Extracts from Letters received in this city , dated LIVERPOOL, August 18, 1847. —We have little ot interest to add to the Circular sent out by the Gaudalquiver. The demand for Cotton continues to j a fair extent, with a dull quiet market, at prices rather in favor of buyers. An advance was looked for by many on the arrival ofthe last steamer, bringing un favorable accounts of the growing crop, but any im ptovement that might have arisen from this cause has been effectually counteracted by the high valiTe of money and the continued dullness of trade in Man chester . The sales of Cotton since the 13th inst. are 16,500 bales, of which speculators have taken 3000, and ex porters 1000 bales. The market closes heavily. W ifh the continuance of fine harvest weather the corn markets are much depressed. Western Canal Hour is worth 26s per bbl.; Baltimore and Philadel phia 245.; sour 20s. a 215.; American Wheat 7s. 6d. a Bs. 6d. per 70 lbs. Indian Corn 25 a 28s. per quar ter, and Indian Corn Meal 12s, a 12s. 6d per bbl. Brown, Shipley & Co. LIVERPOOL, August 17, 1847. Cotton. 1846. 1847. Import, Jan. At this decline there has been great steadiness for some days past, in spite of the ex- , traordinary dearness of money. The market has ( < been left nearly entirely to the trade and exporters, 1 i speculators doing little or nothing. The last accounts from the United States bring no more favorable report of the growing crop; on the contrary, considerable further injury said to have been caused by continued and in some parts very heavy rains. Pair Orleans, 7£d; middling 6|d.; lair Mobiles, 7jd.; middling 6gd.; fair Uplands 7jd,; middling 6|d, ] Flour, and Grain.— The weather was rather un- ‘ settle i for a few days after the sailing of the Cambria, - but not so much so as to do any real injury to the Grain while it benefitted the green crops. Os late it has been all that could be desired for securing the 1 harvest. The season throughout has been one of the best on c record, and it cannot, we think, be doubted that the t crops are good, on the whole. 1 We had a reaction in our Corn market to the ex- i tent of 2s. to 3s. per barrel on flour soon after the 1 sailing of the Cambria, but this advance could not be ( maintained in the face of the immense arrivals at this ( port. Notwithstanding a great demand from the country for flour ,we now quote it Is. to Is. 6d. per 1 barrel lower than on the 3d inst, and Wheat is Is. to Is. 3d. per 70 lbs. Indian Corn and Corn Meal close at about the quotations of the 3d inst. Money Market. —The Bank of England raised its minimum rate of discount on the sth instant to 54 per cent., and the value of money has risen through out the country to a point at which perhaps it has never before been known. In this town discounts have hardly been attainable under 64 per cent., and have ranged from that to 8 per cent. The Foreign Exchanges rose with the stringency of the money market, but the whole of the advance ob tained has not been supported. ’Till we see the Ex changes become stead) we cannot expect much ease in the money market. ' State of Trade. —The state of trade at Manches- t ter continues extremely unsatisfactory. Prices of ' Goods and Y rns, instead of advancing are declin- 6 ing, and spinners are compelled to limit their produc- I tion still further. The present dearness of money c puts nearly an entire stop to shipments to distant mar kets. * A. DENNISTOUN & CO. P• S.—lßth August—There is a fair demand to day for Colton. The sales are 4500 bales, without change in price'. * The Corn market is firmer. Western Canal Flour brings 265. 6d. to 275.; sound parcels are -carce. In ferior Indian Corn is inquired for at about 245. for 1 feeding purposes. Good qualities and Corn meal are 1 neglected. 1 Trade at Manchester was yesterday verv dull. 1 A. D. & CO. ; NEW YORK, Sept. 3, 2P.M. By the mail we 1 have received our usual commercial advices from Liverpool, and they do rot ditl'er materially from the c telegraphic communication yesterday. It will be seen that the quotations given in the two Liveiqjool circulars differ somewhat. For instance, J that of Brown, Slrpley & Co. quotes Canal Flour at 1 265. and Indian meal I2s. a 12s. 6d., while that of Dennistoun & Co. quotes the former at 265. a 275,, 1 and the latter as neglected at 14s. Exchange, —The market for foreign bills is so un- ' settled to-day that it is impossible to give the quota tions with any reasonable degree of accuracy. We have heard of one sale of £luoo Virginia bank bills at 1034. , 1 The Cotton market yesterday was quiet. To-day * thus far we hi ve learned of only 300 bales being sold. Prices are 4 of a cent, per lb» lower. The Flour market is dull and heavy. Genesee is held at 55,68| a $5,75, but we hear of no sales. We notice sales of 10,000 bushels mixed Corn at 66 cents. j MOBILE, Sept. I. Cotton. —The transactions of the past week show an advance of | a £c. in all j grades of cotton. In the early part of the week the g market was very quiet, and duringthe first three days ( the aggregate sales were not over 500 bales, at the figures given in our last weekly review. On Friday the Cambria’s advices to the 4th ult., came to hand, since which time there has been an active demand, ] and, for the season, large transactions at the advance j named above. The sales on Saturday were 2000 bales, Monday 1200 and yesterday 300 —being 3500 j for the three days and 4000 bales for the week. The market closes very firm at the advanced quotations given below. A large portion of the stock on hand has been withdrawn from the market by planters’orders, , on account o I the unfavorable prospects of the growing crop, and the stock on sale is, consequently, extremely light. Middlings 11 a— Fair Ilf al2 Ordinary 104 a— Middling fair ••• 114 a— | We have taken an accurate account of the stock of cotton in the warehouses, &c., and examined careful ly the manifests in the customhouse, and the result is contained in the following statement: Mobile cotton statement for 1846-7. The precise figures are 99,153 bales. The large stock on hand will attract attention. !l is unprece dented, being more than three times as large as that at the close of last year, and that was larger than ever before known. The cause of this large stock re maining on hand is doubtless attributable, principally, to the impression, now universally prevalent, that we are to have another short crop, which has induced planters to order their crops to be withdrawn from the market, in full confidence of improved prices when the result shall have been made manifest. Os the 24,- 172 bales now on hand it is estimated that not more than 1500 or 2000 are on sale at present prices. We hear of several large crops that are limited at 12c. for middlings, and ordered to be held until they command that price. Whether the anticipations of these plan ters will be realized is not our province to say, or even express an opinion. We are only stating facts as they exis L There is one conclusion, however, of a very gratifying character to be drawn from this state of things, and that is, that the planting interest is becom ing easy and independent in monetary affairs. There is no doubt that the planters are fast relieving them selves of the load of debt which has weighed them down for years past and are now on the high road to prosperity. AV e tender them our congratulations, and heartily wish them all success. Freights. —The following transactions have taken place since our last in foreign : A ship and a bark have been taken up for Liverpool at §d; a bark has been taken up fur Havre at Ijc., being a decline of |c. since our last quotations. In coastwise we have to report two brigs and a schooner taken for New York at 4c., and a brig for Philadelphia at 4c. A brig has aleo been taken for Tortugas with lumber. The ton nage in port, unengaged, consists of only one bark. Exchange Rates remain as last week, and amo - derate business only has been done. The supply is good with a light demand. _ NE^ n ORLEANS .
