making a total of two millions one hundred thous and biiles. The failure of the mails from the West this morn ing deprived us ot any later dates than we publish in another column, extracted from the Charleston paper s of the 4th inst. Then the deficiency in the re ceipts at all the ports amounted to 35,777 bales les s this year than the last, and the exports to Great Britain 43,099 over last year, and the exports to prance 25,111 over, and to the Continent of Europe 10,348 bales over. Om market this Meek has been quiet, owing to the 'small quantity offering, the sales only reaching 931 bales at the following rates ; 22 at 6 ; 17 at 6* ; 40 at 6f ;Bat 6* ; sat 6 9-16 ; 65 at 6| ; 174 at 6f ; 32at 613-16; 179 at 33 at 7 116 ; and 15 bales at 7* cents. There is a (rood demand and all that is offered is freely taken, but the small quantity on the market makes it almost a holiday with our trade, which at this season of the year is generally an active one. Our quotations are (3 a7* cts as the extremes of the market, principal sales, as will be seen by the list above, 6£ a 7 cents, and the latter price wo quote as the rate for Pair Cotton. FLOLR. There has been a fair demand for Flour througiiout the week, principally for city consumption, and prices are firm at tlie current rates mentioned in our last report. The sales marie are generally at from 5} to $6 per bbl. for good qualities, a higher price be ing demanded for an extra article. CORN.—Ear corn has improved and is now worth o 0 cts. per bushel, an advance chiefly attributable to the very light receipts. Sack corn is in much request for shipment. \\ e hear of no sales to establish prices, and therefore still quote 55 cts. There have been fre quent arrivals per Railroad during the week. We are still of opinion that the foreign demand for breadstuffs, will sustain the present value of corn, which might otherwise, owing to the large crop made, be much re duced. OATS, PEAS AND MEAL, —The market is scan- 1 tily supplied with Oats, for which there is considera ble inquiry. We hear of several sales having been made at 40 cts. per bushel. Peas arc readily dis posed of at 50 cts. The same may be remarked of Meal. GROCERIES.—A moderate business has been j done in the articles comprised under this head, al though chiefly in a retail way. We hear of no whole sale transactions, except the sale of 40 bags Rio Cof fee at 7§ cts. cash, about 100 bags in small lots at 8* cts., and 10 hhds. Molasses on the wharf at 26 cents. The stocks of heavy goods have received still farther accessions, and are now adequate to any demand. BAGGING AND ROPE.—We have no alteration to report in Bagging. Kentucky sells freely at 17* a 18 cts.—Gunny 21 a 22. There continues to be a very fair demand for both descriptions. The receipts of Bale Rope have not kept pace with the demand, and the article is still scarce and high. We do not niter our figures, as 10 cts. is still the price at retail. LIQUORS —N. O. Whiskey is on the declino | sales have been made at 30 cts —the stock is light, but large shipments are on the way. No movement in other liquors. BACON AND LARD —As the season has so far advanced there is scarcely any demand for either of these articles of the old slock, except for Hams, which are scarce, arid readily command I2*c. for a choice article, at which price a small lot was sold to-day—a few bbls. of old Lard was sold at 10 cts. HOGS—Heavy arrivals has rather depressed the price. Sales are daily made at 4 and 4* cts. gross and 5 and s*c. net. A drove of near 500 head were received by our Railroad on Sunday'. FEATHERS—Recent arrivals have increased our stock—2B cents is generally asked for them. ALT.—The cold weather has increased the de mand for both sack and bulk Salt, the price of sack Salt is firm at 1.50 per Sack, at which price consider able sales have made from the wharf. Retail price 51.62* per Sack, and Bulk Salt at 40 a45 cents. EXCHANGE. —Checks on New York are scarce, and 1 per cent is readily obtained, but few of our Banks are checking even at that rate. FREIGHTS. —The River remains in good boating order, several of our large class of boats arrived at the wharf since our last. Up freights continue heavy, but down freights are uncommonly dull; freight to Savannah 75 cents per bale for Cotton, and to Charles ton by Railroad sl. NEW YORK, December 4, 2 P. M.— Cotton.-- The sales of Cotton for the week ending last evening j were 5400 bales, including 3000 of Upland and j Florida, and 2400 of Mobile and New Orleans. The ! arrivals for the same period were 5350 bales Prices } have recovered soinewffiat from their depression, and we now advance our prices *a | cent, per lb. We quote as follows: UpVd cf* Florida. Mobile tf* N. O Inferior none. none. Ordinary' to good ordinary.. • 6| a 6| 6| a 7 Middling to good middling... 