulty that 1 could speak above a whisper. Du
ring this time I had several attacks of pleurisy and
other diseases. I consulted different physicians, and
tried various remedies, but received no benefit until
I commenced using your Sarsaparilla. I am now
well: the sores are all healed, and I attribute the re
sult entirely to the effects of your valuable medicine.
Yours, with respect and gratitude,
Phoebe Cahoon.
Being personally acquainted with the person above
named, I believe her statement to be correct.

Li verpool Markets.
Extracts from Letters received in this city, dated
LIVERPOOL, 3rd August, 1847.—Since the date
of our last circular the demand for Cotton has in gene
ral been only limited, the purchases of the Trade
having fallen off materially from the average of the
preceding month, but Exporters have operated to a
lair extent, and Speculators also have not been entire
ly inactive. The total sales of the month amount to
128,070 bales, which include 93,220 American, and
of these 30,260 have been taken by Speculators, and
13,580 for Export, two-thirds of both of which con
sist of American description. There have been for
warded unsold 1 450 bales, and the quantity taken
for consumption will be found to average 19,347
bales per week. Prices of middling American hav e
declined |d. to }d. per lb., but the qualities best su ted
for Export have supported their value. Sea Islands
remain without change, but other long-stapled cotton
is fd. to a id. dearer than on the 3rd ult.
The state of business in Manchester is still far from
being good, and this has constantly tended to depress
the market, which on the other hand has been sustain
ed by the actual reduction of Stock here, the certain
ty of the present crop of the United States proving no
more than it has for some time past been estimated at,
and the prospect lately held out, that the crop of
1847-8 may also be below an average of late years.
Since the arrival of the last Boston steamer on the
23th ult., these considerations have imparted greater
firmness to the market, and the business of the last
two days has been larger than on most of the prece
ding days in July. The state of money matters how
ever is not satisfactory, the rate of discount having
again advanced of late, and this circumstance will
probably check any speculative operations.
BARING, BROTHERS & Co.
LIVERPOOL, Aug. 3, 1847.—The harvest is pro
gressing under the most favorable circumstances in
the Southern counties, and has partially commenced
in this district. The reports of blight have in a great
measure died away, and generally speaking, the crops
of wheat, oats and barley, are represented as unusual
ly abundant, and of superior quality.
It is yet much too early to judge conclusively^fto
the Potato crop, but it is more promising than it was,
some weeks ago, considered to be. The less impor
tant crop of Beans has partially failed. The accounts
from the Continent speak almost universally of the
most prolific crops.
Under the influence of this and of continued heavy
foreign supplies, the Corn markets have gone down
rapidly to a further important extent, and are in a
state of panic. It has been impossible to idealize ex
cept in a retail way, for ten days or a fortnight past;
and now the quotations are 275. and 275. 6d. for the
best Western Canal Flour; Philadelphia and Balti
more, warranted sweet, 265. a |2tis. 4d.; sour 21s. a
235. ; Indian Corn, sound, 265. a 30s. per [quarter,
dow n to 255. a 245, for parcels unsound and heated.
Indian Com Meal, 14s. per hbl.
At auction to-day some parcels of Indian Corn
which had been slightly heated but now in good con
dition, sold at 255. per quarter and sour Western
Canal Flour at 21s. 6d. a 235. 6d. per bbl., with some
prime Indian Corn Meal at 14s. per bbl. There have
been some failures in the Corn Trade, and more ap
prehended, causing much distrust, and altogether the
trade is in an extraordinary degree of depression
We had a quiet Colton market for ten days and an
unusually limited business with a decline of about id.
per pound, but since the arrival of the Boston steamer
i of loth ult., there has been some increase of demand
, and more firmness, and this decline has been par.ialiy
| recovered, 3
The more favorable aspect of the market is to be
attributed to the accounts of the American growing
crop being so exceedingly unpromising in the Atlantic
States, and also precarious in the Western States from
the late season. More decided confidence in the re
sult of the harvest has contributed to the firmness of
holders, but they have however to day again shown
more disposition to sell.
The for the week ended 23d ult. amounted to
2°,500 bales, o! which 2000 were taken on specula
tion, and 2500 for export, and for the week ended
30th ult. the business was 18,130 bales, of which
2700 was on speculation and 1000 to exporters. The
transactions lor the last three days to this evening
have been about 18,500 bales, about 6000 of it being
to speculators and exporters. Fair Upland is quoted
at fair Mobile 7|, and fair Orleans 7k per lb.
The slock in this port is now estimated at 410,000
bales, against 760,000 at same period last season.
The stock of American is about 340,000, being a de
crease of 224,000 bales. The trade of the spinners
is unsatisfactory, though somewhat less disastrous
than some time ago. The diminished production of
goods and yarns has produced their value more nearly
on a par with the raw material, but still relatively be
low it, and it is only the apprehension of another short
American crop, and the hope of an improved trade,
from good harvests, that sustains the Cotton market.
The Money market, instead of becoming easier, is
decidedly more stringent with increase of pressure
and a higher rate of interest.
BROWN, SHIPLEY & CO.
LIVERPOOL, August 2, 1847 Cotton. -W e
had a dull cotton market during the early part of the
last fortnight, and prices £to |d per lb. Os late the
firmness of the weather, and decline in tiie Grain
market, have given animation to the trade, and not
withstanding a tight money market, prices have near
ly recovered this decline. The trade are the principal
operators.
The accounts of the growing crop are favorable in
the most southerly part of the cotton region, but very
much the reverse farther north, and particularly so in
the Atlantic States. The season throughout has been
backward, and the chances up to this time are con
sidered to bn much against a large crop. Fair Or
leans, 7Jd, middling 7d ; Fair Mobiles, 7|d, middling
7d; Fair Uplands, 7£d, middling 6|d.
Grain and Flour. —The weather has continued
uninterruptedly fine, and the crops are now hastening
to maturity. Reaping is pretty general in the south
ern counties, but has only partially commenced in
this neighborhood. The blight in the wheat and po
tatoes has made little progress, and the former is now
beyond all further injury from this cause. Potatoes
must still be considered a precarious crop. The arri
vals from abroad continue to be very large.
We had an extensive demand for good qualities of
flour and wheat in the early part of last fortnight,
and prices slightly advanced, Western Canal flour
being readily saleable at 35s 6d per barrel. The fine
ness of the weather, the large arrivals, and the pros
pect of considerable further importations from your
side, have since produced a great change in the state
of the market. We now quote flour 5s per barrel
lower than on the 18th ult., and wheat 9d to Is per
701bs. The arrivals of Indian corn continue large,
and the demand is limited ; prices of corn have de
clined 7s to 8s per quarter in the fortnight, and of meal
4s per barrel.
The value of rice is nominal. Carolina is quoted
20s to 23 per cwt.
Money Market. —Notwithstanding the moderate
prices to which Grain has now fallen, the Money
market continues very stringent. The rates of dis
count in this town may be quoted from 5J to 7| per
cent., according to the class and character of the bills.
The Stock and Share markets are steady, at some de
cline on rates lately current. The bullion in the Bank
of England continues to decrease, and is now only
£9,770,347.
State of 'Trade. —The general election has inter
fered with business during the past fortnight, and
during the early part of it the stringency of the money
market contributed with other causes, to produce
some depression. Os late there has been increased
confidence, and a disposition is shown to lay in stocks
now considerably reduced throughout the country.

