AUGUSTA MARKET. Tuesday, December 14, P. M. REMARKS. —Since our last weekly report we have but little change to notice in matters and things generally, the small sales of Cotton has so diminished the circulation of our Banks that money has become scarcer than we ever knew it at this season of the year, an i the continued drain fir specie, (exchange on the Nor.h having become scarce,) our Banks dis count but little local piper, and our Merchants have hard limes, as collections and cash sales are to a very limited extent. CO I TON. —Since our last weekly report we have received accounts from Liverpool to the 19th ult., and although the private correspondence is not at hand (from the failure of the mail) we perceive from the Telegraphic reports, which are very full, that after the depaiture 01 the steamer of the 4th the Liverpool mar ket advanced J a Jd. per lb., but that after the arrival of the steamer with dates from this country to the Ist of Nov., giving very exaggerated accounts of the pros pect of the growing crop (no killing frost at that time) their market gave way and prices lost what they had gained. From all this we augur more favorably, and we believe that they, as well as many in this country, will be disappointed in the extent of the crop; but there is another feature in the accounts which will, we fear, counterbalance this and atfect prices during the season; we allude to the demand for, and advance in all kinds of Bread-stuffs. Ihe leceipts in the Atlantic Ports continue very light and the business doing is to a very limited extent lor the season of the year. This week last year the re ceipts at Charleston were 14,473 bales; and the sales 9,649 bales ; this year the receipts are 3,960 bales, and the sales I,SOO bales; this week last year in Savan nah the receipts were 9,939 bales, the sales 6798 bales; this year the receipts 3,024 bales, the sales 2,327 bales. In our market, the past week opened quietly, and on I hursday and Friday the market flagged, but on Saturday a more speculative feeling existed and sales were made to a considerable extent. Yesterday and to-day the market has been quite animated and an advance of J a *c. has been paid on the prices in the early part ot the week. The sales from Warehouses amounted to 1800 bales, at the following rates : 5 bales at6i; 19 at 6$ ; 103 at 6A ; 168 at 6|; 21 at 6 11-16; 112 at 6| ; 30 at 6 13-16; 361 at 6| ; 815 at 7; 18 at i 1-16; 122 at 7| ; and 24 bales at 7\ cents. We give as quotations of our market : Ordinary ; Middling to Good Middling a6f ; Middling ; Pair to Fair 7a7| ; Choice cents. In addition to ' the sales made above there has been considerable sales from waggons which it is imjwssible for us to re port. Up to the dales below, the receipts at all the ports of the United States are as follows : Ports. 1847. 1846. New Orleans, Dec. 7 270,341 209,019 Mobile, Dec. 7 54,814 35,757; Charleston, Dec. 10 41,633 126,300 1 Savannah, Dec. 9 22,732 63,795 Florida, Nov. 25 5,930 4,490 1 Texas, Nov. 13 4,286 1,472 Virginia, Dec. 1 1,100 3,480 1 North Carolina, Nov. 27 28 531 I Total- 400,919 444,844 ; Making a deficiency in the receipts up to the above I dates of 43,965 bales. FLOUR.—The receipts of this article since our last I have been quite large, and there is a plentiful supply ! in market. Holders are very firm at the current rates ' of last week, and prices are fully maintained. We i renew our quotations offrom 5$ to 86 per bbl., between which extremes most sales are made. We are grat ified to notice the improvement our millers have at tained in the order and outward finish of their bbls. — this we particularly remarked in a small lot received last week from the “ Cedar Bluff Mills, Ala., ” which equals Canal in its external appearance. CORN.—Unfavorable accounts from the seaboard ! caused a temporary dullness in our corn market— j former prices were barely sustained, and in Ear Cora j a decline was submitted to. But the recent advices by the Britannia announcing an increased demand, and great activity in Indian Corn has produced a re bound in the article. Holders claim an advance of 2 or 3 cts. per bushel in sack corn, and several large lots have been sold to shippers at 57 cts. ; Ear Corn we quote 50 cts., in sack 57 to 58. OATS, PEAS AND MEAL. —Oats are more abun dant with less demand, sales have been made at 37£ and 40 cts.; Peas are lower, we quote 45 to 50 cts. Meal remains as last noticed. GROCERIES. —There has been an increased de mand for Groceries since our last review as usual upon the approach of the holiday season. The sales made were chiefly in filling country orders, although some few merchants have made their purchases among us. W e have no alteration to report in any of the leading articles. BAGGING AND ROPE.—The Bagging market has been very quiet during the week with a some what slackened demand—pricesjare unchanged. The inquiry for Bale Rope continues, and it has been sold freely from stores at 10 cts. LIQUORS. —We have noticed more activity ir. Liquors this week, and a better business has been done in all descriptions. The sales of N. (). Whiskey have been large —prices ranging from 30 to 32 cts, ; the stock is on the increase. BACON AND LARD. —We have but little to re mark in relation to either of these articles. There have been no arrivals, and no sales of Bacon, that we hear of, and prices are nominal. Lard may be quoted at 10 cts. FEATHERS —The stock of Feathers has been much increased by large arrivals. We quote 28 to 30 cents, most sales being at the latter rate. SALT—The heavy demand f r Salt noticed in our last report has been steadily kept up during the week just ended, and prices are very firm. No large sales of Sack Salt have been re* orted to us, several lats have been sold on the wharf at 51.55, and from at 81.62. Bulk retails at 40 to 45 cents. EXCHANGE —Checks on New-York and other Northern cities can be had in small sums at 1c pretn. FREIGHTS—Remain as last reported. The river is in fine older and navigable for our largest boats. The down freights continue quite light. Liverpool Market. LIVERPOOL, Nov. 18.—Since the departure of the last steamer the pressure in the Money Market has slightly abated, and there were symptoms of a more favorable change until in the last few days fur ther failures, including a large Brokerage House in London, have caused renewed depression and dis trust. The position of the Bank of England is some what improved, but they adhere to their own mini mum rate of 8 per cent, for discounts, while their branches do nothing under 9 per cent, per annum. In the Cotton market we had for a week rather more firmness and an improvement of Jd a .rom the lowest point, but since the arrival of the Boston steamer of 16th ultimo, with increased estimates ol the coming crop, the market has again become ex tremely languid and heavy, and the improvement is quite lost. We repeat our last quotations, say 5Jd for Upland and Mobile, and 54d for fair Orleans; mid. 4|da4fd, and ord. 3f a per lb. The sales for the week ended 12th inst. amounted to 26,400 bales. The Corn markets are firm and rather higher —the best Western Canal Flour being quoted at 29 a 30s, and Philadelphia and Baltimore 28 a 28s 6d.; sour 22 a 245. Indian Corn has advanced, and is now quoted 33 a 39s per quarter ; best white at 40s- the chief business being at 35s a 37s 6d fbr fair sound parcels. Indian Corn Meal 15s 6d a 16s 6d per barrel. CHARLESTON, Dec. 14.— Cotton. —There was no northern mail yesterday, and consequently no pri vate or more particular advices by the Britannia were received. The Upland market continued quiet as on Saturday, about 200 bales sold at prices ranging from ? 4 to one or two holders claiming an advance of | cent. Rice.— -Salos abou 500 bbls. at extremes from 83 1 to 83J. The market said to have partaken of a bet ter leeling than on Saturday, without an advance in J prices. : No transactions oi Corn. Os Flour, 50 sacks Geor gia, 100 lbs. each, sold at 83, cash. bljipping Intelligence. j CHARLESTON, Dec. 14.-- Cleared. —Schr. Wil low, Roney, Barbados, (W. I.) BARGAINS IN DRY GOODS. WILLIAM H.
