J. Adams: In the year 1812, from exposure while in
the army, my hip, thigh and leg, down to rny toes,
became swollen a third larger than their natural size,
and after a time ulcerated and broke, and remained a
running ulcer for five or six years, and at intervals
ever since that period, until I concluded my only hope
for life was in amputation, but I now have the plea
sure of stating that after my leg had been so swollen
for thirty odd years, and a large portion of the time

Commercial.
CHARLESTON, October 27, Cotton. —The up
land cotton market has been very unsettled since our
last publication. The transactions from day to day
have ber n in favor of purchasers, until fair and fully
fair could yesterday be bought at 8| a 9 cents. The
transact! ms of Saturday and Monday reached 1200
bales a', prices ruling from 3 to 9jc, a very large per
tion being at 9c. Yesterday 1200 bales were sold at
extremes from 7£ to 9c, only 120 bags bringing the
latter price.
Rice . —We have no change to notice in the Rice
market since the date of our last. Some 700 tierces
have been sold at prices ranging from 83£ to $3 15-
16ths per hundred ; and 150 tierces at a fraction un
der 84 per hundred.
Auction Sales. —There were sold at auction yester
day, by M. C. Mordecai, 170 hhds. Porto Rico Sugar
at prices ranging from 7£ to 7£c., principally at 7|c.;
170 do. good quality Muscovado do. from 6£to6yC.,
chiefly at 65C.; 80 hhds., 25 tierces and 30 bbls. Mus
covado Molasses from 23£ to 24fc.; 40 casks Rio Cof
fee from 7£ to 8| ; and 2828 bags do. from 7| to 7|c.
Salt. —There have been received within a few
days, in addition to the 300 sacks reported in our last,
5800 sacks. The former were sold at prices ranging
from 140 to 130 per sack. Prices, however, are on
the decline, and the next transactions will in all pro
bability be at lower rates.
MOBILE, Oct. 23.— Cotton. —Arrived since this
day week 2368 bales, exported in the same time 1424,
as follows : 1392 to Boston and 32 to New Orleans,
leavingthe stock on hand and on shipboard not cleared
last evening, 20,649 bales against 7.918 last season
and 16,442 the year previous.
Our last report left the market very unsettled, with
light sales, consequent upon the European news of
the 19th ult. —middling cottons were quoted at 9*c.
For the week now under review the transactions have
been somewhat extended, but the business is still light,
iu view of the stock on hand. Some 1900 bales have
found purchasers at a further reduction of fully jc.
on the current rates at the close of last week. The
purchases have been nearly equally divided between
English and Continental buyers—a few small lots
only having been taken for the northern ports. The
market has assumed a steadier and more regular tone,
and although some holders still refused the present
prices, generally they are more disposed to meet buy
ers. We are again unable to give our full scale of
quotations, which, as before remarked, are fully £c.
under the prevailing rates of last week. The contin
ued scarcity of shipping and the difficulty of negotiat
ing exchanges, tend in no small degree to retard ope
rations.

Our accounts from the interior of this State of the
incoming cotton crop are still favorable. The weather
is all that could be wished for maturingand picking—
being almost uniformly warm and dry. There was
a s’ight frost in some of the upper counties last week,
but not sufficient to do any injury to the plant, and
should the same kind of weather continue for a few
weeks longer, we shall expect to receive in Mobile
425,000 bales. The receipts now coming in show a
decided improvement in the quality—inspiring the
best hopes that our crop will prove of as good an aver
age as any heretofore received.
Freights. —ln foreign, the only engagement since
our last has been a bark for Liverpool at fd. Coast
wise—lor New York cotton has been taken by a ves
sel on the berth at $1.50 We hoar of none
shipping to other ports. We are much in want of
vessels suitable for coastwise ports.
Exchange. —The exchange market has been very
dull and heavy during the whole of the past week,
with a further reduction in rates on all points. In
foreign there is so little doing, that our figures are al
most entirely nominal. The supply of domestic is
ample for the present demand.

decidedly easier, and Good Middling not being worth
