minds, and all other considerations were lost fsisht of in the sincere desire of serving their beloved country, at all hazards. If. through carelessness, or imagined securi ty, the British allowed themselves to be thrown, even for a moment, off their guard, some brave fellow, fighting “on his own hook.” was almost certain to discover the weak point and collecting his neighbors, they were, either by means of stratagem, or their impetuous and unexpected attacks, invariably successful in their undertakings. Nat had arranged his plans admirably, and was as has been shown, successful. Joe Reckhow followed Nat and his party down to the boats m which they had crossed t ie -ound, and immediately assisted in their de baikation. Nat took good care of his prison ers. watching them very strictly, but acted to wards them far more humanely than they would have done had lie been a prisoner in their hands. They were eventually exchanged for officers ol equal rank, and Nat continued to fight upon the side of liberty until the close of the war. — A ew York Times. During the first five or six days of the month there was considerable excitement in the cotton market with large sales for the period of the year, and at very full prices. The advance was nearly Ic. per pound. The excitement was caused by the daily receipt of the most unfavorable accounts from all parts of the coun try in reference to the condition of the growing crop. V\ e ha\e now to remark that the excitement lias en tirely subsided, aud that during the present week the demand has materially fallen off —the sales not ex ceeding 1500 bales. This condition of the market is attributable to the very high point to which holders have raised their figures, and to the unfavorable tenor of the advices by the steamers Gandalquiver and Cal edonia. We give onr quotations in accordance with the sales made, but consider them merely nominal—not over 2 to 300 bales having changed hands since Tues day last: LIVERPOOL CLASSIFICATION. ~ . It is now pasta question that the crop of the State generally has suf fered severely by the weather and the boll worm, whilst in the lower counties the army worm has swept many of the plantations. No condition of the weather I f° r l be remainder of the season can give us an ave- I i ago ci op, and the probabilities at the present time | seem to be that the receipts at this port will not great ly exceed those of the year just closed. It is too earl v for estimates; our best attention, however, will be engaged to obtain the most accurate information , which we shall be prompt to lay before our readers! [ . ’ eights. Me have heard of no transactions in j j foreign this week—the lust engagement to Liverpool i was at £d. Coastwise are also very dull, the only j vessel taken full was a bark for Boston at he. To N. ork only about 300 bales have been shipped at 82 per hale. The disengaged tonnage in port is fast in creasing. Exchange —The market has been very quiet all the week. The transactions in foreign bills have been ver\ light, though the unfavorable tenor of the foreign advices and the upward tendency in rates in other cities, has caused a corresponding advance here. There is some little inquiry for checks and short sight bills on N. I ork, which is principally furnished *bv the bank of Mobile at former rates. 51)ippin g 3utelli gene c.