7 a 7J 7f a 7J Middling fair to fair 7| a 8* 8 a Fully fair to good fair 8* a 8j 8| a 9 Pine none. none. The market this morning is quiet. Flour. —The flour market is firm but quiet for Western Canal. The sales are 600 barrels strictly Genesee at $6.37* ; 500 barrels ground in this State, from mixed lots of at $6.25 a $6.31* > 400 barrels of Oswego and Western at 6.18 f a $6.25, the former price for Oswego. Southern flour is in moderate demand at former prices. Corn meal is firm and scarce. Small sales of Brandywine at $3.50 a $3.62*. At the board to-day Treasury notes sold at par, being the same rate as yesterday. Exchange. There is nothing doing in foreign bills. There is no supply of sterling in the market, nor do we as yet hear of any inquiry. We continue our previous quotations. On London at 109 f a 110* ; on Paris 5f.23| a 5f.22*. CHARLESTON, Dec. 7. — Cotton. —With a mo derate demand yesterday for Uplands the market continued without change in prices. The sales a inounted to 456 bales —of which 436 bales at /* for lair, and 20 bales at 7* for middling fair quality. Pice. —An active demand from the opening to the close of the market advanced the rates of Saturday fully*. The sales of the day amounted to rising of; 750 bales, at prices varying from s2* a $3| —princi- pally S3J a s3*. Corn.— About 1000 bushels by Railroad sold in bulk at 65 cents. Four. —Country superfine brands are rather dull at ss| a $6. NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 1, P. M. —lnconsequence of the severe rain storm, only a moderate amount of j business was transacted to-day. Ihe sales ot Cotton i reached 2,000 bales, at yesterday’s prices. Su*ar and Molasses.— Owing to the bad weather, there was but a small business done in these articles to-dav. In Sugar, about 200 hhds. were sold at for mer prices. In Molasses, some 300 hhds. were sold at , 19*c. per gallon. Flout The only sale of Flour to-day that we could learn of is 200 bbls. Illinois at $5.12* per bbl. There was, however, some little demand, and a few buyers wore offerin< T to purchase at $5 a $5.10, but holders were firm at $5.25 per bbl. for Ohio and Illinois brands —so that the transactions of the day were very limit ed. * Whiskey.— Small sales to-day at 18 cts. per gallon. s Exchanges. —Foreign Exchange is dull, and rates nominal. Sterling, 104 a 106 ; Francs, 5f.40 a 5f.00- Bills on New York at 60 days 2* a 3 per cent, disc.; Checks, pur a * per cent. dis. Freights. —No engagements were made to-day. Shipping Intelligence. ORPRICE0 R PRICE &CO ———e THE PHILOMATHEAN COLL EG-1 ATE INSTITUTE. qn HIS INSTITUTION, which is under the X exclusive government and superintendence of the Rev. J no . C. W. Reid, was founded in 1839. and is located at Woodstock—a new and healthy village in Oglethorpe county, near the county lines offcrreene and Taliaferro, and about eight miles from V oodville, on the Athens branch ol the Georgia Rail Road. 5 The well-earned reputation of Mr. Reid, as an able and efficient instructor of youth, after an experi ence of near twenty years, it is believed is so exten sively and favorably know n as to render entirely use less any recommendation of his qualifications or merits to the intelligent public of this State. But the Trus tees have thought that they might subserve the public interest and promote the cause of education by ma king more generally known the superior advantages of this school— particularly to young men who are desirous of qualifying themselves for teaching in the common Schools and Academies of this State. Ibis Institution is designed to afford the means not only of pursuing such studies as are usually taught in the best Academies and Boarding Schools, but of obtaining a thorough classical education. It is true, that in several of the practical, as well as the abstract sciences, the course of study is not so extensive as that which is pursued in most of the Colleges and Uni versities, but the course here taught is quite sufficient to fit a young man to enter any of the business pur suits of life, and even the learned professions. In its organization, the School consists of two De partments —the Primary and the Classical. The Primary Department is intended for small ■cholars, and all whose studies are limited to Spell- Beading, Writing, Arithmetic, Geography, Eng lish. Grammar, &.c. (fee., including Composition and Declamation, &c. The Classical Department is intended for those more advanced, particularly for young men, and is divided into three classes : Ist. The studies of the First Class are Latin Grammar, Histone Sacra?, Ciesar. Virgil, Cicero’s Orations, Greek Grammar, Greek Reader, Greece Minora, Greek Testament, with Geography, Arith metic and Algebra. 2d. The studies of the Second Class are Horace, Sallust, Livy, Xenophon, Greece Majora, Algebra concluded, Geometry and Day’s Mathematics. 3d. The studies of the Third Class are Cicero de Oralore, Homer, Natural Philosophy, Moral Philoso phy, Logic, Rhetoric, Astronomy and Chemistry. One year is allowed for the studies of each class, and three years for a regular course through this de partment. Connected with the School is a Library comprising many valuable books, to which the students have ac cess—and a valuable Chemical , Philosophical and Geometrical Apparatus will be in readiness by the beginning of the next term. The scholastic year consists of two terms, including two weeks vacation—the first of seven months, be ginning in January and ending with July. The se cond of three months, beginning in August and ending in November. The annual examination closes 011 the last Friday in July. The first term commences on the First Monday in January. The rates of Tuition in the Primary Department arc from sl4 to S2O per annum. The rates in the Classical Department are S3O per annum, with $2 for the use of Apparatus. Good Board can be obtained in the village for from $8 to $lO per month. The Trustees feel well assured that many other considerations might be presented to commend this school to the attention of the public, but they forbear to say more. SAMUEL GLENN, ] - R. C.