A. DENNISTOUN & CO.
P. S. 3d August. —The sales of Cotton to-day are
i 4000 bales, of which 700 bales for export. The mar
ket is steady at our quotations.
The weather continues very fine, and, influenced
by the unfavorable accounts from Mark-lane, the
Corn market held here to-day has been extremely
depressed. Western Canal Flour brings 27s to
28s per bbl. ; best white American Wheat 9s B<l per
70 lbs.; Indian Corn 25= to 30 per quarter.
The money market grows tighter in London.
A. D. & CO.
HAVRE, July 31, 1847.— Cottons.— During the
whole of the week business, generally speaking, has
exhibited a very dull appearance, which may in some
measure be attributed to the celebration of the anni
versary holidays; but the unsatisfactory character of
the accounts from Li verpool, coupled with the unfa
vorable intelligence from several of our manufacturing
districts, are the main causes to which the prevalent
flatness is to be ascribed. Our market has therefore
remained devoid of activity since our last, report ; the
transactions have daily been on a very limited scale,
and the demand merely to supply the immediate
wants for consumption. There is however no de
pressed feeling manifested ; on the contrary, holders
seem to have confidence as to the future, and evince
no inclination to stimulate dealers by granting a con
cession in price. The advices ol the 16th inst, daily
looked for by the steamer from the United States, are
I expected to contain something conclusive as to the
J shipments likely to come forward before the close of
the season, and also to convey an idea as to the pros
pects for the new crop, which will probably be pro
ductive of some new feature incur market and little
will therefore be done until their arrival. The im
ports of cotton since the commencement of the month
amount to 9528 bales, and the outgoings to 28,500
bales; prices of American descriptions have, during
that period, undergone an improvement of f. 1 a 1 50
on those at the end of June. We just learn the ar
rival of the Caledonia; but at going to press her des
! patches had not been delivered.
I The sales from the 23d to the 31st of July were
i 4567 bales, including 1875 New Orleans at 95
a 103 ; 200 do. to arrive at 101 ; 728 Mobile at 95 a
a 102T.50; 600 do. to arrive at 101, and 1164 Upland
at 97f,50 a 103. The arrivals were 3970 bales.

HAVRE, Aug. 2—Evening. —On the 31st ult. we
received the intelligence brought by the Caledonia,
which gave a new impulse to transactions, and 3500
bales U. S. Cottons changed hands, without, however,
any advance in price.
To-day, Monday, the sales amount to 1500 bales,
at the same rates, but well supported.
Wheat and flour are declining, with the exception
i of superior descriptions. The fall in our French rnar
ket on wheat, during the past month, was f. 545 per
hectolitre—the average being 29 95, against 22 75 last
year.
NEW YORK, August 20, 2 P. M —Exchange—
The market still remains unsettled for foreign bills,
and as it is difficult to give quotations with any degrel
of correctness, we omit them for the P rese " 1 -
The sales of Cotton yesterday were -about 800 hales.
To dav the market has not fairly opened yet.
The lots of Cotton which were withdrawn a tew
days previous to the arrival of the steamer je now
rather pressed on tho market, and are sold at prices
somewhat in favor of the buyer.
The Flour market is inactive. Genesee is held at
$5.87i and Oswego at $5.75. ,
The dealers generally feel rather mde^nde D t or
the foreign market at present, believing ha ,he
ply of our own wants and the demand for the East
ward will take off ail the lots as they rtinve.

MOUNT EAGLE TRIPOLI.
A REMARKABLE mineral, pronounced by
geologists to be a great rarity in nature, and
known to them by the name of Tripoli, has lately been
discovered in this country, although but in one bed, of
very narrow limits, all owned by the “ Mount Eagle
Manufacturing Company” incorporated for the sole
purpose of its manufacture.
This article is excellent for burnishing and cleaning
all finished metallic and glass surfaces, such as gold,
silver brass, Britannia and steel ware, window glass,
dbc. 5 Nothing has ever yet been discovered equal to
the pure Tripoli, and the common language of the con
sumer is, it is the best thing I ever saw. The genuine
article is for sale bv the exclusive agent for Augusta,
